Après dîner, il partagea sa soirée entre deux théâtres, le Théâtre-Lyrique et l’Opéra, où plusieurs d’entre nous lui avaient serré la main. Rentré chez lui, il s’endormit pour ne plus se réveiller, à côté de cette page de musique humide encore qui avait reçu sa dernière pensée restée inachevée. Le père d’Adolphe Adam, Louis Adam, né à Miettersholtz, en Alsace, en 1759, et qui fut pendant quarante-quatre ans professeur de piano au Conservatoire de Paris, par un contraste bien triste aujourd’hui, prolongea son existence jusqu’à près de quatre-vingt-dix ans. Vernoy, 1721. Small quarto (ca. 210 x 160 mm.) Full dark brown mottled calf with raised bands on spine. 1f. (recto title, verso blank), 301 pp. Notated in a single hand in brown ink in square notation on a 4-line staff. With 2 leaves of additional chants added in a later hand following the final entry. Note in a modern hand laid down to front free endpaper. Binding somewhat worn, rubbed, bumped, and scuffed; spine cracked, with lower portion lacking; tears with loss to blank front free endpaper; alphabetical annotations to blank rear free endpapers. Browned; corners creased; minor showthough; occasional small stains and tears; minor worming to blank inner margins. Contains vesperal chants for one year of Sundays and feast days beginning with the first Sunday of Advent. Small oval handstamp to penultimate free rear endpaper. François de Sales (1567-1622), Bishop of Geneva, founded, together with Jean-Françoise de Chantal, L'Ordre de la Visitation Sainte Marie in 1605, an order of nuns that spread throughout France. It would seem possible that the present manuscript was made for a religious community in or around Vernoy, southeast of Paris. In this quest we present traditional ballets based on classic stories revered for centuries, such as Coppelia and Cinderella; and contemporary ballets by artists who are living, working, and creating everyday, such as our jazz program Indigo In Motion and the premiers we have done to the music of Sting, Bruce Springsteen, and Paul Simon. In this way we propel our art into the future, creating new classics that subsequent generations will call traditional. It is necessary to see and experience both, past and present. His scores have been cited for their tunefulness, appropriateness for their narrative, and for their danceability. However, Delibes remains an obscure figure in music history, outside the musical canon of the nineteenth century. Likewise, his ballet music, whose harmonic resources are conventional and whose forms are variants of basic structures, has not received much scholarly and theoretical attention. This thesis addresses Delibes’s music by examining his ballet score for Coppélia, its support of narrative and also its support of dance. Chapter 1 begins with a historical view of ballet and ballet music up to the time of Delibes. Following a biographical sketch of the composer, a review of aspects of the score for Giselle by his mentor, Adolphe Adam (1803-1856) establishes a background upon which Delibes’s ballets can be considered.

MORE THAN ITS SOUND: THE POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL REASONS BEHIND THE SAXOPHONE'S EXCLUSION FROM THE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Kyle Beaudoin An Honors Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment for Honors in The Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance The School of Arts and Sciences Rhode Island College 2017 i ABSTRACT The purpose of this project is to uncover the reasons why the saxophone was not integrated into the orchestra. Through an examination of political, economic, and cultural accounts of Paris during the nineteenth century, this paper attempts to examine the effects on the saxophone’s reception. During the nineteenth century, French composers had a vehement fascination with timbre and the manipulation of its effects as a new aesthetic dimension in music; the perfect environment for an entirely new timbre to be added to ensembles, let alone introduced.
