Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of pastellists before 1800 Online edition VANDERBANK, John London 9.IX.1694–23.XII.1739 Johann van der Banck, known as John Vanderbank, was the son of a tapestry weaver of Dutch origins. From 1711 he was a pupil at Kneller’s academy, but in 1720 he joined Louis Chéron (q.v.) in establishing the first St Martin’s Lane academy; there were 33 subscribers, including established artists such as Louis Laguerre, William Kent and Giuseppe Grisoni; younger artists included Joseph Highmore, Bartholomew Dandridge, George Knapton and William Hogarth, with Arthur Pond one of the youngest and least prepared. Leading an extravagant lifestyle, Vanderbank was forced to quit England in 1724 to avoid his creditors, but returned by 1727 and resumed his career as a history painter, portraitist and illustrator. On 23.VI.1737 he took on John Robinson as an apprentice for five years for a premium of £157 10s. He normally worked in oil but produced many drawings; however virtually no pastels survive. His painting technique has been described as “lively”, in the sense of a Hogarthian lack of finish; the portraits are brightly, sometimes crudely lit. Bibliography Bénézit, s.v. The Edition Open Access (EOA) platform was founded to bring together publi- cation initiatives seeking to disseminate the results of scholarly work in a format that combines traditional publications with the digital medium. It currently hosts the open-access publications of the “Max Planck Research Library for the History and Development of Knowledge” (MPRL) and “Edition Open Sources” (EOS). EOA is open to host other open access initiatives similar in conception and spirit, in accordance with the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the sciences and humanities, which was launched by the Max Planck Society in 2003. By combining the advantages of traditional publications and the digital medium, the platform offers a new way of publishing research and of studying historical topics or current issues in relation to primary materials that are otherwise not easily available. We’ve been featured on radio and in the newspapers. And the public continues to flock through the doors of our headquarters when we have open house days. Visitors enjoying an Open House Tour at the GAC’s premises We continue to make our resources stretch as far as they can. The Director’s report highlights some of the exciting and important works which we have been able to acquire over the last year. This continues the GAC’s track record of making acquisitions by British artists of the highest calibre, fulfilling its role in promoting British art by displaying it in Government buildings in the UK and abroad. The Collection plays a vital part in Britain’s representation abroad: both as a reminder of our historical past and an illustration of our contemporary preoccupations. Our activities are an integral part of the UK’s diplomatic mission. We are pleased that we are increasingly playing a strategic role when new embassies are being planned. -

Pre-print of Hall, E. in Aristophanes in Performance (Legenda 2005) The English-Speaking Aristophanes and the Languages of Class Snobbery 1650-1914 Edith Hall Introduction In previous chapters it has been seen that as early as the 1650s an Irishman could use Aristophanes to criticise English imperialism, while by the early 19th century the possibility was being explored in France of staging a topical adaptation of Aristophanes. In 1817, moreover, Eugene Scribe could base his vaudeville show Les Comices d’Athènes on Ecclesiazusae. Aristophanes became an important figure for German Romantics, including Hegel, after Friedrich von Schlegel had in 1794 published his fine essay on the aesthetic value of Greek comedy. There von Schlegel proposed that the Romantic ideals of Freedom and Joy (Freiheit, Freude) are integral to all art; since von Schlegel regarded comedy as containing them to the highest degree, for him it was the most democratic of all art forms. Aristophanic comedy made a fundamental contribution to his theory of a popular genre with emancipatory potential. One result of the philosophical interest in Aristophanes was that in the early decades of the 18th century, until the 1848 revolution, the German theatre itself felt the impact of the ancient comic writer: topical Lustspiele displayed interest in his plays, which provided a model for German poets longing for a political comedy, for example the remarkable satirical trilogy Napoleon by Friedrich Rückert (1815-18). This international context illuminates the experiences undergone by Aristophanic comedy in England, and what became known as Britain consequent upon the 1707 Act of Union. -

This thesis has focus on portraits of sculptors at the turn of 1900, which have indications of profession. 60 artworks created between 1872 and 1927 are analyzed. The goal of the thesis is to identify new facets that modernism introduced to the portraits of sculptors. The thesis covers the evolution of artistic convention in the depiction of sculptor. The comparison of portraits at the turn of 1900 with portraits of sculptors from previous epochs is included. One aspect that has received fairly little attention is the role Newtonian “analogies” played in the formulation of new conceptual schemes in physiology, medicine, and life science as a whole. So-called ‘medical Newtonians’ like Pitcairne and Keill have been studied; but they were engaged in a more literal project of directly transposing, or seeking to transpose, Newtonian laws into quantitative models of the body. -

Ah, it’s a beautiful history; there’s a deal of morals with it, and there’s a large volume wrote about it. (Mayhew, 1967 [1861–62] 3: 46) n The New Yorker magazine of 2 August 1993, a cartoon depicts two grotesque, hook-nosed figures, male and female, fighting with cudgels Iwhile sitting at a table at an elegant restaurant, while a waiter stands by asking, ‘Are you folks ready to order?’ The cartoon prompts me to ask: why should Punch and Judy still be recognizable icons of domestic violence and social trangression at the end of the twentieth century, even to readers who may have never seen an actual ‘Punch and Judy’ puppet show? Versions of this question have, of course, been asked before. In answering them, however, scholars typically claim a primeval or archetypal status for Punch, pointing to his alleged cultural descent from a whole constellation of ancient sources including, for example, ‘the religious plays of medieval England’, ‘the impro- vised farces of the Italian comedians’, and ‘the folk festivals of pagan Greece’ (Speaight, 1970: 230). I will take the opposite position, attempting to locate ‘Punch and Judy’ in the actual processes of social life and cultural transmis- sion in a particular period, and in the dynamic interaction of cultural practices and their discursive reinterpretation. Such an approach may do more justice to the cultural meaning of figures who still apparently embody, as they do in the cartoon, anxieties about status, class, gender, and relative social power. -

Pox Britannica: Smallpox Inoculation in Britain, 1721-1830 Abstract Inoculation has an important place in the history of medicine: not only was it the first form of preventive medicine but its history spans the so-called eighteenth century 'medical revolution'. A study of the myriad of pamphlets, books and articles on the controversial practice casts new light on these fundamental changes in the medical profession and medical practice. Whereas historians have associated the abandonment of old humoural theories and individualised therapy in favour of standardised techniques with the emergence of new institutions in the second half of the century, inoculation suggests that changes began as early as the 1720s. Though inoculation was initially accompanied by a highly individualised preparation of diet and drugs, more routinised sequences of therapy appeared the 1740s and by the late 1760s all inoculated patients followed exactly the same preparative regimen. This in turn made possible the institutionalised provision of inoculation, first through the system of poor relief, later by dispensaries and charitable societies.
