Almost all the workplaces were shut about for 66 days from 26 March 2020. As a result, the number of workplace deaths is little bit low than previous year 2019, but not that much low as it is supposed to be. Every year Safety and Rights Society (SRS) is monitoring newspaper for collecting and preserving information on workplace accidents and the number of victims of those accidents and publish a report after conducting the yearly survey – this year report is the tenth in the series. SRS depends not only the newspapers as the source for information but it also accumulated some information from online media and through personal contact with workers representative organizations. This year 26 newspapers (15 national and 11 regional) were monitored and the present report includes information on workplace deaths (as well as injuries that took place in the same incident that resulted in the deaths) throughout 2020. -
Cropping Patterns in Mymensingh Region: Diversity, Constraint and Potential
Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 217-235, 2017 Cropping Patterns in Mymensingh Region: Diversity, Constraint and Potential A Khatun1*, N Parvin1, M M R Dewan2 and A Saha1 ABSTRACT A consistent and comprehensive database on cropping pattern, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area is the prime importance for guiding policy makers, researchers, extentionists and development agencies for the future research and development planning. The study was carried out all the upazilas of Mymensingh region during 2015-16 using pre-designed and pre-tested semi- structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping pattern, crop diversity and cropping intensity. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman occupied about one- half of net cropped area (NCA) of the region distributed to 46 out of 47 upazilas. Single Boro cropping pattern ranked the second position which covered 23% of NCA distributed in 45 upazilas. A total of 129 cropping patterns were identified in the whole area of Mymensingh region under this investigation. The highest number of (30) cropping patterns were identified in Pakundia upazila of Kishoreganj and the lowest was (10) in Sreebardi of Sherpur. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported (0.111) in Mithamoin of Kishoreganj followed by 0.114 at Khaliajuri in Netrokona. The highest value of CDI was observed 0.933 at Dewanganj in Jamalpur followed by 0.920 at Bhairab in Kishoreganj. The range of cropping intensity values was recorded 101-249%. The maximum value was for Hossainpur and minimum for Itna and Mithamoin in Kishoreganj. At a glance the calculated CDI of Mymensingh region was 0.840 and the average cropping intensity was 187%. -

College students, in pursuit of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information, are particularly affected by gatekeeping as strong social and cultural norms restrict their access to information and services. This paper examines mobile phone usage for obtaining health information in Mirzapur, Bangladesh. It contrasts college students’ usage with that of the general population, asks whether students are using digital technologies for health information in innovative ways, and examines how gender affects this. Methods: This study relies on two surveys: a 2013–2014 General Survey that randomly sampled 854 households drawn from the general population and a 2015 Student Survey that randomly sampled 436 students from two Mirzapur colleges. Select focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were undertaken with students. Icddr,b’s Ethical Review Board granted ethical clearance. Results: The data show that Mirzapur’s college students are economically relatively well positioned, more likely to own mobile and smart phones, and more aware of the internet than the general population. They are interested in health information and use phones and computers to access information. -

Phone: +8801825446384; E-mail: [email protected] Received: 23 May 2021/Accepted: 19 June 2021/ Published: 30 June 2021 Abstract: The current study was conducted to evaluate the socio-economic profile of fisher communities in Dengar beel under Melandah Upazila of Jamalpur district, Bangladesh. A total of 45 fishers were surveyed from November 2020 to April 2021. It was found that the family size of 53% of fishers was medium, consisting of 5- 6 members. Most of the fisher communities belonged to the age group above 45 years old, represented by 100% Muslim. About 73% of fishers were less educated, 13% primary level, 7% secondary level, and 7% Secondary School Certificate passed and above, respectively. Most of the fishers (60%) have katcha houses with tin roofing, 7% have katcha house with straw roofs, 13% have semi- pucca houses and 20% have pucca houses. Around 93% of fishers used their own tube-well while only 7% used neighbours’ tube-well. All of the fisher household were connected with electricity supply. -

Bangladesh Rice J. 21 (2) : 123-141, 2017 Cropping Pattern, Intensity and Diversity in Dhaka Region N Parvin1*, A Khatun1, M K Quais1 and M Nasim1 ABSTRACT Sustainable crop production in Bangladesh through improvement of cropping intensity and crop diversity in rice based cropping system is regarded as increasingly important in national issues. Planning of agricultural development largely depends on the authentic, reliable and comprehensive statistics of the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity of a particular area, which will provide guideline to our policy makers, researchers, extensionists and development workers. The study was conducted over all 46 upazilas of Dhaka agricultural region in 2015 using pretested semi-structured questionnaire with a view to document the existing cropping patterns, cropping intensity and crop diversity in the region. From the present study, it was observed that about 48.27% net cropped area (NCA) is covered by exclusive rice cropping systems whereas deep water rice occupied about 16.57% of the regional NCA. The most dominant cropping pattern Boro−Fallow−T. Aman alone occupied about 22.59% of net cropped area (NCA) with its distribution over 32 upazilas out of 46. The second largest area was covered by single Boro cropping pattern, which was spread over 44 upazilas. Total number of cropping patterns was observed 164. The highest number of cropping pattern was identified 35 in Tangail sadar and Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka district and the lowest was seven in Bandar of Narayanganj and Palash of Narsingdi district. The lowest crop diversity index (CDI) was reported as 0.70 in Dhamrai followed by 0.72 in Monohardi of Narsingdi. -

Moniruzzaman2 Department ofAgricultural Statistics, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh 2202, Bangladesh 1Department of Fisheries Management, BA U, Mymensingh 2Senior Officer, Sonali Bank, Dhaka * Corresponding address Abstract On the basis of fish culture status 96 ponds of the study area were classified into 4 categories like wild stock (27%), extensive culture (24%), improved extensive culture (33%) and semi-intensive culture (16%). Percentage of small, medium and large ponds were 38, 44, and 18 respectively whereas education levels below SSC, below Bachelor and above were 43, 38 and 19 respectively and single owners belonged to 54% of the ponds. Per hectare yields of extensive, improved extensive and semi-intensive categories of culture were 1.3, 2.12 and 4.0 metric tons respectively and their net return were 46, 63 and 92 thousand taka respectively. Considering the problems of fish culture, multiple ownership was found to be the most important one. Key words: Socio-economic, Pond fishery Fish and fishery resources play a vital role in improving socioeconomic conditions, combating malnutrition, earning foreign currency and creating employment opportunities in Bangladesh. There are 5,277,571 hectare water bodies of which 915,506 hectare ponds which are suitable for fish culture, but most of them remain unused (BBS 1997). If the existing ponds are brought under fish culture by exact planning, proper management and re-excavation, the present fish production level can easily be increased 2 to 3 times to reach the recommended quantity of fish for the people of Bangladesh. -

EMERGING EVIDENCE REPORT 5 MAPPING OF CHILDREN ENGAGED IN THE WORST FORMS OF CHILD LABOUR IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN OF THE LEATHER INDUSTRY IN BANGLADESH A K M Maksud, Khandaker Reaz Hossain, Sayma Sayed and Amit Arulanantham July 2021 ABOUT THIS REPORT This mapping of children in the worst forms of child labour (WFCL) in the leather sector of Bangladesh was conducted in May–August 2020. WFCL are not always obvious and, without better understanding of where, why and how it is happening, the exploitation and abuse of children in the workforce in Bangladesh will continue. This mapping provides a detailed assessment of where children are working in the leather supply chain in Bangladesh, what they are doing, how they came to be doing it and what their conditions of work and experiences are. Furthermore, and critically, it evidences the children’s perceptions of themselves and others as child labourers – the jobs and areas of the sector that they feel comprise WFCL, and the jobs they feel are the most difficult or dangerous to do and that children should not have to do.
