The Role of Atmospheric Turbulence on Cloud Processes Friday, May 3 12:30 PM Bowen Hall Rm 222 Lance Collins Cloud droplets nucleate on dust particles when warm, moist air rises and cools to supersaturation vapor conditions in Cornell University the upper atmosphere. The droplets initially grow by condensation until they reach a few tens of microns when coalescence takes over as the dominant mechanism for growth. Classical models in the meteorological literature assume the coalescence is predominantly driven by the differential settling of droplets of different sizes. However, the time required to reach this end stage mechanism can be much shorter than these microphysical models predict. It is believed that atmospheric turbulence could explain the acceleration of cloud formation. Turbulence impacts the droplet processes in multiple ways: (i) due to the density mismatch, droplets tend to cluster outside of vortices, increasing their collision rate; (ii) droplet relative motions are enhanced by turbulence; and (iii) turbulence increases the coalescence efficiency of droplet collisions. We will review evidence for all three mechanisms based on direct numerical simulations and experiments of droplet laden turbulence performed by us and our collaborators. Lance R. Collins is serving his second term as the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering at Cornell University. Prior to that he was the S. C. Thomas Sze Director of the Sibley School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. In 2011, he was part of the team that successfully bid to partner with New York City to build Cornell Tech, which opened its Roosevelt Island campus in 2017. In his role as dean, Collins has accelerated the college’s efforts in diversity. -

APS Announces 2018 Prize and Award Recipients The APS would like to congratulate the recipients of these APS prizes and awards. They will be presented during APS award ceremonies throughout the year. Both March and April meeting award ceremonies are open to all APS members and their guests. At the March Meeting, the APS Prizes and Awards Ceremony will be held Monday, March 5, 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles, CA. At the April Meeting, the APS Prizes and Awards Ceremony will be held Sunday, April 15, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, OH. In addition to the award ceremonies, most prize and award recipients will give invited talks during the meeting. Some recipients of prizes, awards are recognized at APS unit meetings. Also, we highlight a special award received by Professor Emeritus Irvin Glassman, which culminated in a joint party celebrating his 95th birthday where many friends and colleagues from around the U.S. and the world joined him in Princeton. We welcomed Patricia Falcone ’74 (chair of the MAE Advisory Council) to campus during which time she met with students and gave a talk on engineering and national security. Rosenthal (*1863–1907) Nach Angabe von Diana Templeton-Killan, der Enkeltochter von Berta Kamm und somit Großnichte von Otto Stern (E-Mail vom 3.12.2015 an Horst Schmidt- Böcking) war Ottos Großvater Abraham Stern. Abraham hatte 5 Kinder mit seiner ersten Frau Nanni Freund. Nanni starb kurz nach der Geburt des fünften Kindes. Bald danach heiratete Abraham Berta Ben- der, mit der er 6 weitere Kinder hatte. Turner Takes Over at the NSF
PEOPLE APPOINTMENTS Turner takes over at the NSF On 1 October 2003 the astrophysicist the Physics of the Universe, which earlier this Michael Turner, from the University of year produced a comprehensive report Chicago in the US, took over as assistant entitled: "Connecting Quarks with the director for mathematical and physical Cosmos: Eleven Science Questions for the sciences at the US National Science New Century". Turner, who will serve at the NSF for chemistry, materials and astronomy, as well a two-year term, replaces Robert Eisenstein, as multidisciplinary and educational pro who was recently appointed as president of grammes. Turner recently chaired the US the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico National Research Council's Committee on (see CERN Courier June 2003 p29). Institute of Advanced Study announces its next director Peter Goddard is to become the new director what was to become string theory. Goddard of the Institute for Advanced Study, is currently master of St John's College, Princeton, from 1 January 2004. Goddard, a Cambridge, UK, and is professor of mathematical physicist, is well known for his theoretical physics at the University of work in string theory and conformal field Cambridge, where he was instrumental in theory, for which he received the ICTP's helping to establish the Isaac Newton Dirac prize in 1997, together with David Institute for Mathematical Sciences. HERZFELD, BORN in Vienna, Austria, studied at the Kuniversity there and at the universities in Zurich and Göttingen and took courses at the ETH (Technical Insti- tute) in Zurich before receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Vienna in 1914. In 1925, after four years in the Austro- Hungarian Army during World War I and five years as Privatdozent in Munich with Professors Arnold Sommerfeld and Kasimir Fajans, he was named extraordinary professor of theoretical physics at Munich University. A year later he accepted a visiting professorship in the United States at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. This visiting position developed into a regular faculty appointment at Johns Hopkins, which he held until 1936. Herzfeld then moved to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he remained until his death in 1978. As physics chairman at Catholic University until 1961, Herzfeld built a small teaching-oriented department into a strong research department that achieved national renown for its programs in statistical mechanics, ultrasonics, and theoretical research on the structure of molecules, gases, liquids, and solids. NSF Directorate for Engineering Advisory Committee Member Biographies Spring 2013 LINDA ABRIOLA is Dean of the School of Engineering and Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts University. Dean Abriola also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. She received her Ph.D. and master’s degrees from Princeton University and a bachelor’s degree from Drexel University, all in civil engineering. Dean Abriola is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a member of both the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). She is currently an elected member of the NAE governing Council and served on the executive board of the American Society of Engineering Education’s Engineering Deans Council. An author of more than 130 refereed publications, Dean Abriola is an `expert on the multiphase transport, fate, and recovery of contaminants in the subsurface. She has been the recipient of a number of awards, including the Association for Women Geoscientist’s Outstanding Educator Award, the National Ground Water Association’s Distinguished Darcy Lectureship, designation as an ISI Highly Cited Author in Ecology/Environment, and the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program Project of the Year Award in Remediation. LANCE COLLINS is currently the Joseph Silbert Dean of Engineering at Cornell University. He served as the S.C. Thomas Sze Director of the Sibley School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from 2005- 2010, and he was the Director of Graduate Studies for Aerospace Engineering from 2003-2005. Over the past year, he served on Cornell’s Strategic Plan Advisory Council that wrote the university’s strategic plan.
