Consequently, Armenians have repeatedly been forced to fight for their freedom. Society highly valued such resistance and Church lead- ers glorified these combatants as heroes. During the Armenian–Persian war in the th5 century, the death of Christian soldiers was defined as self-sacrifice and the Church canonized them as “fighting martyrs.” This attitude towards sacred militarism continued to be evident from that time through the present. The main focus of the following article is to examine how the Armenian Church legitimized the use of violence, espe- cially during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict (1988–1994). Having completed his two terms as President, from 2008 to 2018, Serzh Sargsyan’s attempt to remain in power became obvious. This attempt also made it evident that the amended 2015 Constitution, which he had promoted to invigorate democratization by shifting power from the office of the President to the Parliament and the office of the Prime Minister, was merely a ploy to extend his rule. It was also the proverbial “last straw that broke the camel’s back.” A kleptocratic, semi-authoritarian regime that appeared to control all the levers of power and of the economy suddenly, and unexpectedly, collapsed. This regime change—which the leader of the protests and incoming new prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, referred to as a “Velvet Revolution”—was peaceful, something unusual for a post-Soviet republic. Subsequent parliamentary elections brought to power a new generation, younger deputies mostly between the ages of twenty-five to forty. A similar generation change also characterized the formation of the government. Youth, however, also means inexperience as almost none of the new deputies and ministers had held any political position in the past.

The beginning of the victorious year was Navasard 1 (=August 11). New discoveries connected with the observations of the starry sky (the 6th millennium BC - Zorats kar (Karahunj), the first half of the 3rd millennium BC - Metsamor), archaeological excavations and petroglyphs in the Armenian Highland, bear witness to the deep Haykian roots, and that the glorious victory of Hayk symbolized the beginning of a very important new epoch of the Armenian history.

    OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2018 PROJECT AGAPE UPDATES 1993 UPDATES 2018 PROJECT AGAPE 25 years in service The team leader Wanda Watts and the family members October-December 2018 OCTOBER - BUILDING TEAM FROM WNCC Another family was blessed by a building team which arrived on October 4th under the leadership of Wanda Watts. The team spent a day in Yerevan to rest Inside this issue: after the tiring long trip and left for Berdzor, Artsakh on the next day. On the way to Berdzor the team visited the October - Building Team from WNCC 1 Khor Virap monastery or, as the teams used to call, the Saint Gregory monastery and then the Noravank monas- October - Joint Celebration Team from Both 2 tery. The Mother Armenia statue was erected in 1967 in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan as a female personification of Armenia. Its meaning and symbolism have been reworked during different collective crises for the Armenian nation.
