Each year we will go through the following four-phase cycle: 1) Understanding Social and Cultural Context; 2) Deepening our understanding of Mission and Vision; 3) Cultivating Authentic Christian Practices; 4) Sustaining Ministry. The first year of this cycle will begin this September. This “Thriving Congregations” program is an excellent fit for our vision to move toward greater parish health. The goal of this program is for all of us members of St. Spyridon’s to develop understanding of the needs and interests of people today, to create real relationships with people in our neighborhoods, to help us all connect more deeply with God and each other, and to contribute to the flourishing of our church and of the communities that surround us. For more information please contact Gia Harrigan, our Parish Council President. On a related leadership note, Gia and I have invited all the members of the Parish Council to set SMART goals for our council and for ourselves individually in 2021. (SMART stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-limited.) At a recent leadership retreat we identified three opportunity areas for us as a council: 1) Growing the individual spirituality of our members; 2) Helping all members get reconnected with the church, recovering connection lost due to COVID precautions; 3) Empowering parishioners to engage in church life and leadership. First, to grow the individual spirituality of our church we must lead by example. We are challenging ourselves and each member of the council to set a goal for progress in own spirituality, which means growing as student followers of Christ. We will share our goals with a buddy and check in with our buddies throughout this year. You are encouraged to do likewise. Second, we as a Council are resolved to helping all members get reconnected with the church, especially to recover connection lost due to COVID precautions and lack of attendance. We believe this reconnection can be helped, along with the goal of fostering engagement, as follows. Finally, the Council reached consensus on the need to empower parishioners to engage and lead. The Council is too often reduced to a combined finance-stewardship-maintenance committee. Throw in a few dozen random issues that arise in the life of any parish and that is the council’s job description. But in their recent retreat, the Council expressed its unique value to the church not primarily as “doing” or even managing the operations of the church. Rather, the council has a unique responsibility to be engaging everyone and leading them to more fully offer their greatest gifts. As this engagement emerges, the Council must also harmonizing all our offerings within one unified body, working together with a clear vision of Church Life in Christ. Christ gave the church its leaders for this purpose: “to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 12-13). To this end, Gia and I have asked ourselves and all Council members to split up the membership roster and to reach out to all of our people in the next three to four months, to connect with you, to learn how you are doing, and to get to know you better. Our tradition is to pray this service of the ninth hour prior to the Pre-sanctified Liturgy. It is another taste of the “joyful sadness” characteristic of Lenten services. The Ninth Hour prayers includes the Prayer of St. Ephraim, which we are saying in our daily prayers at home, but which makes no other appearance in the weekly Lenten prayers at our parish, currently. Hope to see you then. 5:30pm: THE PRE-SANCTIFIED LITURGY, is an opportunity to receive the life-giving and spiritually nourishing Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ midweek, as well as praying for our catechumens during special litanies that occur in the middle of this service. Unfortunately, due to the restrictions in response to COVID, we will not have our traditional LENTEN DINNER AND FELLOWSHIP, along with a talk to educate and inspire us in our Lenten journey. We look forward to restoring our dinner and fellowship tradition for Lent 2022.

    The 2016 WEI International Academic Conference Proceedings Vienna, Austria PROVERBS AND RARE WORDS IN THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS, ACCORDING TO THE METAPHRASTIC MENOLOGION (INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH) Emmanouil Doundoulakis, Assistant Professor Patriarchal University Ecclesiastical Academy of Crete Heraklion Crete - Greece Abstract This paper aims to approach and examine the proverbs and rare words which are mentioned in the Lives of Saints in the Metaphrastic Menologion of 10th century, which contains 148 texts. It is important to note that the Metaphrastic Menologion is not only a Hagiographical text related to Religion, but also an informative manual for the social life, cultural customs and Linguistic issues of the era. The paper focuses on the linguistic dimension, the rare words as well as the proverbs which are mentioned in it. The majority of relevant past papers try to find the intertextuality between the Metaphrastic Menologion and other hagiographical texts which are considered to be chronologically close. But only few emphasize on the case that some phrases and words were taken from texts both ecclesiastical and of ancient Greek literature, from a long time ago. Our intention is to compare the different uses of some words, and phrases in the Lives of the Saints. Some of them are used only once, either in the Ancient or Religious Literature, while others have been mentioned in texts, many centuries ago. Their sources either in Ancient Greek Literature or in other previous Ecclesiastical texts are also revealed by this paper. Some examples are also given in order to have a clear view on how we could use these texts in classrooms.

    1 East and West: Cultural Dissonance and the “Great Schism of 1054” Margaret Trenchard-Smith, Loyola Marymount University Perception is an overwhelming force. Collective perceptions can be contra-factual. The memories of individuals, of institutions, often magnify the inconsequential, distort or omit. A failure of memory can be total, through accident or deliberate oblivion. Shared recollections and the narratives they form shape perceptions. Yet even when these things are faulty, they can have as much force as if they were sound—just as the effects of a rumor can be as damaging when false as when founded in fact.1 The “Great Schism of 1054” is perceived by many to be the momentous event that resulted in the permanent sundering of the “Western” Roman Catholic and “Eastern” Orthodox branches of Christendom.2 Factually, however, there is a problem with this perception, since it can plausibly be argued on technical and practical grounds (and has been argued by scholars like Francis Dvornik and Steven Runciman) that no schism occurred in 1054—certainly not the “Great Schism.”3 The perception of schism came about through cultural dissonance and alienation East and West which grew until at last the divorce became reality. When precisely that happened, however, is unclear. If not in 1054, when did the formal schism of the Great Church occur? Did it occur? From whose perspective, and by what criteria? There is no scholarly consensus on these questions.4 Please bear in mind that this paper has been written by an historian, not a theologian. These

    THE FEAST OF SAINT SPYRIDON AT THE PATRIARCHATE On Thursday, December 12/25, 2020, the Patriarchate celebrated the feast of our Father among the Saints Spyridon the wonderworker, Bishop of Trimythus of Cyprus. On this feast, the Church commemorates Saint Spyridon, who was a shepherd from Cyprus, a married man and a father of a daughter. After his wife’s death, he was called to become a shepherd of logical sheep. He was offered the Episcopal Office of the city Trimythus of Cyprus. In this prestigious position, he was also proven to be great in virtue. He was extremely charitable and a philanthropist. He was deemed worthy of the gifts of clairvoyance and of working miracles. Through his prayer, he stopped the draught and brought rain to the land again, and when the rain became a flood, he prayed and stopped it. He spoke to his dead daughter and received her answer regarding a woman’s will; he turned a snake into gold to save a poor man and afterwards he turned the gold back into the snake; he destroyed the sheds of those who stored wheat in times of famine, changed the route of river waters and had angels co-celebrating the Divine Liturgy with him. Saint Spyridon participated in the 1st Ecumenical Synod in A.D. 325 and strongly supported the Doctrine of the One Essence of the Son with the Father. His sacred relics are kept incorrupt in Corfu. His commemoration at the Patriarchate of Jerusalem was celebrated at the Holy Monastery dedicated to him, which is located near Damascus Gate inside the Wall of the Old City of Jerusalem.

DECEMBER 12 St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral Ambo - Page 1 Saint Spyridon of Tremithus was born towards the end of the third century on the island of Cyprus. He was a shepherd, and had a wife and children. He used all his substance for the needs of his neighbors and the homeless, for which the Lord rewarded him with a gift of wonderworking. He healed those who were incurably sick, and cast out demons. After the death of his wife, during the reign of Constantine the Great (306-337), he was made Bishop of Tremithus, Cyprus. As a bishop, the saint did not alter his manner of life, but combined pastoral service with deeds of charity. According to the witness of Church historians, Saint Spyridon participated in the sessions of the First Ecumenical Council in the year 325.
