St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 5 PHILOPTOCHOS NEWS

Dear Philoptochos Members and Parishioners, Greetings! As we welcome September and feeling the excitement of the new Ecclesiastical Year, we ask our Lord to give us good health so that we may continue with commitment in achieving our goals as a philan- thropic body of His Church. Let us re-dedicate ourselves to our mission of philanthropy with passion for excellence, so that working together we may build a more dynamic Philoptochos in our own local chapter, on the Metropolis and the National levels as well! On September 22, 2018 the Metropolis of Chicago Philoptochos luncheon will take place at the Café La Cave in Des Plaines. The theme for this year will be “All Things are Possible with Faith and Love”. The proceeds from the luncheon will benefit the Metropolis of Chicago Philanthropy Fund, the St. Iakovos Retreat Center and the Metropolis Philoptochos Philanthropic Endeavors. Please make your reservations by calling the Church office. Let us all come together in this beautiful setting and celebrate the good works of Philoptochos! On Sunday, September 30th, we will have our own “Annual Fall Luncheon”. This year the Philoptochos board agreed to dedicate the proceeds to the fire victims in Greece and to other philanthropic undertak- ings. We would appreciate your support again to help us raise funds for this tragedy that afflicted so many of our people in Greece. In closing, I would like to thank you again for your support and for your love to Philoptochos. May our Lord bless us with good health so that we may continue to work for His Holy Church. With Sisterly Love, Toula Georgiopoulos, President

6 The Voice SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Welcome back to Sunday School! Our classes begin on September 9th. Registrations are being accepted in the Church office, so please make sure to register your children as soon as possible to allow us to plan accordingly. Many thanks to all of you who attended the Back to School picnic on Saturday, August 25th. The retreat featured many arts and crafts, and the blessing of the backpacks. Many thanks to all the donors and volunteers. The kids all enjoyed playing games together and sharing a meal provided by the PTA. We have an exciting year planned and would like to focus more on having the students participate weekly in either contributing to our food pantry or bringing a monetary donation to class. An important part of Sunday School is teaching students the importance of stewardship and creating the habit of giving back. In the spirit of doing so, we will once again have our 10th Walk for the IOCC on November 3rd at the scenic Lake Katherine. For those of you who have attended in the past, thank you and we hope to see you again this year. For any who have yet to join us please do. Lake Katherine is beautiful and as easy path to walk. All the proceeds from this event go to the IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) who truly do an amazing job with getting the funds they receive to the right place—in fact 94% goes directly to where the need exists. Please consider joining us for a great event. Zoe Kopanis, Sunday School Director

St. Spyridon Hellenic Orthodox Church 11 Restoration Project As you can see outside, the restoration of our land- scaping is almost complete. The existing pavers that surround the church were trapping water and heaved to the point of damaging our building. After a five year study the project finally came to fruition. The pavers all around the church proper, as well as the asphalt underneath them, were replaced with ce- ment, while some decorative pavers were placed by the front church doors. All the landscaping will re- main in place, but the existing red stone borders were replaced by curbs. The front curb is now a long ramp while an additional ramp is located by the north main entrance. The ramps serve to give us the proper pitch for water to drain out to the parking lot. One of the main elements of the project was that the three northside church down spouts were funneled under- ground so they can drain by the parking lot. All TOTAL PROJECT COST: $130,000 around, the church is already showing better drain- age, keeping water away from the building and mak- FUNDS RAISED SO FAR: $20,195 ing it safer for all our parishioners.
