General Characteristics of the District 1.1 Location & Geographical Area : Ahmedabad District is one of the developed district of the Vibrant Gujarat. It is located in the middle region of Gujarat and lies between 21’-58’ to 23’-3’ North latitudes, 71’-37’ to 72’-50’ East Longitudes. The District is surrounded on the north by Mehsana and Gandhinagar district, on the South by Gulf of Cambay and Bhavnagar district, on the East by Kheda district and on the West by Surendranagar district. The total Geographical area of Ahmedabad District is 8087.59 Sq.K.M. 1.2 Topography : Ahmedabad district is located in Central Gujarat. It comes under Seismic Zone- III. Ahmedabad is one of the industrially developed district in the state of Gujarat having Large,Micro,Small and medium scale industries of various types. A large number of industries related to textiles, chemicals, machinery, metal products, pharmaceutical, engineering, plastics, electrical appliances, electronics, passenger cars etc. are located in the district. A well developed infrastructure, prudent industrial policy of the state government and a peaceful industrial atmosphere have been the vital factors which have contributed to the industrial growth in the district. There are 12 main Industrial Estates, 12 Special Economic Zones, and 10 Industrial Parks/Developers in Ahmedabad district. However, the industrial development restrictd to the surrounding areas of the metropolitan city of Ahmedabad and certain towns of the district. Dhandhuka, Ranpur, Barwala, Detroj, Mandal and Viramgam are the Industrially backward talukas of the District. The State Government , under New industrial Policy, identified certain areas of backward talukas of district in Category- I for its development by providing attractive incentives to the investors resulting to this , many industrial units have been coming up on Sarkhej-Bavla Road and Sarkhej – Viramgam Road. Ahmedabad city is commercial capital and major industrial centre of Gujarat and has been classified as Mega City. In all 17 Municipalities and 30 Gram Panchayats have been merged in the city vide Urban Development & Urban Housing Department, Govt. of Gujarat notification. Government of India plans to develop a dedicated freight corridor (DFC) linking Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. The proposed DFC passes through Six states in India, of which Gujarat accounts for 38 % (564 km) of total DFC length (1483 km). The influenced areas of 150 km on either sides of DFC is being developed as ‘Delhi-Mumbai Industrial -2- Corridor’ (DMIC). Almost 62 % of the total areas of Gujarat (18 out of 26 districts) would be benefited by DMIC development. It proposes to stretch the DMIC as ‘Costal Corridor’, extending it from Ahmedabad to Dholera and Bhavnagar to,up to Kalpsar dam-cum-tidal power project. The state Government has identified 82 links in the DMIC. Influenced areas to upgrade them into Two/Four-lane carriageway offering connectivity between ports, industrial estates, hinterlands, markets and points of agricultural produce. Recently the State Government has planned to develop the Dholera Port. M/s. Dholera Port Ltd. has been established for this purpose. Gujarat government aims to develop Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) as an International Port city, projected to be larger than Shanghai. Ahmedabad District has got a well developed infrastructure which is conductive for the growth of both industries, services and agriculture. District is well connectd by road, rail and air transport system with rest of the country and other parts of the State.The district is reasonable well developed infrastructure in terms of Hospitals (Govt. as well as Pvt.) primary health Centres, Universities and colleges for various discipline, Higher Schools and primary Schools. # Power supply Network: Power stations in Vatva and Sabarmati. Four 220 KV substations are present in Salejada, Viramgam, Dhanki and Nikol. Four 132 KV substations are also present at Sabarmati, Vatwa,, Dhandhuka and Barwala. 66 KV and 11 KV distribution system spread over the district. 1.3 Availability of Minerals : Although district is not rich in minerals, deposits of minerals like brick earth, black trap,limestone and sand have been located in the district. There are 82 Leases in Ahmedabad District. The leases scattered in Dascroi, Dholka,Ranpur,City,Mndal & Barwala Talukas. As per the Commissioner letter dated 09/05/2009 the block system is adopted in Dascroi Taluka’s villages- Mahijada,Kasindra,Visalpur,Navapura and also in Ranpur Taluka’s village Devaliya, other blocks identified in Dascroi, Dholka and Ranpur Taluka. As per the National norms 33 % of total land should be forest area but district possess neglible area of reserve forest ; mostly confirmed to Dhandhuka, Barwala, Dascroi and Viramgam talukas. Promotion of forming of raw materials should be carried out seedling species like eucalyptus, Silanthus and Acacia can be provided and farmer should be encouraged for free planting, specific requirements of vincer and plywood industries should also be kept in while encouraging farming. 1.5 ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP : There are 649 total villages in Ahmedabad district. The district contains of 11 talukas namely (1) City (2) Dascroi, (3) Dholka, (4) Bavla, (5 ) Dhandhuka (6) Ranpur, (7) Barwala, (8) Sanand, (9) Viamgam, (10) Mandal and (11) Detroj-Rampura. -4- 2. Source :- GIDC,Ahmedabad. The state government is planning to set up three new industrial estates around Ahmedabad all to be developed by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC). Industrial parks around Ahmedabad are also on the cards. As per Sources from the state industrial department, the Three new GIDC estates in Ahmedabad district will be at Bor and Hirapur villages in Sanand taluka, Hansalpur village in Mandal taluka and near Vasna Chacharvadi village on the border of Daskroi, Dholka and Bavala talukas.
