TO LIVE BETTER, WE MUST LIVE UNITED.

2018 COMMUNITY REPORT

OUR MISSION: The United Way of Youngstown and the will create positive change by collaborating with partners to educate and empower children and families in the Mahoning Valley.

DEAR FRIENDS:

As we wrap up a successful 2018 and start to celebrate our Centennial in 2019, we want to personally thank all of you who have made it possible for United Way to have generations of impact. From our roots in 1919 to the organization we have grown into today, it all begins with you. What excites and energizes all of us is the work that is being done. From the incredible agencies we fund to the work United Way leads, lives are changing for the better in our community.

Change doesn’t happen alone, and we are thankful to have you on this journey with us. We are now working with all nine Youngstown Elementary Schools, as well as Youngstown Community School, Girard, Liberty and Campbell with our Success After 6 initiative. This initiative is much more than an afterschool program, although we do have close to 650 children taking part in out-of-school activities. This includes academics, enrichment, field trips, mentoring programs and so much more. We encourage all of you to reach out and schedule a time to visit one of our Success After 6 sites. Please contact us and we will make this happen. Success After 6 is one of the many wonderful things we are doing in partnership with you. Please look through this Annual Report to learn more about where your dollars are going.

A big thank you to all who helped us again raise in excess of 3 million dollars. The Mahoning Valley always steps up and exceeds our expectations. We are doing so much more than raising money, and that is why the community is trusting our United Way with their charitable dollars. For a third straight year, Charity Navigator gave our United Way a 4 star rating, their highest award, and ranked us among the top non- profits in Ohio for accountability and transparency.

2019 is a very special year for us, and we look forward to making an even greater impact in the next 100 years!

On behalf of our staff and Board of Directors, a sincere thank you for LIVING UNITED.

Sincerely,

Bob Hannon, President Ted Schmidt, Board Chair “I think it’s a perfect intro into kindergarten. I was really happy that he was in the school he’ll be attending in the fall. I saw him grow a lot, especially his confidence when he was in Success By 6.” Parent of Success By 6 student South Range Elementary School

“Success By 6 got her motivated to like school. She struggled at first. She didn’t want to learn. But this got her into the routine and she started to get excited about school. It’s an excellent program.” Parent of Success By 6 student Struthers Elementary School UNITED WE STAND UP FOR EDUCATION IN THE MAHONING VALLEY. SUCCESS BY 6 started in 2009 in two school districts. In 2018, this pre-kindergarten readiness program was in 19 school districts and 25 school sites. Our United Way partnered with the local educators to prepare 610 students for their first year in school. The students saw an average 13 point increase in their pre and post literacy test scores. Students in several districts were exposed to STEM curriculum through our partnership with OH WOW! and they received enrichment from the Ohio State University Extension.  PNC Foundation  Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County  The Youngstown Foundation  The Zita M. & Joseph DiYorio Foundation UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley knows the best way to prepare our students is to provide a strong foundation. We invest in our youngest children through our early education initiatives that reach them before they even enter school. We know in today’s world, pre-school is not always an option for our families. Our goal is to step in and provide resources to fill that gap. We achieve this by getting books into the hands of babies and toddlers as well as literacy resources to their parents and guardians. We do this by preparing these future students for success by giving them a first hand experience of what life will be like once they officially become a kindergartener. United with our partner agencies who also provide valuable early childhood education programming, we are establishing a strong foundation so essential to future success in the classroom.

IMAGINATION LIBRARY was introduced to the Valley by our United Way in 2014. Since that time, we have IMAGINATION LIBRARY served more than 9,000 children. Currently, we have 5,300 SUPPORTERS AND PARTNERS: children receiving a free book once a month sent to their home. UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley wants to build upon the foundation we help set with Success By 6, Imagination Library, and the valuable programs run by our partner agencies. In 2015, we launched Success After 6 with the goal of continuing to strengthen our students. We partner with 5 school districts, various enrichment partners, and community volunteers to provide additional resources to the students to help improve their academics. The cornerstone of our Success After 6 initiative is an afterschool program that takes place at each school site. We also partner with community volunteers and organizations to bring mentoring into the schools to inspire the children to dream big and provide them with the tools to achieve their goals. “Success After 6 has been one of the most successful programs as far as increasing attendance, reducing discipline incidents, and improving student performance on both state and benchmark assessments.” John LaPlante, Chief Information Officer Youngstown City Schools UNITED WE STAND UP FOR EDUCATION IN THE MAHONING VALLEY.

UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley focuses on education initiatives, but we know to truly break down the barriers to success we need to concentrate on the whole child and the whole family. Through Success After 6, we bring wrap around services to more than 4,000 students and their family members at 13 different school sites. We bring resources directly into the schools. From food pantries to vision screenings to financial education to promise neighborhoods, we want the families to receive the assistance they need.

FOOD PANTRIES served 800 families at Youngstown Community School, Taft Elementary School, and Williamson Elementary School. 300 turkeys and hams were also distributed during the holidays. UNITED WE CONFRONT THE STRUGGLES FAMILIES FACE IN MAHONING COUNTY.

Change truly does not happen alone. Our collaboration with Sight for All United, Classic Optical, Essilor Vision Foundation, Akron Children’s Hospital, Mercy Health, Youngstown Lions Club, Vallourec, YSU Nursing Department, and various other organizations produced amazing results. During the 2017-2018 school year, after screening 2,000 Youngstown City School students, 180 students received eyeglasses. These students experienced a 2.4%, higher attendance rate, a 41%lower discipline rate, and an 8% higher pass rate on the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. We expanded the initiative for the 2018-2019 school year and included Liberty’s Blott Guy PK-6 School. More than 200 volunteers conducted vision screenings for 2,500 students. From there 454 students went through doctor exams and 253 students received 2 pairs of eye glasses, one for home and one for school. We will monitor their progress for the second half of the school year and report back the results!

TAFT PROMISE NEIGHBORHOOD focuses on the 4,909 children and adults living in the Taft Neighborhood on Youngstown’s South Side. The coalition is made up of 40 community partners. Our United Way leads the Education Council for TPN, which helps facilitate programming for the students and families of Taft Elementary School. In 2018, TPN moved into the former Youngstown Fire House on South Avenue, which allowed it to have much more visibility on the highly traveled corridor. It served as a base for our 2018 Day of Caring. In addition, Community Legal Aid held walk-in office hours with Neighborhood Law Project Attorneys, and assisted with 164 cases in the Taft Neighborhood. TPN hosted two felony-friendly job fairs attracting 400 job seekers.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE provides free tax services in partnership with AARP for low to moderate income individuals. VITA engages 78 volunteers, who help prepare tax returns in the Mahoning Valley. For the 2018 Tax Season, volunteers filed 3,861 tax returns with more than $2 million being refunded to individuals. VITA helps people avoid high fees and allows them to reinvest all of their money back into the local community. Our United Way is also a part of the Financial Stability partnership, and through this collaboration we host several Super Saturday events, which provide VITA services as well as a financial fair and financial literacy classes. We also increased our outreach to the Hispanic community by hosting a Super Saturday event at OCCHA.

UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is growing its volunteer base. Our campaign success would not be possible without our volunteer coordinators who are key liaisons in their individual workplace. Our Success After 6 initiative would not be possible without our mentors and tutors. Our Day of Caring expands every year thanks to the dedicated organizations and businesses who send volunteers to help us fight blight in the City of Youngstown. Our Women United! group continues to grow and engage women in brand new ways not only offering them opportunities to give back to their community, but also network with each other.

NO MATTER THE OBSTACLES. NO MATTER THE ODDS. WE SURROUND OUR VALLEY’S MOST CRITICAL PROBLEMS AND WE FIGHT.

DAY OF CARING brought together 1,000 volunteers from 90 different businesses and organizations on the first Friday in September. Together they improved 160 properties, removed 850 cubic yards of brush and debris, cleaned 1.7 miles of sidewalks, disposed of 367 illegally dumped tires, installed 139 smoke detectors in 55 homes, installed 124 L.E.D. lights on occupied homes, and helped 18 partner agencies with various projects. Installing the L.E.D. lights was a new project for this year’s Day of Caring, volunteers and residents believe this will have a long lasting effect on the neighborhood’s safety.

WOMEN UNITED started in 2015 with the goal of bringing women together to help with our then new Success After 6 initiative. Since then it’s provided women with a chance to volunteer around the community and honor the moms, grandmas, and aunts of the Success After 6 children. In 2018, the steering committee wanted to provide an opportunity for women to network, so they started Women’s Wednesday Night Out. It’s a way for women to come together and celebrate their accomplishments. The event highlights women-owned businesses and successful women or community leaders from around the area, and allows United Way to share the work we are doing in the Valley. Women United has engaged 50 hands on volunteers this year and raised $12,000 to help fund the Success After 6 initiative.

This is the most money ever invested back into the community by United Way thanks to the generosity of our donors and the organization's ability to secure 21st Century Grants. We fund 41 programs under the focus areas of education and emergency services run by 35 non-profit agencies. Through our partner agencies and our United Way led initiatives, we are able to touch the lives of more than 200,000 Mahoning Valley residents.

UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley also knows change does not happen alone. Our volunteers give their time and talents every day and in a variety of ways that really help us make the most impact in the Valley. Jack Wollitz started helping the United Way 20 years ago when we started the Muransky Companies Bass Classic, one of our largest fundraisers. He spends countless hours making sure it is not only the best fishing tournament in Northeast Ohio, but also that it truly helps those in need! A few years ago, Lori Delserone started volunteering under the radar by being a reading tutor with Project More at Taft Elementary. Then she volunteered to help with the vision program, Report Card Mentoring, and became a vital part of Women United. Members of St. John’s Episcopal Church and First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown exemplify what it means to Give. Advocate. Volunteer. They help fund our in-school food pantry at Williamson Elementary, but they also volunteer every month to help distribute food to the students and families. Finally, our collaboration with Sight For All United has allowed us to reach more and more students with essential vision services and fulfill our mission to focus on the whole child. Together we are breaking down the barriers to success in the classroom! UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley founded The Leadership Club in 1983. UNITED WAY of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley is celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary in 2019. To continue its impact for the next 100 years, United Way is re-launching its Planned Giving Legacy Society by providing information to donors on how they can include United Way as part of their legacy and help improve the lives of children and families in the Mahoning Valley for years to come. Several loyal donors have already joined the Legacy Society. We are thankful for their commitment.
