Srivastava2 Abstract: This paper includes the description of 18 new species belonging to the genera Diplatys, Epilandex, Chaetospania, Auchenomus, Apachyus, Allostethus, Proreus, Adiathella, Kosmetor and Timomenus. Besides these, 2 species are reported for the first time from the Philippine Islands. Our knowledge of the fauna of the Philippine Islands is largely based on the works of Caudell (1904), BoreUi (1915a, b, 1916, 1917, 1918,1921,1923,1926), Brindle (1966,1967) and Ramamurthi (1967). Recently, Srivastava (in press) has studied a collection of earwigs belonging to the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, which has resulted in the description of 14 new species. The present paper contains an account of some Dermaptera recently received for study from the Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii. The collection comprises 55 species (excluding 22 represented by either females or nymphs, identified up to generic level only) belonging to 28 genera, of which 18 species are new to science and 2 others are reported for the first time from the Philippines. The genus Apachyus Serville, hitherto unknown from the Philippine Islands, is represented by a new species. For some species that are represented by a large series in the collection it has been possible to study in detail the range of variations. A few females and nymphs could not be identified because the taxonomy of the whole order is based mainly on males, which often makes identification difficult. The fauna of the Philippine Islands appears to be not only rich in the number of species but also in the multiplicity of individuals for some species. -

Abstract: All of the known Indo-Australian species of Dorylinae, 4 in Dorylus and 34 in Aenictus, are included in this revision. Eight of the Aenictus species are described as new: artipus, chapmani, doryloides, exilis, huonicus, nganduensis, philiporum and schneirlai. Phylo genetic and numerical analyses resulted in the discarding of two extant subgenera of Aenictus (Typhlatta and Paraenictus) and the loose clustering of the species into 5 informal " groups" within the unified genus Aenictus. A consistency test for phylogenetic characters is discussed. The African and Indo-Australian doryline species are compared, and available information in the biology of the Indo-Australian species is summarized. The " true " army ants are defined here as equivalent to the subfamily Dorylinae. Not included are species of Ponerinae which have developed legionary behavior independently (see Wilson, E. O., 1958, Evolution 12: 24-31) or the subfamily Leptanillinae, which is very distinct and may be independent in origin. The Dorylinae are not as well developed in the Indo-Australian area as in Africa and the New World tropics. Dorylus itself, which includes the famous driver ants, is centered in Africa and sends only four species into tropical Asia. Of these, the most widespread reaches only to Java and the Celebes. Aenictus, on the other hand, is at least as strongly developed in tropical Asia and New Guinea as it is in Africa, with 34 species being known from the former regions and only about 15 from Africa. -

Laos is one of the most undersampled areas for ant biodiversity. We begin to address this knowledge gap by presenting the first checklist of Laotian ants. The list is based on a literature review and on specimens col- lected from several localities in Laos. In total, 123 species with three additional subspecies in 47 genera belonging to nine subfamilies are listed, including 62 species recorded for the first time in the country. Comparisons with neighboring countries suggest that this list is still very incomplete. The provincial distribu- tion of ants within Laos also show that most species recorded are from Vien- tiane Province, the central part of Laos while the majority of other provinces have received very little, if any, ant sampling. -

Zryanin Russian-Vietnamese Research and Technological Tropical Center, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam e-mail: [email protected] Received July 15, 2010 Abstract—The ant fauna of Nam Cat Tien in the southern part of the Cat Tien Biosphere Reserve (Dong Nai Prov., Southern Vietnam) was studied in 2007–2008. The zonal type of vegetation under study is closed deciduous tropical forests dominated by Lagerstroemia spp. in association with Dipterocarpaceae and Fabaceae. The local ant fauna comprises 272 species from 68 genera and 12 subfamilies. The maximum number of species was found in the genera Polyrhachis (31), Camponotus (21), Pheidole (21), Leptogenys (17), and Crematogaster (13). Seven ant genera (Echinopla F. Sm., Indomyrma Brown, Liomyrmex Mayr, Paratopula Wheeler, Proatta For., Protanilla Taylor, and Rotastruma Bolton) are reported from Vietnam for the first time. The ecological pattern of the ant fauna in the main forest biotopes of the study area is considered. In the dipterocarp forests in the central part of the reserve, the complex of stratobiont species was the most diverse. In the bamboo forests, the stratobiont complex is less diverse but the fraction of dendrobionts is greater. The forests with similar layer structure occurring on sand and loamy soils were shown to differ in the species composition of ant assemblages. Repeated population invento- ries of ants were carried out in 8 model plots of 100 m2 each during the dry and rainy season. -

1V.-ANTS IN THEIR DIVERSE RELATIOSS TO THE PLANT WORLD BY J. BEQUAERT The following contribution is an attempt to summarize what is known at present of the widely varied and often intricate relations which exist in nature between ants and vegetation. It has primarily grown out of an examination of certain so-called ‘‘ myrmecophytes,” or ant-plants, which I frequently came across during my travels in the Belgian Congo in quest of zoological and botanical specimens. Prof. Wheeler’s study of the feeding habits of the larva of certain plant-inhabiting ants col- lected by Messrs. H. Lang and J. P. Chapin and myself in the Congo, and Prof. I. W. Bailey’s investigation of the anatomy of myrmecophytes show that the whole subject of the mutual adaptations of plants and ants is in need of a thorough revision. It thus seemed appropriate that the present opportunity be used to bring together the many isolated and scattered observations which have been made on the interrelations of these organisms. Indeed, the problem of myrmecophytism is dominated by the feeding habits of the ants and their young and, until these are perfectly understood, we can scarcely hope to grasp the true ecological meaning and the probable origin of the extreme cases of apparent or true symbiosis between certain ants and certain species of plants. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance to inquire carefully into the various ways in which ants are wont to benefit by the vegetation. Although much time has been spent in consulting botanical and entomological papers for information bearing on the subject, undoubted- ly a number of interesting observations have escaped my notice. -

BOUDINOT , Aijaz Ahmad WACHKOO & Himender BHARTI Abstract The first ergatoid male for the ant genus Platythyrea is discovered and described. The male of P. sagei FOREL , 1900, in addition to being apterous, is unique among Platythyrea species for bearing elongate scapes. In the field, males of P. sagei were observed leaving and returning to a nest with workers, some with debris in their mandibles. The male mor- phology of P. sagei is contrasted with the worker and with female / male sets for eight Platythyrea species. Although based on limited observation, a role in colonial labor for the ergatoid males is supported by the elongate scapes, antero- posteriorly long pronotum, and robust scapes. A lectotype of Platythyrea sagei is designated. Key words: Taxonomy, lectotype designation, morphology, colony life cycle, convergent evolution, winglessness. Myrmecol. INTRODUCTION The most abundant native termite in Texas is the subterranean genus ReticulitermesHolgren (Rhiniotermitidae).Four species, the eastern subtenanean Reliculitermesflavipes (Kollar), light southemR. hageniBanks, arid n. nDialis Banks,and dark southernR. virginicus (Banks),are known to occur in Texas(Howell et al. 1987). These speciesare among the most destructiveand costly termites for homeownersand businessesalike, and are of considerableeconomic importance. Su (1993)estimated that over $ I .5 billion is spentannually for termite control in the U.S., of which 80olois spentto control subterraneantermites, More recent estimatesby the National Pest Management Associationsuggest the cost to exceed$2.5 billion annually(Anonymous 2003).
