This facility, set in the midst of the 19-acre White Oaks Park located at 111 S. Wood Dale Road, will serve as a refreshing respite away from the busy urban environment in which we live. The natural surroundings provide a feeling of escape and serenity and will allow for focus and rehabilitation. This is the perfect spot to host a party, reunion or celebration for your family and friends or a team building event, training or meeting for your staff, committee or business. Rentals can be made be reserved Monday-Sunday between 6:00 am - midnight. ROOM OPTIONS Hickory Room (Large Gathering Space) Seats 48 people Featuring 18’ foot ceilings as well as floor to ceiling windows facing the beautiful serenity of the park, natural wood, state-of-the-art lighting and a large temperature-regulating fan, the Hickory Room provides a cozy, comfortable atmosphere for any gathering. A kitchenette with ample counter space perfect for serving food and beverages, a microwave, refrigerator, and dishwasher are available to the renter. Six-foot tables and chairs are included in the rental, with set-ups available in banquet and theatre style. For larger groups, renters may also consider renting the adjacent Winnebago Room as a food and beverage service area, or for additional seating. A discounted rate is available for the second room. The Meadowview Pavilion (Outdoor Patio) Seats 20 people The Meadowview Pavilion is the gorgeous outdoor space with 18’ foot ceilings connected to the building, just off the Hickory Room. The very spacious and private space has a wonderful feel and an incredible view of the forest and open meadow of the park. The Pavilion is complimentary with the rental of The Hickory Room but may be rented independently or as an add-on to a Winnebago Room rental. Picnic tables are available in this space, and additional tables can be requested for an additional fee. The Winnebago Room (Meeting Room) Seats 10 people The Winnebago Room is the smallest room in the building and is perfect for meetings or small group gatherings. This conference-type room can accommodate up to ten guests and may be rented independently or may be used with a Hickory Room rental. A 55-inch television monitor is available for presentations and trainings, or to provide an area for guests to congregate and catch

    Cognitive Distortions and Hilarious Implementations of the Principles of Relevance Theory: The Case of Coach in Cheers (NBC, 1982-1985) Virginie Iché, MCF, Université Paul Valéry Montpellier 3, EMMA EA 741 Cognitive distortions can result from two major sources: faulty processing of the physical world (mainly due to perceptual disabilities), or erroneous treatment of the information processed (due to flawed or poor inferential disabilities or to psychopathological disorders impacting the interlocutor’s inferential abilities). Cognitive impairments in otherwise healthy individuals—such as sudden vision loss, comprehension difficulties, language impairment, attention or memory disorders, to name but a few—are cause for worry and medical scrutiny, since they are usually the sign of brain decline, depression or even dementia. Additionally, these distortions impact the way speakers interpret their cognitive environment 1 and result in unconventional behavioral or discursive reactions. Coach, one of the main characters of the first three seasons of the American sitcom Cheers (1982-1985), displays many cognitive misfires over the episodes—all of which take place (almost exclusively) in a bar in Boston, run by a former baseball player named Sam Malone and tended by Ernie Pantusso, nicknamed “Coach” because he used to be a coach. Coach’s cognitive abilities are repeatedly shown to be flawed—he is unable to understand non-literal utterances, has recurrent memory lapses (even concerning his own name) and has a hard time analyzing his environment. The canned laughter that follows Coach’s cues suggests the cognitive impairments he suffers from and the discursive consequences these distortions have on the situation and the dialogue, are nothing to worry about though—they even prove to be one of the sitcom’s comic features.

Earlier that night, Governor Mario Cuomo of New York State addressed the Democratic Party and all those across America watching the convention coverage on television. In a speech that once again demonstrated his oratorical prowess, Cuomo was transformed (at least for that political moment) from what Clinton had previously identified (in confidence to Ms. Flowers) as a "real Mafia-type" to what Tom Brokaw of NBC News exclaimed was nothing other than the "Italian prince of American politics." This dual-image of the crude, brute-like gangster and the passionate, respected sovereignty highlights an important aspect of the con­ tradictory representations of Italian-American culture while it also repeats a pattern to be found in many racist stereotypes, namely, the binary-imaging of a particular (ethnic) group.

DESCRIPTORS *Comedy; Literacy; Popular Culture; Programming (Broadcast); Social Influences; Television Research; Television Viewing; Visual Literacy IDENTIFIERS *Cheers (Television Series); *Intertextuality ABSTRACT This paper addresses the television program "Cheers" and demonstrates one way of interpreting the complexity of messages within the program. The interplay of visual messages within the "Cheers" programming is referred to as intertextuality, or the relation of one text to another to express an idea. Two basic types of intertextuality--horizontal and vertical--serve as a framework for this analysis of "Cheers." Horizontal textuality refers to relations between primary texts "along the axis of genre and content." In "Cheers," genre intertextuality means examining how the show works as a situation comedy, and in particular how it differs from other situation comedies. Content intertextuality refers to the use of specific allusions to other texts. The second type of intertextuality is vertical, defined as the relation between a primary text and those texts which refer to and discuss the primary texts. In the case of "Cheers," this includes analyses in the popular press. These secondary texts work to promote the circulation of selected meanings of,the primary text.
