Health and Safety Protocols Dormitory In response to COVID-19, certain protocols must be in place in order to be prepared to reopen ISD. These protocols are based on the current science and recommendations from the CDC, the Iowa Department of Education, The Journal of American Pediatrics, and the Iowa Department of Public Health. The guidelines will apply for the Fall 2020 trimester and will be re-examined for the second and third trimesters. Physical distancing ● Students will be placed in small groups on each floor and will not mingle with students from other floors ● During field trips or off campus activities where travel is necessary, masks are required while in the vehicles and if physical distancing cannot be maintained * ● Groups may be together for outside activities/games maintaining physical distancing ○ No mixing of age groups unless physical distancing can be maintained ● Small groups and physical distancing in dorm lobbies (no more than 10 people in a lobby at one time) ● One staff member purchases supplies/food as needed for dormitory activities * ● While utilizing the study lab, students will maintain physical distancing and wear face masks ○ No more than 10 people in the study lab at one time ● Students will not be allowed in other student’s rooms ● Limit the number of students in the bathrooms/showers at one time to maintain physical distancing ○ Student/staff will disinfect sinks/shower areas after use ● Common areas will not contain more than 10 people at one time ● Students/staff should remain in their general areas and use the closest doors for entering and exiting the building ● Breakfast and supper will be provided in the dormitories * ● Staff will do temperature checks each morning (using Thermoscan no-touch thermometers) Health Center Protocol ● Students medications will be scheduled so no more than 2 students go to the HC at one time ○ Medication schedules need to be strictly observed to avoid crossover of students ● For minor injuries, dorm staff will contact the nurse on duty for direction before sending the student to the Health Center ○ If directed by the nurse, using the ISD cell phone, staff will take a picture of the injury and text it to the Health Center cell phone ● Ill students – dorm staff will contact the nurse before sending the student to the Health Center ○ The nurse will contact dorm staff to delay sending a student for medication if assessing an ill student in the Health Center Face Coverings: ● Staff and students are to wear face masks when: ○ Indoors ○ Students are not required to wear a face mask when in their room alone ○ Outdoors when physical distancing cannot be maintained ○ Face masks can be surgical or cloth i. Cloth face masks from home are allowed ○ Non-disposable face shields will need to be cleaned and disinfected at the end of each shift Protocol for Ill Students When assessing students in the dormitory, the following procedures should be followed: ● Temperature checks using a thermoscan thermometer will be done prior to leaving the dormitory in the morning ○ If the student has a temperature of 99.9 or above, contact the Health Center for further direction ○ If the student has other complaints of illness, contact the Health Center for further direction ● Students and staff will access the Health Center through the west doors ○ Girls dormitory students and staff can also use the south stairwell in the girls’ dormitory .
