The Fall – United Kingdom Starring Gillian Anderson (the legendary Agent Scully from The X Files) and Jamie Dornan (from Shadows in the Sun and Fifty Shades of Grey), The Fall is a British production filmed and set in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Kay Adams-Corleone – The Godfather Played by the talented and stunning Diane Keaton in Francis Ford Coppola’s trilogy of films based on the novel, Kay Adams-Corleone is the wife of mafia boss Michael Corleone. When Pierre Boulle was captured and subjected to forced labor, he never thought that was going to be the start of a fruitful career as a writer to eventually become one of the world’s most famous men in history of cinema – and sadly, one of the forgotten names in recent years.

Born in Avignon, France, Pierre Boulle studied at the prestigious École supérieure d’électricité (Supélec) where he received an engineer’s degree in 1933. He then went to discover and enjoy a different world from the one he knew when an adventure in the Malay Peninsula was offered, where he worked as a technician on British rubber plantations until 1939.

While in Southeastern Asia, Boulle also worked as a secret agent under the name Peter John Rule and helped the French resistance movement in China, Burma, and French Indochina during WWII. In 1943, he was captured by Vichy France loyalists on the Mekong River and was subjected to severe hardship and forced labor. These war experiences helped him to construct his first great book and also his first novel adapted in Hollywood: The Bridge over the River Kwai.

The movie became an icon of British cinema after David Lean made the book into a motion picture that won seven 1957 Oscars, including the Best Picture, and Best Actor for an outstanding Alec Guinness. Boulle won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay despite not having written the screenplay because the original screenwriters had been blacklisted as communist sympathizers.

His experiences during the war, as a spy and as a prisoner led Boulle “to a point about the relativity of good and evil, which is the theme of all his works. What is good is good only in a certain context. Not necessarily universally,” said to the BBC Jean Loriot, who heads the Association of Friends of Pierre Boulle, while describing Boulle’s work.

His other famous novel adapted to cinema –- with even more version than The Bridge over the River Kwai, was The Planet of the Apes.
