The Effects of Sexualized and Violent Presentations of Women in Combat Sport
Journal of Sport Management, 2017, 31, 533-545 https://doi.org/10.1123/jsm.2016-0333 © 2017 Human Kinetics, Inc. ARTICLE The Effects of Sexualized and Violent Presentations of Women in Combat Sport T. Christopher Greenwell University of Louisville Jason M. Simmons University of Cincinnati Meg Hancock and Megan Shreffler University of Louisville Dustin Thorn Xavier University This study utilizes an experimental design to investigate how different presentations (sexualized, neutral, and combat) of female athletes competing in a combat sport such as mixed martial arts, a sport defying traditional gender norms, affect consumers’ attitudes toward the advertising, event, and athlete brand. When the female athlete in the advertisement was in a sexualized presentation, male subjects reported higher attitudes toward the advertisement and the event than the female subjects. Female respondents preferred neutral presentations significantly more than the male respondents. On the one hand, both male and female respondents felt the fighter in the sexualized ad was more attractive and charming than the fighter in the neutral or combat ads and more personable than the fighter in the combat ads. On the other hand, respondents felt the fighter in the sexualized ad was less talented, less successful, and less tough than the fighter in the neutral or combat ads and less wholesome than the fighter in the neutral ad. The Hand-Book to Boxing;
FACSIMILE REPRODUCTION NOTES: This document is an attempt at a faithful transcription of the original document. Special effort has been made to ensure that original spelling (this includes what may be typographical errors such as the 1776 reference on pp29 which should, apparently, be 1766 or pp39 where June 10 appears twice and should, at a guess, be July 10 in the second appearance, and, my favorite, July 40, on pp46), line-breaks, and vocabulary are left intact, and when possible, similar fonts have been used. However, it contains original formatting and image scans. All rights are reserved except those specifically granted herein. Of particular note in this reproduction is the unusual (by today’s standards) selection of page and font size. The page size is, in the original 6” x 10” with a font approximately 9 point for large portions of the book. Reproducing it in 6x9 with smaller top and bottom margins with hand tweaked font, paragraph, and line spacings, I have tried to recaptured the original personality of the book. However, this can make it difficult to read. Be assured that this was maintained in order to keep the “flavor” of the original text but it can be taxing on the eyes. Taking the Fight to Digital Platforms FITE TV aims to make ring-sports programming mobile5/09/2016 8:00 AM Eastern By: R. Thomas Umstead While most televised professional and college sports games can be watched online on multiple devices, a good number of major pay-per-view ring-sports events have yet to enter the digital arena. FITE TV is trying to change that. The mobile app, developed by digital media company Flipps Media, currently offers live boxing events, as well as pro wrestling and mixed martial arts content, streamed to mobile phones. The app is available via iTunes or Google Play and gives users the option of watching on their devices or connecting directly to a smart TV. Through distribution deals with such event providers as Golden Boy Promotions (boxing), TNA (pro wrestling) and World Series of Fighting (MMA), FITE TV is streaming an average of eight live free and fee-based ring sports events per week. FITE TV CEO Kosta Jordanov recently spoke to Multichannel News programming editor R. Thomas Umstead about the service, as well as his aspirations to eventually offer fight fans the opportunity to watch the biggest PPV ring-sports events online. An edited excerpt of their conversation follows. RELATED: Spring's Live Ring Sports on Cable and Broadcast MCN: Do people actually want to watch a fight on a mobile phone? Kosta Jordanov: It depends on the content. The trend is that people are shifting to short-form clips, and for those people who watch that content, the size of the screen doesn’t matter that much. -

ENGAGING WOMEN AND GIRLS IN MMA GENERAL AWARENESS COVERING THEORETICAL ISSUES, IMPLICATIONS AND PRACTICE TO ENGAGING WOMEN AND GIRLS AT THE GRASS ROOTS LEVEL OF MIXED MARTIAL ARTS Jorden Curran, November 2020 AWARENESS TOWARDS ENGAGING WOMEN AND GIRLS IN MMA Publication date: November 2020 This information (not including logos or images) may be used free of charge. This document is available for download at www.immaf.org. Enquires regarding this document can be sent to [email protected] and/or [email protected]. The purpose of the document is to offer direction and awareness for members of the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF), towards theoretical issues, barriers and practice of engaging women and girls in the sport of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). INTRODUCTION Since its launch in 2020, the IMMAF Women’s Commission, led by Hayzia Bellem, has assisted IMMAF member nations in the creation of National Women’s Commissions, worldwide. The aim of the IMMAF Women’s Commission is to give guidance to every country in auditing the situation locally and to define what actions to take to develop MMA for women and girls at every level. At its upper professional level, the sport Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a world leader in its representation of gender equality. Pioneering stars of past and present such as Gina Carano, Ronda Rousey, Holly Holm, Cristiane Justino, Amanda Nunes, Valentina Schevchenko, Joanna Jędrzejczyk, Weili Zhang and Rose Namajunas have proved that unlike many of the world’s most prominent sports, women in MMA are able to achieve equal prominence and opportunity in line with that of their male counterparts. -
Lacing up the Gloves: Women, Boxing and Modernity Irene Gammel Ryerson University, Toronto
Lacing Up the Gloves: Women, Boxing and Modernity Irene Gammel Ryerson University, Toronto Abstract This article explores women’s early twentieth-century engagement with boxing as a means of expressing the fragmentations and contradictions of modern life. Equally drawn to and repelled by the visceral agonism of the sport, female artists and writers of the First World War and post- war era appropriated the boxer’s virile body in written and visual autobiographies, effectively breaching male territory and anticipating contemporary notions of female autonomy and self- realization. Whether by reversing the gaze of desire as a ringside spectator or inhabiting the physical sublime of boxing itself, artists such as Djuna Barnes, Vicki Baum, Mina Loy and Clara Bow enlisted the tropes, metaphors and physicality of boxing to fashion a new understanding of their evolving status and identity within a changing social milieu. At the same time, their corporeal and textual self-inscriptions were used to stage their own exclusion from the sport and the realm of male agency and power. Ultimately, while modernist women employ boxing to signal a radical break with the past, or a reinvention of self, they also use it to stage the violence and trauma of the era, aware of limits and vulnerabilities. Keywords: boxing, women, modernity, self-representation, gender 1 Lacing Up the Gloves: Women, Boxing and Modernity No man, even if he had earlier been the biggest Don Juan, still risks it in this day and age to approach a lady on the street. The reason: the woman is beginning to box! - German boxing promoter Walter Rothenburg, 19211 Following Spinoza, the body is regarded as neither a locus for a consciousness nor an organically determined entity; it is understood more in terms of what it can do, the things it can perform, the linkages it establishes, the transformations and becomings it undergoes, and the machinic connections it forms with other bodies, what it can link with, how it can proliferate its other capacities – a rare, affirmative understanding of the body. -
Inertial Sensors for Performance Analysis in Combat Sports: a Systematic Review
sports Article Inertial Sensors for Performance Analysis in Combat Sports: A Systematic Review Matthew TO Worsey , Hugo G Espinosa * , Jonathan B Shepherd and David V Thiel School of Engineering and Built Environment, Griffith University, Brisbane, QLD 4111, Australia; matthew.worsey@griffithuni.edu.au (M.T.O.W.); j.shepherd@griffith.edu.au (J.B.S.); d.thiel@griffith.edu.au (D.V.T.) * Correspondence: h.espinosa@griffith.edu.au; Tel.: +61-7-3735-8432 Received: 5 December 2018; Accepted: 18 January 2019; Published: 21 January 2019 Abstract: The integration of technology into training and competition sport settings is becoming more commonplace. Inertial sensors are one technology being used for performance monitoring. Within combat sports, there is an emerging trend to use this type of technology; however, the use and selection of this technology for combat sports has not been reviewed. To address this gap, a systematic literature review for combat sport athlete performance analysis was conducted. A total of 36 records were included for review, demonstrating that inertial measurements were predominately used for measuring strike quality. The methodology for both selecting and implementing technology appeared ad-hoc, with no guidelines for appropriately analysing the results. This review summarises a framework of best practice for selecting and implementing inertial sensor technology for evaluating combat sport performance. It is envisaged that this review will act as a guide for future research into applying technology to combat sport. Keywords: combat sport; technology; inertial sensor; performance 1. Introduction In recent years, technological developments have resulted in the production of small, unobtrusive wearable inertial sensors. -
