Financial support was received from English Heritage, Heritage Marketing and Publication and UCL Institute of Archaeology. !e editors would like to thank everyone involved in the planning and execution of the conference. We are particularly grateful to the speakers and audience for attending a conference which not only coincided with the hottest weekend of the year, but with the opening England game of the 2006 World Cup. CONTRIBUTORS Susannah Baldry, Charlotte Burrill, Martin Hatton and Hilary Snelling were for many years volunteer members of the SHARP human remains team. Tr u d i e C o l e is the Learning and Access Manager at Poole Museum, Borough of Poole and a PhD student at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. She has worked in the field of public archaeology for ten years and is particularly interested in using archaeology within formal learning settings. Trudie is also a leader for the Poole branch of the Young Archaeologists Club. Don Cooper is chairman of Hendon and District Archaeological Society and vice- chair of CBA London. Sarah Dhanjal is a postgraduate research student at UCL, looking at the role of archaeology in Southall, West London. She was the recipient of the 2009 CBA Marsh Award for her outstanding work in the field of community archaeology and education. Sean Hawken worked for Exeter University on the Community Landscape Project (CLP) and the Exploring Archaeology (XArch) project. Don Henson, is a freelance heritage education specialist, and was Head of Education at the Council for British Archaeology for 17 years. He is also Director of the Centre for Audio–Visual Study and Practice in Archaeology at University College London, and a member of the National Trust Learning Panel. He also likes real ale and chocolate. Justin Hughes is a Project Officer for Worcestershire Historic Environment Archaeology Service. Rob Isherwood is an independent community and educational archaeologist working in the North West of England (Community Archaeology North West). He gained a PhD from the University of Manchester in 2009. His thesis was entitled ‘Community Archaeology. A study of the conceptual, political and practical issues surrounding community archaeology in the United Kingdom today.’ John Knowles was Widening Participation Coordinator at the University of Lincoln, leaving in 2006 to do freelance work with Aimhigher schools. A keen amateur archaeologist, he has involved school children in survey work and excavations. viii Contributors Helene McNeill is an archaeologist, independent researcher and software developer living in France. Gabriel Moshenska is a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Research Fellow at UCL Institute of Archaeology working on the history of public archaeology. He is assistant editor of the journal Public Archaeology. Hilary Orange has taught archaeology in adult and further education and has also worked on community archaeology projects. She has an MA in Public Archaeology from UCL (2006). Her general research interests include archaeology and education, public archaeology, industrial heritage and archaeologies of the recent past. Patricia Reid is Honorary Archaeologist for the Faversham Society and project leader of the Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group. Faye Simpson is a lecturer in archaeology at Manchester Metropolitan University. Suzie !omas is the Community Archaeology Support Officer for the Council for British Archaeology. For her PhD, which was researched at the International Centre for Cultural and Heritage Studies, Newcastle University, she looked at the relationships between archaeologists and metal-detector users in England and Wales. Christopher John Tripp is a community archaeologist who has worked with schools, local authorities, television and museums. 1 INTRODUCTION: THINKING ABOUT, TALKING ABOUT, AND DOING COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGY Gabriel Moshenska and Sarah Dhanjal What is community archaeology? At the end of the Archaeology in the Community conference we were no clearer, and by the end of this book we don’t imagine you will be either. And that is as it should be. To define community archaeology – narrowly or broadly – serves little useful purpose at this point, and if this book demonstrates one thing it is the rich diversity of activities and initiatives taking place under this convenient banner. A few common threads have emerged, such as cooperation between professional and non-professional archaeologists, and the belief that archaeology does not have to take place in private between consenting companies. !at there is no obvious need to define community archaeology does not mean that it should not be studied, and there have been a number of studies in recent years that have sought to assess the values and validity of community archaeology initiatives (e.g. Simpson and Williams 2008; Simpson 2010; Tully 2007). !ese are signs of maturity and critical reflection on our practices, but intellectual ruminations should not perhaps be taken to the extreme of turning community archaeology into a principally academic subject – this would be contrary to the spirit of pluralism and openness that characterizes so many of the papers in this volume (and see Moshenska 2008). One of the issues in doing or talking about community archaeology is the nebulous nature of the term ‘community’ (the problems of the word ‘archaeology’ are much more fundamental, and best saved for another time). Community is a sociological term, a buzzword, and a political strategy. Private Eye has long satirized the habit of journalists and politicians defining and creating ‘communities’ as diverse as the transport user community and the outdoor sex community. More seriously, communities can be defined by themselves or from outside. !ey can be based on locale, class, interests, ethnicity, hobbies, language, sexuality and any number or combination of other factors. !ey exist as sets and sub-sets of humanity, defined for a range of purposes, many of them deleterious to the group

    THE VIKINGS IN ORKNEY James Graham-Campbell Introduction In recent years, it has been suggested that the first permanent Scandinavian presence in Orkney was not the result of forcible land-taking by Vikings, but came about instead through gradual penetration - a period which has been described as one of'informal' settlement (Morris 1985: 213; 1998: 83). Such would have involved a phase of co-existence, or even integration, between the native Picts and the earliest Norse settlers. This initial period, it is supposed, was then followed by 'a second, formal, settlement associated with the estab­ lishment of an earldom' (Morris 1998: 83 ), in the late 9'h century. The archaeological evidence advanced in support of the first 'period of overlap' is, however, open to alternative interpretation and, indeed, Alfred Smyth has com­ mented ( 1984: 145), in relation to the annalistic records of the earliest Viking attacks on Ireland, that these 'strongly suggest that the Norwegians did not gradually infiltrate the Northern Isles as farmers and fisherman and then sud­ denly tum nasty against their neighbours'. Others have supposed that the first phase of Norse settlement in Orkney would have involved, in the words of Buteux (1997: 263): 'ness-taking' (the fortifying of a headland by means of a cross-dyke) and the occupation of small off-shore islands. Crawford ( 1987: 46) argues that headland dykes on Orkney can be interpreted as indicating ness-taking. However many are equally likely to be prehistoric land boundaries, and no bases on either headlands or small islands have yet been positively identified. Buteux continues his discussion by observing, most pertinently, that: While this can not be taken as suggesting that such sites do not remain to be uncovered, the striking fact is that almost all identified Viking-period settlements in the Northern Isles are found overlying or immediately adjacent to sites which were occupied in the preceding Pictish period and which, furthermore, had frequently been settlements of some size and importance.

His determination to make archaeology publicly accessible was realised through his teaching, work on Time Team, and advocating community projects. The Mick Aston Archaeology Fund is therefore intended to encourage voluntary effort in making original contributions to the study and care of the historic environment. Please note that the Mick Aston Archaeology Fund is currently open to applicants carrying out work in England and Wales only. Historic Scotland run a similar scheme for projects in Scotland and details can be found at: http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/index/heritage/grants/grants-voluntary-sector- funding.htm. How does the Mick Aston Archaeology Fund work? Voluntary groups and societies, but also individuals, are challenged to put forward proposals for innovative projects that will say something new about the history and archaeology of local surroundings, and thus inform their future care. Proposals will be judged by a panel on their intrinsic quality, and evidence of capacity to see them through successfully. What is the Mick Aston Archaeology Fund panel looking for? First and foremost, the panel is looking for original research. Awards can be to support new work, or to support the completion of research already in progress, for example by paying for a specific piece of analysis or equipment. Projects which work with young people or encourage their participation are especially encouraged. What can funding be used for? In principle, almost anything that is directly related to the actual undertaking of a project.

They came together to do what people do at reunions - to renew old friendships, to reminisce, to laugh, to look at old photos of them­ selves when they were younger, to sing "inside" songs, to get dressed up for a reception and to have a banquet with a speaker. In this case, the speaker was General William Westmoreland, and before the banquet, in the afternoon, the group had gone to Arlington National Cemetery to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. They represented 1,600 women who had served (some in the 50's, some in the 60's and some in the 70's) in an American Red Cross program which provided recreation for U.S. servicemen on duty in Europe, Korea and Vietnam. It was named Supplemental Recreational Activities Overseas (SRAO). In Europe it was known as the Red Cross center program. In Korea and Vietnam it was Red Cross clubmobile service.

    NEWSLETTER 141 Summer/Autumn 2017 GLOSARCH FIELDWORK Pittville Park by James Hodsdon In preparation for helping Cheltenham Borough Council draw up proposals for improving the surroundings of the Pump Room, the Friends of Pittville (FoP), a local amenity group, wanted to establish what if anything remained of the short flight of steps which once terminated the broad walk which until the 1890s ran up towards the Pump Room from the Upper Lake. The steps are visible on maps and postcards up to about 1900. The two plinths which bookended the steps are still there but now appear rather insignificant because the ground level has been built up over the years. The solution was to do some practical archaeology, and at 9 a.m. on 20 April several FoP members took a break from normal Thursday park duties. Under the supervision of Gloucestershire Archaeology experts Les Comtesse, Terry Moore-Scott and Nigel Spry, and with CBC in attendance, three test pits were opened, each roughly 1.5m sq, one each next to the east and west plinths, and one half way between. Because of the dry weather, the soil under the turf proved hard going, and we were over two hours in before any intelligible features came to light (not counting bottle caps, old lighters, confetti, etc). It was pretty clear that the stone steps themselves had gone – very probably between 1891, when we know the broad walk was turfed over, and 1900 when the bandstand was placed centrally between the plinths (a short-lived Bad Idea, corrected when the bandstand was shifted to its present location a year later).

PREFACE WHEN, in the year 1854, I was arranging the scheme for the ‘Handbook of Architecture,’ one chapter of about fifty pages was allotted to the Rude Stone Monuments then known. When, however, I came seriously to consult the authorities I had marked out, and to arrange my ideas preparatory to writing it, I found the whole subject in such a state of confusion and uncertainty as to be wholly unsuited for introduction into a work, the main object of which was to give a clear but succinct account of what was known and admitted with regard to the architectural styles of the world. Again, ten years afterwards, while engaged in re-writing this ‘Handbook’ as a History of Architecture,’ the same difficulties presented themselves. It is true that in the interval the Druids, with their Dracontia, had lost much of the hold they possessed on the mind of the public; but, to a great extent, they had been replaced by prehistoric myths, which, though free from their absurdity, were hardly less perplexing. The consequence was that then, as in the first instance, it would have been necessary to argue every point and defend every position. Nothing could be taken for granted, and no narrative was possible, the matter was, therefore, a second time allowed quietly to drop without being noticed.

Im Norden Frankreichs gerät er während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in deutsche Kriegsgefangenschaft und wird am 10. November 1940, nachdem er aus seinem ersten Gefängnis im bayerischen Schloss Laufen ausgebrochen war, ins sächsische Colditz verlegt. Das malerische Schloss mit seinen weißen Giebeln diente von Herbst 1939 bis zur Befreiung 1945 unter der Bezeichnung „Oflag IV-C“ als Sonderkriegsgefangenenlager für alliierte Offiziere. Besonders aufgrund vieler spektakulärer Ausbrüche und Ausbruchsversuche erlangte das Schloss Colditz internationale Bekanntheit. Das Fluchtmuseum im Beamtenhaus macht mit einer Ausstellung die abenteuerlichen Fluchtversuche der alliierten Offiziere erlebbar. Renaissanceschloss Colditz – Eine wechselhafte Geschichte Mit seiner fast 1000-jährigen Geschichte blickt das Schloss Colditz auf bewegte Zeiten zurück. Die erste geschichtliche Erwähnung eines „Burgwards“ in Colditz lässt sich auf das Jahr 1046 datieren. Eine interessante Tatsache: erst um 1200 entstand rund um den Markt die eigentliche Stadt Colditz. Somit thronte die Burganlage schon knapp 150 Jahre früher über dem heutigen Stadtgebiet. Seine erste Blütezeit erlebte Colditz als Jagdschloss unter dem kunstsinnigen und welterfahrenen sächsischen Kurfürsten Friedrich dem Weisen (1486–1525). Nach einem von dem Bäckergesellen Clemens Bock verursachten Brand 1504, der weite Teile der Stadt, das Rathaus, die Kirche und das Schloss verwüstete, wurde das Schloss nach 1506 und besonders um 1520 im Stil der frühen Renaissance umgebaut, umfassend erweitert und neu ausgestattet.
