2017 Mason-Rice Raffle Instructions **Raffle Tickets and Money Due Tuesday, MAY 9Th!** 2017 Mason-Rice Raffle Instructions **Raffle Tickets and Money due Tuesday, MAY 9th!** What is in this booklet? ñ Itemized descriptions of 22 numbered classroom baskets and “Taste of Newton” basket ñ A list of 29 numbered teacher/specialist outings/activities; and ñ 1 page of raffle tickets (print more if needed). Booklet also available at www.masonrice.org For which items may I buy tickets? ñ Any basket (not just your child’s classroom’s) ñ Any activities involving administrators or Specialists (e.g., Art, PE) ñ Outing with your child’s CURRENT TEACHER only How do I buy tickets? ñ ON EACH TICKET, write your child’s name and the basket or excursion number; ñ Cut each ticket INDIVIDUALLY; ñ Put tickets and $ in an envelope(cash or check payable to Mason-Rice PTO); and ñ Put the envelope in either decorated box on the raffle basket table in the foyer entrance. Please don’t put money or tickets for raffle in any PTO drawers in the foyer. ñ Price: Tickets are $2 each; $5 for 3; $25 for a sheet of 15 When and how do we find out who won? ñ Principal Harold will draw winners’ names on Friday, May 12th ñ An email will go out that Friday afternoon announcing all the winners with basket pick up instructions. ñ Teachers Outings typically occur in June. If your child wins, the teacher will be in touch close to the event with the details. Where does the money go? How is this year different? ñ Your donations fund PTO operating expenses including Creative Arts & Science programs, field trip bus fees, teacher and curriculum support, staff development, community events, library books and many other things. ñ This year we are allocating the revenue from tickets purchased towards a chance of winning the “Taste of Newton” basket toward expenses for crossing guard Maureen Cahoon’s retirement party.     LEGO® Friends and Gendered Play LEGO® Friends stands as one of the LEGO Group’s most successful themes to date. The construction toys theme was designed primarily for girls and introduced in 2012. Today it includes more than 250 sets, a range of books, an animated series, and even a video game. But more than a decade before the theme was launched, the LEGO Group created a different sort of LEGO Friends. The 1999 LEGO Friends computer game was created as a sort of experiment, the byproduct of research conducted by Elena Catón in 1997 for the LEGO Group into some concerns the company had about the demographics of its toys. Catón said the goal of her research was twofold. “First, it was to bridge the gap with the girls’ market because research shows that whereas the LEGO brand was very much used by boys and girls up to the age of eight, from eight onwards boys continued to be involved with the LEGO brand, whereas girls dropped off completely and disassociated from it,” she said in a recent episode of LEGO podcast Bits N’ Bricks. “The second aspect was that the LEGO Group was conscious that in the mid to late ‘90s the computer games market was widening and taking up a lot of playtime that was not being used in with LEGO bricks.” So, Catón looked into how girls over the age of eight related to software and video games and then used that research to help produce a game that focused on things like creative collaboration and communication, she said.
