YOUNGBLOOD According to Elias Sports Bureau, with Connor Brown and Mitch Marner scoring goals the club’s first two goals on Oct. 15, 2016, the Maple Leafs became the first team in the expansion era (since 1967-68) to have rookies (Matthews, Brown, Marner) combine for each of their first six goals in a season. Via Elias Sports Bureau, Mitch Marner became the fourth teenager to record three assists in a game for the Maple Leafs on Oct. 27, 2016 vs. Florida. The other three players to accomplish the feat were Gaye Stewart (1942-43), Ted Kennedy (1943-44) and Al Iafrate (2x in 1985-86). Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are the first pair of teenagers to notch multi-goal games for the Maple Leafs in the same season since 1986–87, when Wendel Clark had a four-goal game and Vincent Damphousse had a pair of two-goal games. On Nov. 5, 2016, five Maple Leafs rookies each posted at least one point in a game for the first time since Dec. 18, 1982 vs CHI, per Elias Sports Bureau. With Connor Brown’s two-goal performance on Nov. 17 vs. Florida, the Maple Leafs have multi-goal games from four rookies (Connor Brown, Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews and William Nylander) for the first time since 1982-83 (Walt Poddubny, Peter Ihnacak, Dan Daoust, Frank Nigro), according to Elias Sports Bureau. Auston Matthews set a single-season record for a Maple Leafs rookie with his ninth first goal of the game on Dec. 29 at Tampa Bay. On Jan. 1, Auston Matthews scored his 20th goal of the season in his 36th game. Only two other players who made their NHL debut since 1993 reached the 20-goal mark no more than 36 games into their career: Alex Ovechkin in his 33rd game, and Petr Prucha in his 36th game, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Via Elias Sports Bureau, Auston Matthews also became the third Maple Leafs rookie (Ace Bailey, Feb. 22, 1927; Steve Thomas, Nov. 30, 1985) to produce a multi-goal game including a game-winning overtime goal, in regular-season play. Toronto rookies have combined for 161 points (60 goals, 101 assists) in 41 games this season.
