A total of 32 transect counts were per- formed. Habitats sampled included sandy bottom, rocky boulders, vertical walls and rocky outcrops. Species richness, diversity, density, trophic structure, size and spatial organization were documented for the fish assemblages. Forty-four species from 23 families were encountered; 32% belonged to Sparidae (10) and Labridae (four). The greatest species richness (25) was observed in rocky boulder habitat at 10–15 m depth, while the lowest (five) occurred over a deeper sand habitat. The greatest density (760Á5 individuals per 100 m2) was recorded over rocky outcropping (20–25 m deep), and the lowest of 11Á6 individuals per 100 m2 was over a sand bottom at 10–15 m depth. Thalassoma pavo, Abudefduf luridus and Chromis limbata had higher densities on hard bottoms, while Heteroconger longissimus was the most abundant species in sand bottom habitats. -

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Two acanthocephalan species (Neoechinorhynchus agilis in Liza aurata; Acanthocephaloides irregularis in Scorpaena porcus) and 4 nematode species (Hysterothylacium aduncum in Merlangius merlangus euxinus, Trachurus mediterraneus, Engraulis encrasicholus, Belone belone, Caspialosa sp., Sciaena umbra, Scorpaena porcus, Liza aurata, Spicara smaris, Gobius niger, Sarda sarda, Uranoscopus scaber, and Mullus barbatus; Anisakis pegreffii in Trachurus mediterraneus; Philometra globiceps in Uranoscopus scaber and Trachurus mediterraneus; and Ascarophis sp. in Scorpaena porcus) were found in the intestines of their hosts. E-mail: [email protected]. SUMMARY: Mycteroperca fusca is one of the main predators of the Canarian archipelago coastal marine ecosystem. Noth- ing is known on the life history or population dynamics of this predatory serranid fish. In this study, age and growth of M. fusca were investigated by annual growth increment counts from 214 fish collected between January 2004 and December 2005. A year’s growth is represented by one opaque and one translucent ring. The island grouper is a slow-growing and long-lived species, with ages up to twenty years recorded. Length at age was described by the von Bertalanffy growth -1 model (L∞=898 mm; k=0.062 year ; and t0= −3.83 year), the Schnute growth model (y1=262 mm; y2=707 mm; a=0.008; -1 and b=1.98), and the seasonalised von Bertalanffy growth model (L∞=908 mm; k=0.061 year ; t0= −3.83 year; C=2.58; and ts=0.542). Males and females show differences in growth. Keywords: Mycteroperca fusca, grouper, age, growth, otoliths. This process aims to achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES) through the elaborated 11 Ecological Objectives and their respective common indicators. Since 2008, Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention have adopted the EcAp and agreed on a roadmap for its implementation. First phases of the EcAp process led to the accomplishment of 5 steps of the scheduled 7-steps process such as: 1) Definition of an Ecological Vision for the Mediterranean; 2) Setting common Mediterranean strategic goals; 3) Identification of an important ecosystem properties and assessment of ecological status and pressures; 4) Development of a set of ecological objectives corresponding to the Vision and strategic goals; and 5) Derivation of operational objectives with indicators and target levels. -

July 2015, 69 pp. 2 Executive Summary On July 15, 2013, NMFS received a petition to list 81 species of marine organisms as endangered or threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). If an ESA petition is found to present substantial scientific or commercial information that the petitioned action may be warranted, a status review shall be promptly commenced (16 U.S.C. 1533(b)(3)(A)). NMFS determined that for 27 of the 81 species, including the island grouper (Mycteroperca fusca), the petition had sufficient merit for consideration and that a status review was warranted (79 FR 10104, February 24, 2014). -

Three gastrocotylid genera share similar morphology and anatomy but are distinguished by this character: Pseudaxine Parona & Perugia, 1890 has no vagina, Allogastrocotyle Nasir & Fuentes Zambrano, 1983 has two vaginae, and Pseudaxinoides Lebedev, 1968 has multiple vaginae. In the course of a study of Pseudaxine trachuri Parona & Perugia 1890, we found specimens with structures resembling “multiple vaginae”; we compared them with specimens without vaginae in terms of both morphology and molecular characterisitics (COI barcode), and found that they belonged to the same species. -

Introduction This review provides a summary of the parasites, pathogens and contaminant related impacts on deep sea fish normally found at depths greater than about 200m There is a clear focus on worldwide commercial species but has an emphasis on records and reports from the north east Atlantic. In particular, the focus of species following discussion were as follows: deep-water squalid sharks (e.g. Centrophorus squamosus and Centroscymnus coelolepis), black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo) (except in ICES area IX – fielded by Portuguese), roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), blue ling (Molva dypterygia), torsk (Brosme brosme), greater silver smelt (Argentina silus), Greenland halibut (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides), deep-sea redfish (Sebastes mentella), alfonsino (Beryx spp.), red blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo). However, it should be noted that in some cases no disease or contaminant data exists for these species. -

Workshop for Red List Assessments of Groupers
Workshop for Global Red List Assessments of Groupers Family Serranidae; subfamily Epinephelinae FINAL REPORT April 30th, 2007 Prepared by Yvonne Sadovy Chair, Groupers & Wrasses Specialist Group The University of Hong Kong (24 pages) Introduction The groupers (Family Serranidae; Subfamily Epinephelinae) comprise about 160 species globally in the tropics and sub-tropics. Many groupers are commercially important and assessments to date on a subset of species suggest that the group might be particularly vulnerable to fishing. An assessment of all grouper species is needed to examine the sub- family as a whole and set conservation and management priorities as indicated. The Serranidae is also a priority family for the Global Marine Species Assessment. This report summarizes the outcomes of the first complete red listing assessment for groupers conducted by the Groupers and Wrasses IUCN Specialist Group (GWSG) at a workshop in Hong Kong. The Workshop for Global Red List Assessments of Groupers took place 7-11 February, 2007, at the Robert Black College of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). The 5-day workshop was designed to complete red list assessments for all grouper species. Of a total of 161 grouper species globally, only 22 are included on the IUCN Red List with a currently valid assessment; several need to be reassessed and the remaining 100+ have never been assessed. The aim of the workshop, therefore, was to assess 139 groupers to complete all 161 species. The workshop had 23 participants, including many highly respected grouper experts, coming from eleven countries (see cover photo of participants). All members of the GWSG were invited in circulation.
