The main research topics are gasification of biomass, waste products and black liquor, combustion in fluidized beds and drying technology. Another recent topic is system studies from a national perspective to investigate the long term impact of various factors relevant to the industry like recycled paper and COa-mitigation. ♦ VARMEFORSK Sammanfattning AF sammanstallde 1997 en rapport om laget betraffande skogsindustriell energi forskning pa uppdrag av Varmeforsks Skogsindustriella grapp. Foreliggande studie ar en uppdatering av delta arbete for samma uppdragsgivare. Rapportens syfte ar att ge en oversikt av det radande laget pa forskningsomradet i dagslaget samt att forsoka bedoma uppnadda resultat och ge fbrslag for framtida atgarder. Styrgrupp for arbetet bar varit Varmeforsks skogsindustriella kommitte med Rolf Edlund, StoraEnso Technical Support, som ordforande. Statusrapporten omfattar de energiprojekt med inriktning mot skogsindustriella ffagor vid svenska och finska institutioner, hogskolor och industriforetag som pagick respektive som avrapporterats inom perioden 1996-2000. Ett 50 tal olika program och projekt redovisas i referatform. Vidare ges en oversikt av inom vilka processomraden (tex torkning, svartlutforgasning) fbrskningen bedrivs. Baserat pa derma analys ger AF-IPK exempel pa omraden som enligt var bedomning ar angelagna att satsa pa. De mest betydelsefulla ar, utan inbordes ganordning: □ Svartlutsfbrgasning □ Syntesarbete (exempelvis rorande forbrannings- och forgasningsforskning) a Sekundarvarme och processintegration a Slamtorkning och forbranning (inklusive bantering av rester fran upparbetning av returfiber) AF-IPK AB Teknik - Strategiska Studier Hans Norrstrom Mikael Ahlroth vA rmeforsk Summary AF summarized the status of the energy research relevant to the forest industry in 1997 on behalf of the Forest Industry Group, a subdivision of Varmeforsk (a Swedish organization committed to energy research). The report at hand is an update to that report and is also ordered by the Forest Industry Group. The purpose of this report is to give an overview of the situation in the research area today. Another purposeis to try to assess the results obtained so far and propose future action. The work has been supervised by Varmeforsk ’s Forest Industrial Committee with Rolf Edlund, StoraEnso Technical Support, as chairman. The status report covers ongoing and initiated energy projects with forest industrial relevance at Swedish and Finnish institutes universities and companies between 1996 and 2000. Around 50 research programs and projects are described briefly. Furthermore, an overview of the process areas in which the research is conducted is given. Examples arc, for instance, black liquor gasification and drying technology. Based on this analysis, AF-IPK gives examples of research areas that, according to our assessment, are qualified for further support. Fran AF:s sida bar Hans Norrstrom varit ansvarig for arbetet. Mikael Ahlroth och Mats Nordgren bar ansvarat for faktainsamlig, bearbetning och sammanstallning av rapporten. AF vill i detta sammanhang rikta ett varmt tack till alia dem vid forskningsinstitut, universitetsinstitutioner och foretag som lamnat de uppgifter som bildar kaman i rapporten. Vi vill vidare rikta ett varmt tack till styrgruppen som med stort intresse och sakkunskap left arbetet. 1 VARMEFORSK 2 Energiforskning 2.1 Forskningsomrdden och aktorer Energiforskning ar ett synnerligen omfattande Sit och innefattar allt ftan elanvandning i lokaler, ventilation, star- och smaskalig biobransleeldning till artificiell fotosyntes. For att denna studie inte skall bh alltfbr omfattande och svardverskadlig och for att ge en sann bild av den forskning som ar relevant for skogsindustrin, bar vissa forsknings-omraden forbigatts och bedomts som inte relevanta for denna studie. Denna indelning satter ocksa vissa andra randvillkor pa forskningen. Foljande indelning bar gjorts: 1. Direkt energiforskning. Detta innefattar forskning om fdrbranning i fluidiserad badd av biobransle eller skogsindustriella avfallsbranslen. Forgasning av samma bransle typer ingar ocksa inom ramen for denna studie. Ett annat viktigt omrade ar forbranning av svardut och svartlutsfdigasning. Matteknik for fdrbranning av ovanstaende branslen och hogtemperaturkorrosion raknas som direkt energiforskning. Ett fjarde omrade ar sekundarvarmeatervinning och processintegradon samt torkning av papper och virke. 2. Indiiekt energiforskning. I denna kategoii ingar processforskning som inte direkt ar energirelaterad som ovan, men som bar energikonsekvenser for bruket nar resultaten implementeras. Exempel pa denna forskningstyp an modifikationer pa den kemiska massakokprocessen och altemativa kokprocesser (AQ, IDE). Forbattrad processtyming ar ocksa ett exempel pa denna forskning. No. 17 Laniidae BY CHARLES VAURIE The following notes were made during a study of the present family for a proposed check list of the Palearctic region. Nine of the 14 species that occur in this region, or some of their races, are discussed: Lanius bucephalus, L. collurio, L. senator, L. vittatus (in which a new sub- species is described), L. schach, L. tephronotus, L. minor, L. excubitor, and Tchagra senegala. I am indebted and would like to express my ap- preciation to Mr. J. C. Greenway, Jr., of the Museum of Comparative Zoology for the loan of a critical type, and to Dr. D. Amadon for reading and criticizing the manuscript. Lanius bucephalus Bangs and Peters described a new race of this species from south- western Kansu in 1928 which they called salicarius. The new race is based on a single specimen and no additional one has apparently been collected or reported since. Through the courtesy of Mr. J. C. Greenway, Jr., I have been able to examine this specimen, which is an adult female in worn plumage collected in May. It represents a very distinct race dif- fering from female nominate bucephalus of which 30 specimens were examined by being, as stated by Bangs and Peters, much more exten- sively barred below, with the individual bars broader and blacker. The other differences cited by the authors of salicarius require comment.

    94 The Migration of the European Redshanks (Tringa totanus (L.)). By FINN SALOMONSEN. (Med et dansk resume: De europæiske Rødbens (Tringa totanus (L.)) trækforhold.) The movements of the Redshank are rather well-known in Europe, where this species almost everywhere is a quite com­ mon bird. Recent ringing in Scandinavia, however, has revealed some new and interesting facts. The conclusions drawn in this paper are mainly based on the considerable number of recov­ eries of Scandinavian Redshanks. There are no less than 154 recoveries abroad of Redshanks ringed in Denmark. The cor­ responding figures for Sweden and N orway are 53 and 8, respectively. In most other countries ringing of Redshank has been carried out on a modest scale only. I am indebted to Dr. HANS JOHANSEN, Zool. Museum, Copenhagen, for giving me access to the ringing records of the Danish Redshanks not yet published, and to Dr. G. C. A. THE GENUS BUTEO Four species inhabit the Palearctic region (rufinus, hemilasius, buteo, and lagopus). Their breeding ranges are shown in figure 1, the range of lagopus extending also to northern North America. The other three are restricted to the Palearctic, as I cannot agree with Hartert (1925) or other authors that oreophilus of eastern and southern Africa and brachyurus of Madagascar are conspecific with B. buteo. In oreophilus, the dark markings on the under parts and "thighs" are more or less tear-shaped, and this pattern is quite different from that of buteo, in which the under parts are streaked, splotched, or irregularly barred. Furthermore, the two birds have dif- ferent proportions. The tail is shorter in oreophilus, about 49 per cent of the length of the wing, as against about 55 in buteo. This difference may seem slight but actually is very noticeable in comparable and well-made skins.

    Notes Alpine Swift 'playing' with piece of paper At 10.00 GMT on 20th June 1985, in sunny conditions with little wind at Les Baux, France, I watched several Alpine Swifts Apus melba with Swifts A. apus feeding 100-200 m up in the vicinity of the old village. One of the Alpine Swifts darted after what appeared to be a piece of white paper, a little larger than the head of a Swift, floating in the air; three times in a period of two minutes, it grasped the paper in its bill and flew with it for several metres, before releasing it and diving to catch it again. I can find no reference to 'play' behaviour by the Alpine Swift. JONATHAN H. MERCER Torridon, 79 Alexander Drive, Cirencester, Gloucestershire GL71UQ This appears to have been nest-collecting behaviour, or perhaps feeding behaviour by a bird which was, to judge from its repeating its mistake, 'slow to learn'. EDS Behaviour of Swallows with feather At 09.00 GMT on 8th August 1985, near Ipswich, Suffolk, I watched a juvenile Swallow Hirundo rustica swoop and catch in mid air a white object. It then dropped the object, and through binoculars I could see that it was a white feather. A second juvenile Swallow swooped and caught the feather, and flew with it for a few seconds before releasing it. The feather was then caught by a third juvenile. The whole 'game' was repeated in this fashion for about one minute, during which time each Swallow caught and released the feather about five times.

    The diversification of Portugal’s commercial relations in the late eighteenth century: between discourse and praxis. Miguel Dantas da Cruz1 Abstract The diversification of trading partners marked the context of Portugal’s economic relations with the outside world in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This had also been a frequent argument put forward in the organized discourse of Portuguese economic thought throughout the eighteenth century. Without claiming to be exhaustive, this article examines the testimonies of some of the eighteenth- century authors who reflected at greater length on the advantages of diversifying trading partners. After this, an analysis is made of some of the more distinctive manifestations of this experience, essentially related to the marked changes that took place in the shipping sector and the readjustments in the economic importance of trading partners.     MIGRATIONAL DRIFT AND THE YELLOW WAGTAIL COMPLEX BY KENNETH WILLIAMSON (Fair Isle Bird Observatory) INTRODUCTION FROM time to time grey-headed yellow wagtails which appear to be identical with Sykes's Wagtail (Motacilla flava beema) of western Siberia have been observed or captured in the British Isles. The frequency of their appearance has puzzled ornitholo­ gists and in the absence of a more satisfactory explanation of their origin they are now generally regarded as aberrant examples of the typical race, the Blue-headed Wagtail (Motacilla f. flava) of middle Europe, or even of the British Yellow Wagtail flavissima. The current view is reflected in the decision of the late British Ornithologists' Union List Sub-Committee to consider such speci­ mens as belonging to the race flava (Ibis, vol. 92, pp. 140-141) so that in consequence beema has failed to find a place in the Check­ list of birds of Great Britain and Ireland (1952). The fashion of regarding such birds as variants or mutants of flava, whilst it owes its origin to the work of Stresemann (1926), received a great impetus as a result of the policy of the Editors of The Handbook of British Birds (1941, vol 1, p. 215) and of the journal British Birds in the treatment of such records from 1935 onwards (see editorial note, antea, vol. xxix, p. 200). So far as this country is concerned, the seal of authority was placed on this theory by the writings of Harrison (1945), Tucker (1949) and Smith (1950). Stresemann's view is that mutants arise in the various yellow wagtail populations showing extraordinary con­ vergences, so that birds very like each other may be found in widely-separated breeding-areas.
