  • An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers by Julia Boyd — 105
An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers by Julia Boyd — 105 An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers Julia Boyd Media Arts and Entertainment, Concentration: Cinema Elon University Abstract This paper explored the role of Native Americans in the Hollywood film industry and their actions to estab- lish authentic representations of their population and culture in the media. Using academic literature, film analyses, and contemporary film reviews and articles, the author created a synthesis of the history of Na- tive Americans in film. The author concluded that by becoming producers, directors, and writers of their own stories, American Indians have regained control of their images and been able to combat stereotypes and the exclusion of Native Americans in the creative process. Positive social change for minority populations can be optimized when these populations are in control of their own images in film and media. I. Introduction One can use art, music, literature, television and film to trace patterns in society. Since the invention of moving images in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, film has been a particularly powerful me- dium. Films have served as escapist fantasies, allowing audiences to enter astonishing worlds and encounter wild and colorful characters. Movies have also been used to convey truths about society that are more easily digested in a fictional format. Difficult topics such as the nature of humanity, love, and war have all been explored with film as the tool that disseminates these themes into the consciousness of the masses. With the rise of mass media and popular culture came the onset of a collective consciousness that could be shared by people all over the world, rather than people of a particular culture relying on their own ancestry and specific history.

  • You Say Goodbye, I Say Tony & Kris Together Again for the First Time
July 17, 2017, Issue 559 Together Again For The First Time There’s more to the new WWYZ/Hartford morning pairing than the typical late career format jump. Many years ago, Cory Myers met a friend at the suburban Hartford nightclub Fantasia. While there, she had a conversation with the booth deejay about her interest in radio. Myers spent a year-and-a-half as an intern for that deejay, Damon Scott, at Hot AC WTIC-FM before mov- ing on to a career that culminated in her now two-decade run at crosstown Country WWYZ. Last month, Scott joined Myers in mornings at WWYZ. As for the club, it’s now called Cadillac Ranch. And, yes, they play country. Cory Myers Chemistry Lab: With their history, Scott and Myers have an obvious chemistry that may actually be combustible. “I have a couple of working titles for this story,” jokes Scott. “’The Future of Country Music’ or ‘Two Mete- ors Collide.’” With that, he and Myers are off My Guy: The Curb crew celebrates Dylan Scott’s first No. 1 “My to the races, finishing each other’s sentences Girl” today in Nashville. Pictured (l-r) are Jim Ed Norman, Mike without skipping a beat. Rogers, Scott, Taylor Childress, Ryan Dokke and RJ Meacham. Scott left his afternoon post at CBS Radio See the whole Curb family on page 7. Damon Scott last month after 28 years. “I can’t say enough about how they treated me,” says Scott. “Not only did they let me do my last show, they threw a party for me.

  • Transsexuality in Film by Carolyn Kraus
Transsexuality in Film by Carolyn Kraus Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Representations of transsexuality in films fall along a spectrum from freak-show sexploitation, to dramatic and documentary depictions of the struggles of transsexuals, and, finally, to the metaphorical use of transsexuality in exploring borders, not only sexual borders but also racial, religious, and political ones as well. The Transsexual as Joke Whereas transvestites have been depicted in film since the silent era, transsexuals (people who have undergone sex-change surgery or who choose to live as the opposite gender) entered the movies only in the early 1950s. The earliest celluloid glimpses of transsexuality appeared shortly after news of George/ Christine Jorgensen's 1952 sex-change surgery shocked and mesmerized the world with headlines such as "Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty," "Christine, by George!" and "Thousands in U.S. Don't Know Their True Sex." The first movie attempting to capitalize on the story came from Ed Wood, a quirky filmmaker who was once named the "World's Worst Director." Wood's Glen or Glenda (I Changed My Sex) (1953) tells two stories, one about a transvestite, one about a transsexual. Ex-Dracula Bela Lugosi lurks between scenes delivering screwball pleas for tolerance: "Vat are little boys made ov? Ees eet puppy dog tails? Beeg fat snails? Or maybe brassieres!" The result is pure camp, although Wood, a cross-dresser himself, flashed an intended moral across the screen in the film's opening frames: "Judge Ye Not!" The filming of Glen or Glenda is depicted in Tim Burton's 1994 film biography Ed Wood.

  • Introduction to the Ratification of the Constitution in Maryland
Introduction to the Ratification of the Constitution in Maryland Founding the Proprietary Colony The founding and establishment of the propriety government of Maryland was the product of competing factors—political, commercial, social, and religious. It was intertwined with the history of one family, the Calverts, who were well established among the Yorkshire gentry and whose Catholic sympathies were widely known. George Calvert had been a favorite of the Stuart king, James I. In 1625, following a noteworthy career in politics, including periods as clerk of the Privy Council, member of Parliament, special emissary abroad of the king, and a principal secretary of state, Calvert openly declared his Catholicism. This declaration closed any future possibility of public office for him. Shortly thereafter, James elevated Calvert to the Irish peerage as the baron of Baltimore. Calvert’s absence from public office afforded him an opportunity to pursue his interests in overseas colonization. Calvert appealed to Charles I, son of James, for a land grant.1 Calvert’s appeal was honored, but he did not live to see a charter issued. In 1632, Charles granted a proprietary charter to Cecil Calvert, George’s son and the second baron of Baltimore, making him Maryland’s first proprietor. Maryland’s charter was the first long-lasting one of its kind to be issued among the thirteen mainland British American colonies. Proprietorships represented a real share in the king’s authority. They extended unusual power. Bay Area Roots, Risk & Revision FILMS BY LAWRENCE JORDAN Lawrence Jordan In Person Sunday, May 13, 2007 — 7:30 pm — Yerba Buena Center for the Arts I don’t know about alchemy academically, but I am a practicing alchemist in my own way. —Lawrence Jordan Lawrence Jordan has been making films since 1952. He is most widely known for his animated collage films, which Jonas Mekas has described as, “among the most beautiful short films made today. They are surrounded with love and poetry. His content is subtle, his technique is perfect, his personal style unmistakable.” Tonight’s screening sketches out a sampler of Jordan’s films, starting with Trumpit, a 1950s ‘psychodrama’ starring Stan Brakhage, with sound by Christopher Maclaine; Pink Swine, an anti-art dada collage film set to an early Beatles track; Waterlight the first of Jordan’s “personal/poetic documentaries” made in the 1950s aboard a merchant marine freighter during his days as a wandering flâneur; and Winterlight, a visual poem of the Sonoma County winter landscape. Lawrence Jordan’s four most recent films will conclude the night: Enid’s Idyll, Chateau/Poyet, Poet’s Dream, and Blue Skies Beyond the Looking Glass. (Jenn Blaylock) Trumpit (1956) 16mm, b&w, sound, 6 minutes, print from the maker Stan Brakhage stars as the constricted love in this spoof of pseudo-erotic card play. (LUX) Waterlight (1957) 16mm, color, sound, 7 minutes, print from the maker Among the wanderings that began in the 1950s was the filmmaker's 3-year stint in the merchant marine. Waterlight is a night and day impression of the never-constant, ever-changing vast ocean and its companion the sky.
