(The Parishes of St. John the Baptist & St. Joseph) A CALL TO WELCOME AND TO EMBRACE Dear friends in Christ, this Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost. The Greek word for the feast simply means fiftieth day. The feast of Pentecost thus celebrates the fiftieth day after Easter. It celebrates that day when Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit, to dwell in the Church and in the members of the Church, to teach and to guide in truth, was realized. It celebrates the birthday of the Church. One remarkable event of the Pentecost experience was that people from different walks of life were roped into the warm embrace of the Church. Parthians and Medes, Elamites and Mesopotamians, Judaeans and Cappadocians, Phrygians and Pamphylians, Egyptians and Libyans, Jews, Proselytes and other Romans, all were brought under umbrella of the Church. The fire of the love of the Holy Spirit so consumed their differences that they could hear the mighty deeds of God proclaimed in the one language of the Galileans as if they spoke in their own various languages. This religious experience is so important to the Church that it has been etched into various symbolisms and images of the Church’s traditions, architecture and culture. One of such images of the Church which caught my attention during my sojourn in Rome was the St. Peter’s Square. Standing on the hill on which my University (Urbanniana) was situated, one could appreciate the details of the rich architectural masterpiece of Gianlerenzo Bernini. This afforded me the opportunity to occasionally do some reflection on what the Church stands for. The plaza is a rectangular structure which connects the entrance of the basilica. It has a huge oval space which is surrounded by at least 350 massive columns and pilasters. A view from the top of the hill of Cellegio Urbano revealed some details of the curved lines of columns that surround the oval. These depict arms opened to welcome and to embrace. This architectural masterpiece is symbolic of the maternal arms of Mother Church. Lining the columns and walls around the plaza are 140 taller-than-life-sized statues of saints, of men and women, peasants and kings, hermits and housewives, who come from every period of history and every corner of the globe. The Church has the arms of a mother that are always ready to welcome all her children. She welcomes not only those who are in full communion, but also those still searching for their spiritual home. For over 500 years, these arms of the Church have indeed welcomed pilgrims from every continent, age group, and walk of life. It is estimated that a hundred thousand people can fit inside the plaza. Every year, thousands of pilgrims find themselves in its warm embrace. Every Wednesday, the Pope welcomes pilgrims to the plaza, and in good times the number of pilgrims in those audiences has averaged 20,000 per week. As I enjoy in retrospect my days in Rome, my mind goes back to the unicity in diversity which the warm embrace of St. Peter's Square reflects. There are different shades of people and languages yet all spoke and heard the common language of love, the one language of peace, the single language of forgiveness, the sole language of faith in the Holy Trinity; faith in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. In His Priestly Prayer, Christ prayed “that they may be one…” It has thus been the mission of the Church to bring about unity in Christ. In a world of racial, cultural, political, economic, and social differences, in a world of a divided human family, the Church has a singular prophetic mission of extending her arms to warmly embrace and welcome all and sundry; the Church has the mandate to rain peace into people’s lives, to speak forgiveness into a world of fragile peace and broken promises, to tear down the walls of division and fill the trenches of dissension that set us apart; and unite us together as one. This mission of the Church began on the day of Pentecost. It will never stop until all are united in Christ. You and I are agents of that mission. Let us, therefore, pray for the wisdom to cooperate with the Holy Spirit so that our lives will be a Pentecostal flame that will burn arrows into plowshares, sickles into pruning hooks, consume manmade differences and build bridges of peace to bring about unity, forgiveness, and tranquility.
