General Synod Report for Diocesan Synod Introduction - Lucy Our February group of sessions took place between the 13th – 16th Feb down at Church House in London. Nick (Land) and I both made our maiden speeches successfully without being given the dreaded bell and Linda continued to perfect her chairing skills and even successfully pulled off some humour! No mean feat while sat in the chair! You’ll know from news coverage there was a certain hotly anticipated debate scheduled for the Wednesday but Linda and I will attempt to give you a BBC style, non-biased report of the main events over the course of the week. Anniversary of the Reformation – Linda The Faith and Order Commission of the Church of England with support of the Council of Christian Unity presented this motion in the context of the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the European Reformation and the Church of England’s understanding of the doctrine of justification as expressed in our historic formularies. Archbishop of Canterbury Presidential Address – Linda He stated that we are a cross-shaped people and the time has come to re-imagine our future in light of all the uncertainty of our time. The future offers many opportunities to which we should rise when we find in the country a skills gap, failing NHS and Social Care, and high greenhouse gas emission. The Church could be part of the answer, as we have a deep strong reach into the community recognising as a Church we are also guilty of abuse and we must not resist addressing these appalling matters. -

From the Bishop of Oxford As a Diocese, we are prayerfully seeking the person whom God is calling to be the next Bishop of Dorchester, one of three Area bishops in the Diocese of Oxford. At the heart of our vision we discern a call to become a more Christ-like Church for the sake of God’s world: contemplative, compassionate and courageous. Most of all we are seeking a new Bishop for Dorchester who will seek to model those qualities and inspire the Church of England across the Dorchester Area to live them out in our daily lives. Our new Bishop will therefore be a person of prayer, immersed in the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, able to be at home with and to love the clergy, parishes and benefices in many different church traditions and many different social contexts. We are seeking a person able to watch over themselves in a demanding role and to model healthy and life-giving patterns of ministry. We want our new bishop to be an inspiring leader of worship, preacher and teacher in a range of different contexts and to be a pastor to the ministers of the Area. The Bishop of Dorchester leads a strong and able Area Team in taking forward the common vision of the Diocese of Oxford in the Dorchester Area. Full details of that process can be found in these pages and on our diocesan website. We are therefore seeking a Bishop who can demonstrate commitment and experience to our diocesan priorities. The Bishop of Dorchester holds a significant place in the civic life of the area: we are therefore seeking a bishop who is able to make a confident contribution to wider society beyond the life of the church in civil, ecumenical and interfaith engagement and who is able to live and articulate the Christian gospel in the public square. -

The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic Dear Readers, The publication on the Ro- man Catholic Church which you are holding in your hands may strike you as history that belongs in a museum. How- ever, if you leaf through it and look around our beauti- ful country, you may discover that it belongs to the present as well. Many changes have taken place. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. Ecumenical cooperation, which was strengthened by decades of persecution and bullying of the Church, is flourishing remarkably in this country. -

The Methodist Church Channel Islands District BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY CIRCUIT Minister for Sark Ecumenical Partnership Do you place an importance on the church living and working amongst its community? Do you value ecumenism, and the importance of different approaches to being the church of God? Would you relish the opportunity to minister and engage with a wide breadth of society? Can you ride a bike? If the answer is “yes” to the above – then please read on! The Sark Ecumenical Partnership was formed in September 2017 – a partnership in ministry between the Methodist Church and the Church of England. It has been agreed by both partners that we will seek the appointment of a Methodist presbyter to serve in Sark from September 2019 who will serve as the minister for Sark Methodist Chapel and as the minister in charge at St. Peter’s (Anglican) parish church - as well as being an important member of the community, sharing the gospel and being involved in many outreach opportunities. Below is information we hope you will find helpful as you seek to discern whether this is a ministry to which God might be calling you. What skills are we looking for? A ‘people person.’ Both churches agreed the presbyter needs to be a ‘people’ person. Pastorally, the minister will find themselves approached by those who attend the church and chapel as well as those who attend neither regularly. A resilient person. The minister needs to be thick skinned and broad shouldered as they will be expected to listen to a range of views. -

Having had to move out of the Lodgings at the beginning instead of the end of the summer vacation, in order to allow time for necessary work to be done, I feel as if I am having an unusually prolonged retirement process, but the moment will come when the clock strikes midnight on 30 September and I cease to be Warden and Sir Jonathan Phillips takes over. The past sixteen years have been an extraordinarily rich experience, and I suspect that no one except another head of house really knows the full range of what is entailed. -

Like many of our churches, including our own, the Cathedral re-opens for worship at Holy Week (in fact for the annual Chrism Mass on Wednesday 31st) and for the Easter celebration. It will be good to celebrate the risen Christ back in our churches - and I love the corona above the cathedral altar, which to me speaks of the crown of thorns become a crown of glory. 1 THE CHIRBURY HILLS GROUP OF PARISHES is part of the Pontesbury Group Ministry, comprising the parishes of Chirbury, Marton, Middleton w Corndon Marsh, Trelystan & Leighton. RECTOR’S OFFICE DAY - Revd Bill normally sets aside Monday of each week as a day for catching up with the stuff on his desk. This is therefore also a good day to catch him by phone! OUR COVID PRECAUTIONS - All our churches are aiming to be as Covid secure as possible; these St Podwell’s are the rules we’re applying: As far as possible avoid touching door furniture and other surfaces as you enter and leave the church, and make use of the hand gel provided. -
