For instance, in Iranian cinema representations of children are often utilized to minimise the political risk involved in making radical statements, while in Brazilian and Italian cinemas children‟s portrayal has disputed the idealized concept of childhood‟s innocence. In Indonesian cinema, internationally acclaimed director Garin Nugroho is the only filmmaker who has presented children as the main focus of narratives that are oppositional to mainstream and state-sponsored ideologies. Yet, even though his films have been critically identified as key, breakthrough works in Indonesian cinema, no research so far has specifically focused on the representation of children in his films. Consequently, because Garin Nugroho has consistently placed child characters in central roles in his films, the discussion in this thesis focuses on the ideological and discursive implications of his cinematic depiction of children. With the central question regarding the construction of children‟s identities in Garin‟s films, the thesis analyzes in detail four of these films, dedicating an entire chapter to each one of them, and with the last one being specifically addressed in cinematic essay form. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally. -

The study presents the text of the fi lm as micro level of semiotic analysis. The purpose of the study is to uncover the ideology of Garin Nugroho fi lms which apply high aesthetic and anthropology construction of an exotic Indonesian culture. The result shows that the ideology resistance manifested in the fi lm of “Daun di Atas Bantal” is the philosophy reconstruction of art democratization as the power to sup- press the regime of Suharto and the new order. “Opera jawa” fi lm is the reconstruction of gender philosophy and Java femininity as well as the philosophy of the nature cosmology in the perspective of moderate Hindu Islam in presenting the greediness of human in the system of the nature ecology. The fi lm of ‘Mata tertutup’ is the philosophy reconstruction of moderate Islam to counter the power of radicalism and terrorism as the concept developed and related to the tenacity of nationalism system of the young generation in Indonesia. “Soegija” fi lm is the reconstruction of Christology philosophy and the values of minority leadership in the nationhood and statehood. The fi lm of “Tjokroaminoto Guru Bangsa” is the reconstruction of Islam philosophy to view the humanism values in the estab- lishment of the foundation of the nation as a moderate view. -

(Un)Civil Society and Political Change in Indonesia (Un)Civil Society and Political Change in Indonesia provides a critical ana- lysis of Indonesia’s civil society and its impact on the country’s democratiza- tion efforts that not only takes the classical, pro-democratic actors of civil society into account but also portrays uncivil groups and their growing influ- ence on political processes. Beittinger-Lee offers a revised categorization of civil society, including a model to define the sphere of ‘uncivil society’ more closely and to identify several subcategories of uncivil society. This is the first book to portray various uncivil groups in Indonesia, ranging from vigilantes, militias, paramilitaries, youth groups, civil security task forces and militant Islamic (and other reli- gious) groups, ethnonationalist groups to terrorist organizations and groups belonging to organized crime. Moreover, it provides the reader with an over- view of Indonesia’s history, its political developments after the democratic opening, main improvements under the various presidents since Suharto’s fall, constitutional amendments and key reforms in human rights legislation. This book will be of interest to upper-level undergraduates, postgraduates and academics in political science and Southeast Asian studies. Verena Beittinger-Lee obtained her PhD from the Department of Southeast Asian Studies at the Alexander von Humboldt University in Berlin in 2007 and now works at a law firm in New York. Article “Thugs-for-Hire”: Subcontracting of State Coercion and State Capacity in China Lynette H. Ong Using violence or threat of violence, “thugs-for-hire” (TFH) is a form of privatized coercion that helps states subjugate a recalcitrant population. I lay out three scope conditions under which TFH is the preferred strategy: when state actions are illegal or policies are unpopular; when evasion of state responsibility is highly desirable; and when states are weak in their capacity or are less strong than their societies. Weak states relative to strong ones are more likely to deploy TFH, mostly for the purpose of bolstering their coercive capacity; strong states use TFH for evasion of responsibility. Yet the state-TFH relationship is functional only if the state is able to maintain the upper hand over the violent agents. Focusing on China, a seemingly paradoxical case due to its traditional perception of being a strong state, I examine how local states frequently deploy TFH to evict homeowners, enforce the one-child policy, collect exorbitant exactions, and deal with petitioners and protestors. However, the increasing prevalence of “local mafia states” suggests that some of the thuggish groups have grown to usurp local governments’ autonomy. The fall of Suharto in May 1998 led to the opening up of a democratic and liberal space as well as the removal of many dis- criminatory measures against the Chinese minority. However, due to the absence of an effective, genuinely reformist party or political coalition, predatory political- business interests nurtured under Suharto’s New Order managed to capture the new political and economic regimes. As a result, corruption and internal mis- management continue to plague the bureaucracy in the country and devolve from the central to the local governments. This article argues that this is due partially to the role some Chinese businesspeople have played in perpetuating corrupt busi- ness practices. As targets of extortion and corruption by bureaucratic officials and youth/crime organizations, Chinese businesspeople are not merely passive and powerless victims of corrupt practices. This article argues, through a combination of Anthony Giddens’s structure-agency theory as well as Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of habitus and field, that although Chinese businesspeople are constrained by the muddy and corrupt business environment, they have also played an active role in shaping such a business environment. -

We are pleased to announce the lineup for CROSSCUT ASIA #03: Colorful Indonesia. The third chapter of the CROSSCUT ASIA series, launched by the Japan Foundation Asia Center and TIFF in 2014 to showcase Asian films, now turns its attention to recent cinema from Indonesia. Known as a nation of “tolerant Islam,” Indonesia is made up of more than 10,000 islands and has regional cultural differences that make it the ultimate land of diversity. TIFF has been presenting outstanding Indonesian films, reflecting the nation’s diverse culture, since the 80’s. In this year’s focus, we will showcase 11 films, from the latest works by veterans to the unique, ambitious work of up-and-coming directors. In the showcase, we will highlight three films by Teddy Soeriaatmadja, whose provocative and powerful work is internationally acclaimed. Along with Soeriaatmadja’s so-called Trilogy About Intimacy, the lineup also includes such rising female directors as Nia Dinata, a pioneer in LGBT films, and Kamila Andini of the Mirror Never Lies.
