The Art of Living The Art of Living One Blackfriars—What is important is not the length of life, but the depth of life. Culture has the power to elevate the everyday into the sublime: to transform a building into sculpture, architecture into art, luxury into a lifestyle and a view into a landscape. One Blackfriars is a magnificent addition to the London skyline. Envisaged as an awe-inspiring sculpture looking down on One Blackfriars the River Thames, the 170-metre-high tower is ideally placed to embrace London’s rich cultural life on the South Bank. With sweeping views across the city and built to a unique design, One Blackfriars has been expertly created for its residents to enjoy the best that London has to offer. 1 COMPUTER ENHANCED IMAGE OF ONE BLACKFRIARS IS INDICATIVE ONLY 2 3 PANCRAS ROAD The Location: An Area of Distinction ISLINGTON YORK WAY PENTONVILLE ROAD KING’S CROSS PENTONVILLE CITY ROAD SHOREDITCH REGENT’S PARK EUSTON ROAD Sadler’s Wells EUSTON Theatre University of London OLD STREET GRAY’S INN RD CLERKENWELL LAMB’S CONDUIT CLERKENWELL RD The British BARBICAN Barbican Centre Museum HOLBORN LIVERPOOL STREET FITZROVIA FARRINGDON CITY OF MARYLEBONE OXFORD CIRCUS LONDON HOLBORN TEMPLE OXFORD STREET St Paul’s BANK COVENT London School Cathedral TOTTENHAM CITY THAMESLINK NEW BOND STREET COURT ROAD GARDEN of Economics REGENT STREET 30 St Mary Royal Opera BLACKFRIARS BRIDGE Axe SOHO CANNON STREET House MILLENNIUM BLACKFRIARS Savile Row PIER BRIDGE MILLENNIUM King’s College Somerset BRIDGE SOUTHWARK London WATERLOOHouse BRIDGE Oxo BRIDGE LONDON Shakespeare’s MAYFAIR Royal Academy PICCADILLY National Tower Globe of Arts CIRCUS The National Theatre Gallery GROUND UPPER RIVER THAMES BLACKFRIARS BANKSIDE PIER HUNGERFORD BRIDGESouthbank Tate Modern Centre STAMFORD ST Borough Market ONE BLACKFRIARS TOOLEY STREET THE MALL LONDON BRIDGE GREEN PARK The London SOUTHWARK SOUTH BANK Eye ST JAMES’S PARK WATERLOO SOUTHWARK WESTMINSTER BRIDGE A MODERN AND IMPRESSIVE NEW LANDMARK ON Buckingham London South BOROUGH Palace Bank University THE SKYLINE OF LONDON, LOCATED ON THE WORLD Big Ben WESTMINSTER LAMBETH Westminster FAMOUS RIVER THAMES. THE BUILDING WILL BECOME AN IMPORTANT FOCUS AS THE AREA DEVELOPS TO BECOME A COMPELLING NEW ARCHITECTURAL HUB IN THE CAPITAL. The Lansetti II vase by Finnish artist Timo Sarpaneva provided the inspiration, and has been brought to life architecturally in the building’s curved geometry, transparent glass surface and spirit of movement. This tower has been carefully designed by British architect Ian Simpson of SimpsonHaugh and Partners. It has been his passion to deliver this architectural vision without compromise over 15 years of endeavour, development and research. Its curving silhouette made it an instant design icon thatis now housed in the collections of the V&A Museum in London and The Met in New York. The artist Timo Sarpaneva was one of the leading figures of modern Finnish art and design. His pieces range from glass to homeware, and from artworks to graphics. He has been recognised as a master of many materials who had a “rare ability to mesmorise and to worship beauty.” IMAGES COURTESY OF MARJATTA12 AND ALEKSEI SARPANEVA 13 The ambition Ian Simpson first drew the dynamic shape of One Blackfriars in a sketchpad fifteen years ago. After all this time, and many years of design research and structural development, it is finally being faithfully realised. The architect’s ambition was to create a structure that looks sculptural, elegant and slender from every angle. The influence of modernist sculpture is evident in the way One Blackfriars elegantly leans outwards before reaching the bow and then drives skyward to create a dramatic culmination that pierces the sky. It has been designed almost as an object to behold, not just a building and it is a particular masterpiece that reveals itself in a myriad of ways, dependent on where you are in relation to it. The architect Revered architectural studio SimpsonHaugh and Partners was established by Ian Simpson and Rachel Haugh in 1987 and has won many awards throughout its history for projects across the United Kingdom. Ian and his practice are known for their innovative and knowledgeable approach to architecture, always creating beautiful buildings in fantastic locations. 14 15 COMPUTER ENHANCED IMAGE OF ONE BLACKFRIARS IS INDICATIVE ONLY 17 The Apartments: Modern Luxury ONE BLACKFRIARS HAS BROUGHT TOGETHER LEADING EXPERTS FROM THE INTERIORS, LANDSCAPING AND LIGHTING PROFESSIONS TO CREATE A NEW ARCHITECTURAL LANDMARK.
