Freakangels.com, CC BY-SA The extraordinary resignation of its chief political editor, Peter Oborne, from the Daily Telegraph has given us cause to think about the importance of corporate influence in journalism and the significance of advertising revenue to newspapers. As these events occurred, the paper’s Ben Riley-Smith was providing us with further proof, if any were needed, that advertising will play a major part in May’s general election. Dods Monitoring International Development - manifesto commitments 2015 February 2015 Introduction By Chris Fairbank Senior Political Consultant In previous years the major three parties have made general and vague commitments to support international de- velopment and humanitarian projects. The success of Michael Moore and Bill Cash’s Private Members Bills, as well as the Department for International Development’s (DFID) budget of 0.7 per cent have forced parties to look beyond their typical commitments and go further than their previously ‘obvious’ ideas. Climate change had been one area NGOs, such as Christian Aid, have called on the parties to make explicit pledges. Manifestos are normally just a nod to a deeper, yet unpublished party policy, and 2015 will be no exception, espe- cially as the Conservatives face off against UKIP in many seats. UKIP will use the fact the coalition have provided aid to India, China and Russia in the past few years and a recent NAO report as a tool to attack the modern Conserva- tives. Labour have looked to the public for inspiration on their policy, ‘Britain’s Global Role’ policy commission for ideas and the thrust of policy stance which pledges to focus on tax, climate change and eliminating global poverty by 2030. The Liberal Democrats share the same target and have relied on their membership to steer them towards poli- cies on malaria, gender equality, female genital mutilation (FGM), disability, tax and women's rights. The Conservatives are more of a mystery when it comes to policy formation and development, although would struggle to justify reversing coalition policy which has been pushed by Justine Greening, Andrew Mitchell and David Cameron. -

Labour may have picked up more than 800 council seats and talk of replacing Ed Miliband as Leader before the next election may be suddenly going a bit quiet, but a share of the vote of 38 per cent is less than David Cameron enjoyed two years before the last General Election and that wasn’t enough to give him a majority at Westminster, so what must Labour now do to try to capitalise on this undoubted boost? Douglas Alexander is Shadow Foreign Secretary and one of Ed Miliband’s key strategists. So clearly a good result for Labour and some important results in Scotland which we’ll come onto in a moment. And yet you know again and again we’ve had mid-term local election results under Labour, under the Conservatives in the past, which haven’t followed through to General Elections, so what’s the strategy for what happens next? DOUGLAS ALEXANDER: Well let’s try and understand what we saw this week. I mean of course we saw real progress for Labour not just in the South of England but in the North of Scotland, but we have to accept that this was actually a damning verdict on the Conservatives as much as it was a judgement on the progress that Labour has made. This is a government that promised that they had a plan to get the economy moving, and now 1 we’ve seen a double dip recession, rising unemployment, flat-lining growth, a plan that just has failed. -

REGISTER OF INTERESTS OF MEMBERS’ SECRETARIES AND RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (As at 29 September 2015) INTRODUCTION Purpose and Form of the Register In accordance with Resolutions made by the House of Commons on 17 December 1985 and 28 June 1993, holders of photo-identity passes as Members’ secretaries or research assistants are in essence required to register: ‘Any occupation or employment for which you receive over £335 from the same source in the course of a calendar year, if that occupation or employment is in any way advantaged by the privileged access to Parliament afforded by your pass. Any gift (eg jewellery) or benefit (eg hospitality, services) that you receive, if the gift or benefit in any way relates to or arises from your work in Parliament and its value exceeds £335 in the course of a calendar year.’ In Section 1 of the Register entries are listed alphabetically according to the staff member’s surname. Section 2 contains exactly the same information but entries are instead listed according to the sponsoring Member’s name. Administration and Inspection of the Register The Register is compiled and maintained by the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. Anyone whose details are entered on the Register is required to notify that office of any change in their registrable interests within 28 days of such a change arising. An updated edition of the Register is published approximately every 6 weeks when the House is sitting. Changes to the rules governing the Register are determined by the Committee on Standards in the House of Commons, although where such changes are substantial they are put by the Committee to the House for approval before being implemented. -

It You can email me here. is another deeply ideological strike against standards and effective teaching of the 3Rs in our primary schools. Many of its contributors oppose the very idea of school 'standards' and have an ideological opposition to external testing. They have been permanent critics of the changes of recent decades. And it is only in that light that the review's conclusions can be understood. Of course, there is no conflict between teaching literacy and numeracy, and the other subjects within the primary curriculum. And the best schools do indeed show how doing them all well provides a good and rounded education. Presenting this as the point of difference is a diversionary Aunt Sally. However, there is a very real conflict between recognising the need to single literacy and numeracy out for extra time over the other subjects as with the dedicated literacy and numeracy lessons, and making them just another aspect of primary schooling that pupils may or may not pick up along the way.
