Matt Hires Emerged As a Golden-Voiced Troubadour with a Penchant for Setting Heart-On-Sleeve Lyrics to Sweetly Infectious Melody
www.matthiresmusic.com www.facebook.com/matthires http://twitter.com/matthires BIOGRAPHY On his debut album, Matt Hires emerged as a golden-voiced troubadour with a penchant for setting heart-on-sleeve lyrics to sweetly infectious melody. Now, on his sophomore release entitled This World Won't Last Forever, But Tonight We Can Pretend, Hires weaves in grander arrangements, brighter hooks, and a more richly textured sound to assert himself as a formidable new force in the singer-songwriter realm. “My favorite artists are the ones who keep making records that give you something different from what came before, but still hold onto their own unique sound overall,” says the 27-year-old Tampa-based singer/guitarist. “With this album, I pushed into the direction of making music that’s more fun and pop-oriented but also retains that sense of honesty that I’ve always valued as a songwriter.” Indeed, the album offers up more than its share of sing-along-worthy melodies and sunny harmonies, all while elegantly showcasing Hires’s warm yet masterful vocal work. At the same time, the album bears a bigger, more bombastic energy that reveals the deep-seated influence of rock-and-roll heroes like The Band and Bruce Springsteen. And all throughout the album (the follow-up to 2008’s Take Us To The Start), Hires delivers delicately rendered lyrics that shift between sharp-eyed social commentary and strikingly intimate storytelling. “Even though I broke out of the traditional singer-songwriter mold, there are still some songs that are very confessional,” Hires notes. -
Robertson Davies Fifth Business Fifth Business Definition: Those Roles Which, Being Neither Those of Hero Nor Heroine, Confidant
Robertson Davies Fifth Business Fifth Business Definition: Those roles which, being neither those of Hero nor Heroine, Confidante nor Villain, but which were nonetheless essential to bring about the Recognition or the denouement, were called the Fifth Business in drama and opera companies organized according to the old style; the player who acted these parts was often referred to as Fifth Business. —Tho. Overskou, Den Daaske Skueplads I. Mrs. Dempster 1 My lifelong involvement with Mrs. Dempster began at 8 o’clock p.m. on the 27th of December, 1908, at which time I was ten years and seven months old. I am able to date the occasion with complete certainty because that afternoon I had been sledding with my lifelong friend and enemy Percy Boyd Staunton, and we had quarrelled, because his fine new Christmas sled would not go as fast as my old one. Snow was never heavy in our part of the world, but this Christmas it had been plentiful enough almost to cover the tallest spears of dried grass in the fields; in such snow his sled with its tall runners and foolish steering apparatus was clumsy and apt to stick, whereas my low-slung old affair would almost have slid on grass without snow. The afternoon had been humiliating for him, and when Percy as humiliated he was vindictive. His parents were rich, his clothes were fine, and his mittens were of skin and came from a store in the city, whereas mine were knitted by my mother; it was manifestly wrong, therefore, that his splendid sled should not go faster than mine, and when such injustice showed itself Percy became cranky. -

Because of these crimes, the city has become a symbol for all of what is wrong with globalization, transnational exploitation and the Latin American form of masculine domination known as machismo. Terms like femicidios or feminicidios have been coined in order to express that women, far from being this crime wave’s collateral damage, are rather their specific target, and that their sex is the factor that gives this vortex of violence its inner logic and coherence. -

Andrea Chalupa: Hi, It’S Andrea Chalupa of Gaslit Nation
Gaslit Nation Transcript 20 May 2020 “BONUS: Tori Amos Reads ‘Resistance’” Andrea Chalupa: Hi, it’s Andrea Chalupa of Gaslit Nation. My co-host Sarah Kendzior and I read the new memoir by Tori Amos, “Resistance: A Songwriter’s Story of Hope, Change and Courage”. We are both incredibly inspired by this book. “Resistance” has important insights on the creative process and why–as we’re always saying on Gaslit Nation–art matters, especially in times of crisis. Check out our interview with Tori, published on May 19. We’re thrilled to share an excerpt with our listeners from her chapter on the inspiration behind her classic song, “Cornflake Girl”, which concludes with Tori reading the lyrics. This excerpt of “Resistance” is provided to us courtesy of Simon & Schuster Audio and read by Tori Amos. {transition music} Tori Amos: Chapter 8. A drum and bass groove greeted me and Karen Binns as we walked down the street in 1993, a book under my arm. She and I were in deep discussion about how women could be abusive to each other and the many different ways that can play out. I didn’t know it, but in that very moment a song was being born–a song that has sparked varied interpretations by its listeners in the past 27 years. Once a song leaves my lair, it will form relationships that I have no control over and really should not want to have control over. But the fact is, each song does have a genesis. Do I consciously know every aspect of the pollination process that creates a song? No.
