On this occasion, we extend our sincere thanks to each and everyone who has made our first issue a grand success. We hope this second issue will be much more acceptable to our well-wishers who search for new sources of information. In recent decades, the growth of knowledge has prompted researchers and academicians to join in addressing complex problems that must be attacked simultaneously with deep knowledge from different perspectives. We strongly believe that in this modern world of unrest and uncertainties the vision of our patron St. Thomas Aquinas, a scholar and theologian with unparalleled insight, is of great importance. He views that knowledge is what helps man to actualize the potentialities of the human mind. It is with this in mind that we have ventured into the ever evolving area of research and its publication. The present issue of Aquinas Journal of Multidisciplinary Research is a glance across the research landscape of different ideas and approaches from various disciplines. It provides a platform for the researchers and academicians to share their knowledge. We wish all to stimulate your discussions and innovations through this journal. It aims to be a space for discussion and critique through the presentation of theoretical and empirical evidences. The editorial board expresses the sincere gratitude to all the contributors who have generously shared their expertise with us. We thank all our well-wishers for their whole hearted support and co-operation in making the publication of this issue a reality. We would also take this opportunity to thank the editorial board for their commitment and passion in bringing out this eventful issue. Editors: Prof. Sylvia K. Mohanan1 1Dept. of Electronics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin -22, Kerala, 2Institute for Plasma Research, Ahmedabad, Gujarat [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT Split Ring Resonator (SRR) embedded for measuring electron density in low-temperature plasmas is presented in this paper. The device comprises of a resonant structure fabricated on a dielectric substrate that consists of two concentric rings having splits at diametrically opposite ends. The presence of splits allows the geometry to resonate at a particular frequency which is a function of the electric pat length between the rings, the composite dielectric constant of the substrate and the medium in which SRR is immersed. The resonance characteristics are investigated for different geometries using commercial electromagnetic simulation tools, Ansoft-HFSS and CST-Microwave Studio, and validated experimentally. Using this method qualitative information of spatial sensitivity and the Quality factor of the resonators are studied. The device is applied to magnetized plasma chamber for measuring electron density and compared against standard Microwave Hairpin probe. Keywords: Split Ring Resonator, Hairpin Resonator, Low-Temperature Plasma. 1 Aquinas Journal of Multidisciplinary Research INTRODUCTION Modern life-style is predominantly dependent on plasma technologies ranging from communication, energy security and bio-medical applications. The plasma technologies are inevitably used for a large variety of applications from the manufacturing of Pentium chips, anti-reflection coatings on solar photo-voltaic cells, surface modification of artificial medical implants, etc. These technologies require precise controlling of plasma parameters involved during the processing of substrates. Plasma diagnostics plays a vital role for characterizing the plasma tools. Precise measurement of plasma parameters and sensors for monitoring plasma properties can ensure process reproducibility thereby reducing the manufacturing cost [1]. The present study focuses on investigating the property of a split-ring-resonator for diagnosing the electron density of a given Plasma environment. The device is based on microwave resonance of a well-defined geometry. The main advantage of the device is that it is a planar device that can be embedded on the wall of the plasma source and has adequate spatial resolution. 1. THE SPLIT RING RESONATOR PROBE A simple circular split ring resonator is used for the study [2]. The geometry of the structure used is depicted in fig. 1. The design of the resonator based on the equivalent circuit of the split ring resonator is explained in the following paragraphs. The resonance frequency of the SRR depends on the geometry and the dimensions of the resonator i.e. the dielectric properties of the substrate, the width of the rings, gap between the rings, the radius of the rings, the position of the slot, etc. A MATLAB based GUI calculator [3] is used in this study to calculate the dimensions of the SRR. The parameters of the Split Ring Resonator are detailed below. 2 Aquinas Journal of Multidisciplinary Research h = height of the Desired frequency = 3GHz. substrate, rex = Substrate used = FR4 (Relative

  • Political News Election
HTTP://WWW.UPSCPORTAL.COM POLITICAL NEWS ELECTION COMMISSION AT 60 After overseeing 15 general elections to the Lok Sabha, the Election Commission of India, in its diamond jubilee year, can with justifiable pride claim to have nursed and st rengthened the electoral processes of a nascent democracy. The successes have not been consiste nt or uniform, but over the last six decades the ECI managed to make the worlds largest democratic p rocess freer and fairer. One of the instruments of this success is surely the Model Code of C onduct. D esigned to offer a level playing field to all political parties, it has been used to neu tralise many of the inherent advantages of a ruling party in an election. Although the model code wa s originally based on political consensus and does not still enjoy statutory sanction, it served as a handy tool for placing curbs on the abuse of the official machinery for campaigning. While ther e have been complaints of excess in the sometimes mindless application of the model code, th e benefits have generally outweighed the costs. After the Election Commission was made a three-member body, its functioning beca me more institutionalised and more transparent with little room for the caprices of an o verbearing personality. The diamond jubilee is also an occasion for the ECI to look at the challenges ah ead, especially those relating to criminalisation of politics and use of money power in elections. Neither of these issues is new. What is clear is that the efforts of the Commission to t ackle them have generally lacked conviction and have not yielded any significant results.

About the Book IGNCA is a treasure-trove of cultural artifacts including a rich repository of Video documentaries (published) and Audio and Video DVDs (unpublished). This book – based on the author’s two-year project -- envisions an on-line A-V cultural archive KALASAMPADA that consists of A-V materials stored at IGNCA for the categories of: Interviews; Ritual Documentation; Archaeological Sites and Walk-through; Events; Festivals; Performances (music-dance-theatre-puppetry-mime); Lectures; Seminars; and Workshops. In order to make such a wide variety of materials available on-line – initially on the Intranet, subsequently on a potential Extranet, and eventually (although very selectively) on the Internet – the following digitisation road-map is observed in the project: Conversion of primary A-V materials from analogue to digital format; Creation of data sheets for metadata tagging, following the international standard of Dublin Core Metadata Element Set (DCMES); Integration of metadata with primary A-V material in IGNCA’s Intranet; Access and retrieval by “simple search” with keywords for casual browsers and “advanced search” for users, researchers and scholars with reference to groups of keywords from the intranet. The objectives of the project of on-line A-V cultural archive are: to bring it into public domain; to make it inter-active for scholars; and to make it internationally compatible. Basic advantages of such a project are really five-fold. First, a digital A-V archive assures the near permanent durability of the A-V material. Secondly, it allows need-based quality enhancement. Thirdly, an archive of this kind makes room for highly economic storage of vulnerable Audio and Video files.

Student Paper PARICHAY PATRA Spectres of the New Wave : The State of the Work of Mourning, and the New Cinema Aesthetic in a Regional Industry 1 Introduction My title refers to Derrida’s controversial account of his concern with Marx amidst the din and bustle of the ‘end of history’. Time was certainly out of joint and the pluralistic outlook of the great thinker was pitted against the monolith that orthodox communists used to uphold. My primary concern in the paper would be an account of the Malayalam film industry in its post-New Wave phase as well as a handful of filmmakers whose works seem to be difficult to categorize. Within the domain of the popular and amidst the mourning from the film society circle for the movement that lasted no longer than a decade, these films evoke the popular memory of the New Wave. Though up in arms against the worthy ancestors, these filmmakers are unable to conceal their indebtedness to the latter. The New Wave too was not without its heterogeneity, and the “disjointed now” that I am talking about is something “whose border would still be determinable”. I would like to consider the possibility of moving towards translocal contexts without shifting our focus from a specific site of inquiry which, in this case, is Malayalam cinema. The paper will concentrate upon the phenomenon known JOURNAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE 81 as the resurfacing/resurgence of art cinema aesthetics in Indian cinema. Recent scholarly interest in the history of this forgotten film movement is noticeable, more so because it was ignored in the age of disciplinary incarnation of cinematic scholarship in India.
