Dave Tikker has led the way for athletes and athletic directors his entire life. He is well known throughout Washington as an outstanding athletic director, counselor, coach and mentor.

Graduating from Wilbur High School in 1971, Dave was the last of the rare four sport athletes. He was in a final group of athletes that were allowed to compete in both and track during the spring. Dave competed in football, , baseball and track during high school. While at Wilbur, Dave was an all league athlete in all four sports in which he participated, including pole vault and high jump.

After graduation in 1971, Dave stayed in eastern Washington when he decided to begin his college career at Whitworth University. Dave joined the Pirate basketball team where he played each year as a starter and contributing player. However, he did not limit his extracurricular activities to basketball; he was also a two year member of the Whitworth Jazz Band as well. Dave graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts in Recreation and Theatre Arts, and with degree in hand, quickly headed out to make a difference in other people’s lives.

Dave started his career in education with the Almira School District from 1977-1979. As in many small schools, Dave taught many subjects including junior high science, math, social studies and high school business math, biology and life science. With a variety of teaching experiences in hand, Dave decided to return to his college alma mater, Whitworth, accepting positions as a grad assistant teaching , soccer and basketball activity classes. That lasted just a short year when he was offered and accepted a teaching and coaching position in the Mead School District. Little did he know at the time, this would be his last job switch for the remainder of his teaching career. During his tenure Dave taught health, social studies and physical education before transitioning the past fifteen years into a middle school counselor and athletic director position. Dave has had a tremendous impact on the youth in the Mead School District as a teacher, coach, counselor and administrator.

Involvement and giving back to the athletes and athletic directors has always defined Dave Tikker. He has worked tirelessly to be a part of his school, league, district and state associations. He was a member of the WSSAAA Board representing District VIII as the middle level voice of expertise.

Whether running the WSSAAA state conference, serving as WSSAAA President or eventually hired as the Executive Director of WSSAAA, these activities provide a glimpse as to the depth of his involvement and commitment. At the national level, Dave’s reputation as a leader and mentor earned him an appointment with the National Executive Directors as their Section III representative. In 2012, he instituted a middle level conference that has grown and is now offered in multiple areas around our state. Dave continues to present at state and national conferences. Many athletic administrators stand in awe of his energy and determination.

Dave is an accomplished and published leader who has the utmost respect and appreciation of his colleagues and associates. He was honored in 2007 as the District VIII Athletic Director of the Year and then the WSSAAA State Athletic Director of the Year. Throughout his career Dave has had numerous honors bestowed upon him including the prestigious 2003 NIAAA State Award of Merit.

Dave and his wife of 33 years, Cindy, have raised three daughters that were all outstanding, character driven, student- athletes. They have counseled, guided and supported Kati (Bodecker), Karli and Kelli throughout their individual athletic experiences and not surprisingly, all three daughters have gone on to coach and/or teach based on the support, role-modeling and lifetime lessons provided by their parents. Mike began his education career in 1986 accepting a teaching position at Sacajawea Jr. High School in the Federal Way School District where he taught special education and PE & health courses. Mike coached several different sports in the area and in 1990 accepted the assistant girls basketball position at Seattle Pacific University where he was in charge of defense and recruiting.

In 1996, Mike and family relocated to Bellingham when he accepted a PE & health position and head girls basketball coach at Sehome High School. Three years later, Mike transferred to Squalicum High School and spent the next 10 years as the head boys basketball coach winning 144 games against 62 losses.

Mike’s introduction into athletic administration began in 2002 while at Squalicum HS when he took on the duties and responsibilities of Athletic & Activities Coordinator. Under his leadership Squalicum would win 5 state championships and had 12 top 8 state finishes. He served as the event manager for district and state events during this time in basketball, wrestling, volleyball, golf, soccer and track & field.

In 2009, Mike accepted the Athletic & Activities Director position at Lynden High School. In his short 3+ years leading Lynden athletics, the Lions have won 5 state 2A championships and had 9 top 8 finishes. Much like when he was at Squalicum, Mike served as the event manager for district and state events in basketball, wrestling, volleyball, softball and track & field. Mike earned his Certified Master Athletic Administrator (CMAA) in 2011 and is the current 2012-13 President of WSSAAA.

Patrick Brown, Squalicum HS Athletic Director states: “Mike McKee is the ideal candidate for the WSSAAA Athletic Director of the Year. After having worked with him for almost 4 years, I think of Mike as an AD’s AD. Mike is highly respected throughout the state of Washington because of his knowledge, integrity and personality.”

Colin Cushman, Sehome High School Athletic Coordinator writes the following: “It is away from work, where I have learned the most (from Mike). Mike has made me a better man. When I am faced with a tough decision I always go back to the things Mike has taught me about doing the right thing. His character and moral ethics are above reproach.”

Aaron Dickson, Music & Young Adults Pastor, Grace Church writes: “Here are a few (phrases) that have shaped us: ‘put another drop of sweat in the bucket’, ‘treat people like gold’, ‘teamwork makes the dreamwork’, ‘misery loves company’, and ‘living the dream’. These phrases are a memorable snapshot into the brilliance of Mr. McKee.” SAM REED Chief Sealth Internation High School 2

Sam grew up outside of Tacoma attending and graduating from Fife High School in 1998. While playing basketball, golf and baseball at Fife, Sam also became involved in student government and the school newspaper. In addition to playing three sports, Sam also worked as an umpire and official for youth basketball, softball and basketball leagues, including being selected to umpire regional and state little league playoff games before turning 18 years old.

After high school, Sam attended Gonzaga University where he showed up at the perfect time to latch on to the Cinderella story of their basketball program success. When he was not jumping up and down in the stands as a leader of the Kennel Club, Sam spent two years in student government serving as Publicity Manager and graduated with a B.A. in Public Relations. Upon graduation, Sam moved back to Tacoma where he spent the next 5 years working in public relations, marketing and publishing while also coaching basketball and volunteering for educational organizations like Junior Achievement and Washington Business Week.

In 2007 Sam came to the realization that his 10+ years of working with kids and in sports was far more rewarding than his work in Corporate America. In August of 2007, Chief Sealth International High School hired Sam to teach a variety of Business Education classes including Financial Planning, Business Operations, Web Design and the International Baccalaureate class Information Technology in a Global Society.

Taking on additional responsibility the following year, Sam was assigned to be the Activity Coordinator overseeing all non-curricular school activities, including clubs, student government, assemblies and family events. In this role he has been instrumental in rebranding and promoting Chief Sealth to the media and in the community helping the schools attendance grow from less than 800 students (2007) to over 1,200 (2011). In June 2009 Sam added the duties as Athletic Director to his job description. He manages a comprehensive high school athletic program that includes 15 sports, 40+ coaches and more than 350 student-athletes. Under his direction, athletic participation has increased by more than 75% in four years.

Sam has served as the 2012-13 Metro League President as well as the Metro League Basketball Commissioner. He also serves as the SeaKing District 2 Eligibility Chairperson.

Jol Raymond, Chief Sealth Counselor states: “There has been a dramatic change in the climate at our school since Sam took over three years ago. Sam has the credibility with staff and students. He listens to student input and fosters real leadership among our kids”

Annette Duvall, Cleveland HS Athletic & Activities Director writes the following: “Inside the building at Sealth with intentional and strategic planning, Sam has creatively found financial resources to support the athletic program, educated coaches, implemented reasonable standards for participants, encouraged student body participation and added special events that have increased an adult and student fan base with the athletic program.”

Katie Hubert, Chief Sealth Librarian expresses the following sentiment: “At every school, many people share the load – but there are always a couple who complete the lion’s share, often for little recognition and even less credit. At Chief Sealth, Sam is THE guy who gets stuff done. We would be a much less organized, classy, and powerful place without him.” JOE KELLER 3 Fife High School

Joe is a 1974 graduate of Clover Park High School where he was a three year varsity starter in both football and baseball. As an all-state selection in 1973 Joe was drafted in the 5th round and signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers Professional Baseball Club as a pitcher. He played 4+ years before an arm injury and complications ended his baseball career.

After the end of his baseball career, Joe attended Washington State University and graduated in 1980, cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in Coaching. It didn’t take long to find his first teaching position. Joe accepted a position at Sheridan High School (Oregon) as an English and PE classroom instructor while also coaching football, basketball and baseball. Three years later Joe returned to Washington near the area where he grew up.

In 1983 Joe began a 16 year teaching and coaching job at Curtis High School in University Place, Tacoma. His duties included teaching English, Physical Education, Health and Careers. His coaching at Curtis involved 14 years as an assistant football coach (1984-97) and 14 years as the head baseball coach (1986-99). Joe was the SPSL Baseball Coach of the Year 3 times: 1986, 1993 & 1995.

Deciding to move in 2000 to neighboring Lakes High School, Joe continued with his teaching and coaching of football and baseball for four more years. From 2005 to 2012 Joe accepted and performed the responsibilities and duties of the Building Athletic Director position at Lakes HS.

Already holding a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction Joe completed his course work to receive a second Master’s Degree in Secondary Administration in 2012. Joe put the school work to good use accepting this past fall (2012) his first administrative job as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Fife High HS.

Joe has been involved at all levels of athletic administration beginning with numerous SPSL leadership positions and playoff contest management. Serving on the West Central District #3 Executive Board since 2006 Joe was the Board President in 2006. He also serves on the WCD Eligibility, Finance and WIAA Representative Assembly committees. Joe is on the first year representing District 3 on the WSSAAA Executive Board. At the national level, Joe sits on the NIAAA Publications and Awards committees.

Rob Swaim, Auburn School District Athletic Director states: “Joe has that special ability to find the common thread that will unite many individuals in pursuit of a single goal. For any challenging, complicated, demanding job I can imagine, he would be my first choice.”

Amanda Fox, Fife HS Principal writes the following: “Joe is not driven by ego, or by recognition opportunities. Rather he is genuinely interested in learning and growing professionally and in doing the hard behind the scenes work that keeps the momentum of high school sports moving in a positive direction.”

Shelly Thiel, WCD #3 Director expresses the following sentiment: “Joe has that unique ‘people skills’ that marks him as the right man for the job. His patience and listening skills are attributes that make him so special.” MICK HOFFMAN Vancouver School District 4
