We had over 400 students graduate and Homecoming Info– 5 are heading off to some of the best trade schools and colleges in America as well as serving our country in many branches of the Spirit Gear –5 Armed Forces. Our athletic programs also had an amazing year. All 23 sports played in some form of post season play while maintaining Key Contacts– 6 a 3.0 or better GPA at the varsity level. We also had two state cham- pions, Rafael Rodriguez for boys diving and Nicole Clark in girls Fines– 7 . What a year for the Spartans!

Transportation– 7 The administrative team and I are already busy planning for the up- coming 2018-19 school year. There will be many new changes here Medicine Drop off– 7 at Sumner High. One change is that we have hired a new Assistant Principal, Ms. Mary Jo Thomas. Mary Jo will be replacing Brandon Skyward Accounts– 7 Bakke as he is moving to be the Principal at Fife High School. Ms. Thomas is coming to us from San Diego County California. She Dress Code– 7 grew up in State and is excited to return “home.” Family Involvement– 7 With our remodel underway I will be sending out a newsletter in Au- Who is my Counselor? - 8 gust with important information on school operations. Please be looking for that email, it will help families understand some of our new Athletic Clearances– 9 practices of operation.

There are many moving parts as you prepare for the new year. It is my hope that this newsletter will answer most of your questions as you gear up for the start of the school year. The SHS office will be closed from June 29 - August 14. If you have pressing questions over the summer please call the district office at 253-891-6000.

Sumner High School has a unique first day of school, de- signed primarily as a school orientation and welcome to new students to help them meet a few new people, and feel more comfortable with their transition to high school. The first half of the school day is designed to welcome 9th grade students as well as NEW 10-12th graders who are joining the Spartan Family in 2018-19.

9th graders and New 10-12th grade students: start school at 7:25am. Once you’ve arrived to school, simply go to the check-in table in the courtyard in front of the school. School lunch service runs as usual for 9th graders and new students. Returning students arrive around 12:15pm and report to advisory by 12:30pm

1st day of school Transportation 9th graders and new 10-12th graders will be picked up according to regular weekday bus sched- ule (NOT the Wednesday late start schedule). School start time is 7:25am. Returning Students in grades 10-12 will begin school at 12:30pm. Bus transportation will be provided five hours later than the regular weekday schedule (NOT the Wednesday late start schedule). For example, if your regular morning bus pick-up time is 7:10am, please go to your stop at 12:10pm.

How Can Families Get Involved?

We encourage families to be involved at SHS, and there are a number of ways to get involved. Parents/guardians are also welcome to attend school events, and we hope to see you there! You can also be involved by checking your students’ attendance and grades on a regular basis. Athletic Clearance Information The school will provide coaches with a clearance list. Athletes MUST be cleared prior to participation in any practice or competi- tion. Sumner High School is now offering the convenience of online athletic registration through a partner company, FamilyID (www.familyid.com), a secure registration platform that provides our families with a way to register and clear athletes for our sports programs. When registered through FamilyID, the system will track all clearance information for each athlete. BEFORE YOU REGISTER 1. PHYSICAL EXAMS: A physical exam must be current within the past 24 months and signed by the physician. If the student’s phys- ical expires during the season, they will not be able to play until a new physical exam is received. 2. COMPLETE ONLINE CONCUSSION & SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST COURSE: The state law requires that student/athletes along with their parent(s)/guardian(s) complete an online concussion course. 4. Click on the link in your email confirmation, which will log you in to FamilyID, and then complete the information requested on the registration form. When you have completed the form, click the "Save & Continue" button.
