In This Issue: Message from Mrs 1 Fall 2018 Newsletter In This Issue: Message From Mrs. Meath Spartan Days—2 Hello Spartan Families! Fee’s/On-line Payments-3 As the 2017-18 year has come to a close I find myself re- 1st Day of School– 4 flecting on what an amazing year we had. Our students and staff blessed our community with food donations, service and sup- Chromebook Info– 4 port, fundraising for others in need all while challenging themselves with rigorous curriculum. We had over 400 students graduate and Homecoming Info– 5 are heading off to some of the best trade schools and colleges in America as well as serving our country in many branches of the Spirit Gear –5 Armed Forces. Our athletic programs also had an amazing year. All 23 sports played in some form of post season play while maintaining Key Contacts– 6 a 3.0 or better GPA at the varsity level. We also had two state cham- pions, Rafael Rodriguez for boys diving and Nicole Clark in girls Fines– 7 wrestling. What a year for the Spartans! Transportation– 7 The administrative team and I are already busy planning for the up- coming 2018-19 school year. There will be many new changes here Medicine Drop off– 7 at Sumner High. One change is that we have hired a new Assistant Principal, Ms. Mary Jo Thomas. Mary Jo will be replacing Brandon Skyward Accounts– 7 Bakke as he is moving to be the Principal at Fife High School. Ms. Thomas is coming to us from San Diego County California. She Dress Code– 7 grew up in Washington State and is excited to return “home.” Family Involvement– 7 With our remodel underway I will be sending out a newsletter in Au- Who is my Counselor? - 8 gust with important information on school operations. Please be looking for that email, it will help families understand some of our new Athletic Clearances– 9 practices of operation. There are many moving parts as you prepare for the new year. It is my hope that this newsletter will answer most of your questions as you gear up for the start of the school year. The SHS office will be closed from June 29 - August 14. If you have pressing questions over the summer please call the district office at 253-891-6000. I hope this summer brings you time to enjoy the things you like to do most. I am sure the 2018-19 school year will be filled with memory making moments. I look forward to seeing you in August at Spartan Days!     Cathy Pearsall-Stipek, Pierce County Auditor; Patricia Goldman, National Postal Forum Secretary; William Henderson, Postmaster General; Pat McCarthy, Deputy Auditor; Lori Augino, Election Specialist Dear Pierce County Residents: I am so very pleased to announce that the Pierce County Election Department was the recipient on September 29, 1999 of the National Postal Forum and the United States Post Office distinguished “Mailing Excellence Award,” the only award given in the Government Category. Deputy Auditor Pat McCarthy, Election Specialist Lori Augino and myself were privileged to receive the beautiful sculptured Steuben Crystal Award. The Mailing Excellence Award was created to honor outstanding achievement in the effective use of the U.S. mail to meet marketing objectives. The award was based on entrants’ use of the service of the United States Postal Services as the primary medium for delivery of the product, message, etc. The three categories were *Business, *Government and *Nonprofit. In early 1994, a team was established: the Auditor’s Office, the local U.S. Post Office, Griffin Envelope Company and Uarco, a manufacturer. Our goal was to design and produce an envelope that would meet all the criteria to be used for Absentee-Vote by Mail. After many tries, in 1999 one was perfected. Results: Voter participation has risen substantially and we have been able to save the taxpayers in excess of $560,000.00 in postage alone over the past five years.   • Athlete of the Year – April 2021
    Tacoma Athletic Commission Athlete of the Year April 2021 The Tacoma Athletic Commission, which serves all schools in Tacoma and Pierce County, proudly announces the Athletes of the Year for the Fall athletic season played during February and March. Twenty-six of the 34 high schools that play interscholastic athletics in the area participated in the program. Athletic Directors and coaches nominated one hundred and fifteen athletes. Eight members of the Athlete of the Year Committee deliberated in length because the talent pool was deep. There were many compelling narratives on why an individual student-athlete should be chosen. Athletes of the Year for tennis and golf will be chosen in the spring. The Tacoma Athletic Commission honors student-athletes three times a year at the end of each athletic season. In June, we award six scholarships to the most outstanding male and female athletes, the most inspirational, and the best multi-sport athletes. The TAC awards sport communication scholarships in honor of Clay Huntington as one of the Founders of the TAC and Stan Naccarato, whose service to the community is legendary. The TAC mission is to honor and celebrate amateur athletics in Pierce County. For 79 years, the Commission has supported various events that have made the community a more robust and better place to live. On behalf of all members of the TAC, we are honored to have the opportunity to partner with all of the schools in Pierce County. We look forward to continuing to build this relationship.
