The University of South Carolina Aiken had its beginning in 1961 when, under authority granted by the General Assembly of South Carolina, the Aiken County Commission for Higher Education entered into an agreement with the University of South Carolina to establish a two-year center in Aiken. A small cadre of faculty and staff were assigned the mission of establishing a college community with acceptable operations and standards. The Aiken Center opened its doors to its first 139 students in September of 1961. Temporarily housed in Banksia, a renovated mansion in the City of Aiken, the Center consisted of three full-time faculty members (one of whom served as Director of the Center) and one secretary. Initially, the school offered only freshman and sophomore courses but throughout the sixties the size and reputation of the Center grew as word of its excellence spread among its constituents. In 1968, the Center The Fountain underwent an institutional self-study and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a branch of the University of South Carolina and as a junior college. The first associate degrees were awarded in June, 1968. The campus of the University of South Carolina Aiken moved from Banksia to its present site in 1972 and physical changes began to occur rapidly. At first, the permanent campus consisted of 100 acres and one multipurpose building which housed all university operations. A library was completed in 1975 and additional land was donated, increasing the campus to 144 acres. Following, in October, 1977, a Student Activities Center was opened. A classroom building was occupied in 1978 and a year later, an auxiliary services building was added. In 1984, an addition to the library was completed and construction of a fine arts center was begun. An apartment complex for USCA students was also ready for occupancy by the fall of 1984. More recent constructional additions to the campus include completion of the Etherredge Center, the Sciences Building, the Children’s Center, Ruth Patrick Science Education Center, the Business and Education Building and the Alan B. Miller Nursing Building. Additional land was recently acquired increasing the campus to 400 acres. Academic and organizational changes also occurred rapidly. The faculty formalized its organizational structure and redefined its role in the governance of the institution in 1974 and 1975. Also, the students reorganized their governing body and more precisely defined their role on campus; the administration and staff structures were overhauled and expanded to continue to meet the demands of the growing academic programs. When the full-time equivalent student enrollment reached 1066 in the fall of 1975, the Aiken Campus was permitted to plan for senior-level courses, as well as create a number of baccalaureate degree programs. In the same year, it received approval as a four-year branch campus by the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina. Aiken was accordingly designated a Recognized Candidate for Senior College Accreditation. A new agreement, in 1975, between the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina and the Aiken County Commission for Higher Education provided for direct involvement of the Aiken faculty in the development of academic programs. In September, 1976, the Board of Trustees granted academic autonomy to the Aiken Campus. The first bachelor’s degrees were granted in May 1977, and in December, 1977, the University of South Carolina Aiken became fully accredited as a senior college. Presently, the college community is comprised of over 3,200 students, over 100 full-time faculty, approximately 110 staff members and 28 administrators. USCA awards bachelors degrees in more than 20 major areas of study, an associate degree in nursing, masters degrees in two areas, and offers a varied program of continuing education courses for the wider community. Today the University of South Carolina Aiken offers students a liberal or professional education designed to develop an understanding of human experience which will equip them for life in a free society. To accomplish this, the University provides students with an opportunity to discover learning processes which enable them to grow personally and socially; it assists students in housing a field of study and in developing expertise in that field. It promotes students’ interaction with a community of active scholars and artists, and it encourages students to use the knowledge which they gain to deal with the problems of a rapidly changing world. The University stresses teaching excellence, faculty and student research, cultural and social activities and community service. 4 2001 Volleyball Guide Chancellor • Athletic Director

5 2001 Volleyball Guide 2001 Outlook

After missing last year’s NCAA Division II Volleyball Tour- nament by the narrowest of margins, second year head coach Will Condon is looking forward to the 2001 season with much anticipation. “The changes in the NCAA selection process for Divi- sion II will make it more difficult than before for us to get in,” said Condon referring to the addition of automatic bids. “But our main goal is to improve each week with every match we play and let the rest take care of itself.” In 2000, the Lady Pacers posted an impressive 24-10 record including a 9-5 mark in Peach Belt Conference play, good enough for a tie for third place with USC Spartanburg. Despite remaining sixth in the South Atlantic Region poll for the entire second half of the season, Condon’s club missed out on an invite to the “Big Dance” after an 11th hour decision by the selection committee. In the past, the top six teams in each region are invited. Other NCAA rule changes that will impact play starting in 2001 include the switch to 30-point rally scoring as seen during the 2000 Olympics and the change that will allow “let” serves. “I think every coach in the country is uncertain as to how the scoring changes will positively or negatively effect their teams,” commented Condon. “We have not played that way before so we just don’t know what to expect. Let serves reward those who serve aggressively. That should help us more than hurt us.” USC Aiken is returning five of six starters and seven of Junior Stacy Rood teams with All-Conference performer Andrea Emmons 12 letterwinners from last season. Aiken, a native of Sturgeon Bay, WI, joined the USCA training staff in 1997 as a graduate assistant working under previous head athletic trainer Jami Craps. Aiken served in that capacity for three years until stepping into the head position in 2000 following the departure of Craps to White Knoll High School in Lexington, SC. The 29-year-old is a 1997 graduate of Saint Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, NC where he received his Bachelor’s of Science in Sports Medicine. 18 2001 Volleyball Guide Peach Belt Conference

University of South Carolina Armstrong Atlantic Spartanburg State University Peach Belt Conference

The Peach Belt Conference is in its 11th full year as an all-sports conference. In 1991, the conference held championships in men’s and women’s basketball then expanded to 11 championships in 1991-92. With the addition of women’s soccer in 2000, the PBC now sponsors championships in 12 sports, six for men and six for women. The idea for the formation of an NCAA Division II conference was discussed in November, 1988, in Greenville, SC, with 11 schools represented at the University of South meeting. Five of the colleges at that first meeting, along with two other schools, Carolina Aiken Augusta State University formed the new conference when USC Aiken hosted another meeting on December 3, 1989. The seven charter members were Armstrong State College (Armstrong Atlantic State University), Columbus College (Columbus State University), Francis Marion College (Francis Marion University), Georgia College (Georgia College and State University), Lander College (Lander University), USC Aiken, and USC Spartanburg. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January 1990 and revised to Peach Belt Conference in June 2000. Augusta College (Augusta State University) applied and was accepted in November 1990, with the effective date of membership on July 1, 1991. With the addition of Augusta College, the Peach Belt Conference had four members each in Georgia and South Carolina. Another college joined the Peach Belt Clayton College and Conference on July 1, 1992, when Pembroke State University (UNC Pembroke) University of State University officially became a member. Kennesaw State College (Kennesaw State North Florida University) became the tenth full member of the conference on July 1, 1994 and Clayton State College (Clayton College and State University) joined the league on July 1, 1995. The conference expanded to 12 members with the addition of the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Former Augusta coach and athletic director Marvin Vanover was named interim commissioner in April 1990, and served in that capacity until his appointment as the conference’s first full-time commissioner in July 1991. The conference has established an office in Augusta, GA which houses the commissioner and his staff. The conference conducts championships in 12 sports. Men’s champions Columbus State are declared in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis. University of North University Women’s champions include those in basketball, cross country, softball, tennis, Carolina Pembroke volleyball, and soccer.
