Dharmic Environmentalism: Hindu Traditions and Ecological Care by © Rebecca Cairns A Thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Memorial University, Religious Studies Memorial University of Newfoundland August, 2020 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador ABstract In the midst of environmental degradation, Religious Studies scholars have begun to assess whether or not religious traditions contain ecological resources which may initiate the restructuring of human-nature relationships. In this thesis, I explore whether it is possible to locate within Hindu religious traditions, especially lived Hindu traditions, an environmental ethic. By exploring the arguments made by scholars in the fields of Religion and Ecology, I examine both the ecological “paradoxes” seen by scholars to be inherent to Hindu ritual practice and the ways in which forms of environmental care exist or are developing within lived religion. I do the latter by examining the efforts that have been made by the Bishnoi, the Chipko Movement, Swadhyay Parivar and Bhils to conserve and protect local ecologies and sacred landscapes. ii Acknowledgements I express my gratitude to the supportive community that I found in the Department of Religious Studies. No religion, perhaps, lays as much emphasis on environmental ethics as Hinduism. The Mahabharata, Ramayana, Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Puranas and Smriti contain the earliest messages for preservation of environment and ecological balance. Nature, or Earth, has never been considered a hostile element to be conquered or dominated. In fact, man is forbidden from exploiting nature. He is taught to live in harmony with nature and recognize that divinity prevails in all elements, including plants and animals. The rishis of the past have always had a great respect for nature. Theirs was not a superstitious primitive theology. They perceived that all material manifestations are a shadow of the spiritual. The Bhagavad Gita advises us not to try to change the environment, improve it, or wrestle with it. If it seems hostile at times tolerate it. Ecology is an inherent part of a spiritual world view in Hinduism. According to Swami B. V. Tripurari, in his book, Ancient Wisdom for Modern Ignorance, " Our present environmental crisis is in essence a spiritual crisis. We need only to look back to medieval Europe and the psychic revolution that vaulted Christianity to victory over paganism to find the spirit of the environmental crisis. Inhibitions to the exploitation of nature vanished as the Church took the "spirits" out of the trees, mountains, and seas. Christianity's ghost-busting theology made it possible for man to exploit nature in a mood of indifference to the feelings of natural objects.

World Religions and Ecology series, Cassell in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF UK): • Hinduism and Ecology: seeds of Truth (Ranchor Prime); • Buddhism and Ecology (M. Batchelor and K. Brown, ed.); • Judaism and Ecology (Aubrey Rose ed.); • Islam and Ecology (F. Khalid with J. O'Brien, ed.); and • Christianity and Ecology (E. Breuilly and M. Palmer, ed.) These are very welcome titles from WWF UK's expanding range of environmental materials with a focus on religious education. In general the books highlight both doctrine and action, providing a future agenda for further development. There are no books with Sikh or Bahá’í perspectives. Ranchor Prime (Hinduism and Ecology) is a Hindu from Leeds, WWF UK's Religious Network Officer who is running a tree planting project in Vrindavan, India - a pilgrimage town devoted to Krishna. His book is a well-written mix of teaching, myth, current actions, needs and exhortation. His story is one of environmental impoverishment in India, a process in which imperial powers have played no small part. Hinduism has ecological concerns at its heart: yet Prime is concerned not only that the west learns from this, but that Hindus themselves take ecology more seriously: "Despite their deeply ecological tradition, most Hindus are surprisingly unconcerned about their surroundings to an extent which often shocks the outsider" (p.22). An important section analyses Ghandi's vision of village economics - focusing on individual responsibility and non- violence as a way of life: "We are all partners in the destruction of nature, because we all agree to benefit from its spoils" (p.61).

‘The Golden Milkmaid’: a novel and ‘Writing from the Gaudiya Tradition’: exegesis Vaishnavi Heath The University of Adelaide School of Humanities Discipline of English & Creative Writing October 2013 Volume Two ‘Writing from the Gaudiya Tradition’: exegesis Exegesis Writing from the Gaudiya Tradition Vaishnavi Heath School of Humanities Discipline of English & Creative Writing October 2013 Preamble My novel, ‘The Golden Milkmaid’, presents the literary tradition, lore and culture of the Gaudiya Vaishnavs. I lived immersed in Gaudiya culture for some decades and so have chosen to contextualize my thesis in the Gaudiya tradition. Several years living in the holy place which is the setting for the novel and a dozen trips there over two decades, meant gathering a trove of books, artwork, notebooks, journals, photographs, letters, recordings and memories. Affection for the Gaudiya faith and a wish to see it represented afresh for the general reader has brought this work about. The work is presented to counterbalance clichés or irreverence to do with the superficial spiritual- search-in-India; it reflects the sentiment conveyed in Gaudiya literature and the rich aesthetic culture of the Gaudiyas encompassing their love for a personal deity. That this project might contribute to knowledge has been a creative impetus, but greater still has been the hope that it might contribute to human understanding. My work represents the Gaudiya other-world as ‘real’ to believers. It re-tells and re-presents the Kishori-Krishna narratives, not as quaint and charming myths, but as sacrosanct and as the very sustenance and sanctuary of believers’ lives. The term ‘Vaishnav’ denotes worshippers of deities associated with Shree Vishnu including Shree Krishna.
