Did we reach our goal?” We did great on the Student Investment Drive, but we did fall short of our goal. We earned 73% of what we needed to fully budget the items requested for the students and teachers. We appreciate all the families that donated and again congratulate those that won the raffle items!

Now we are tasked with making up the additional 27% to cover the budgeted items for the MAMS PTO. We will continue to promote local businesses through Family Dinner Nights and recognition of sponsors on our Facebook page. Our next Family Dinner Night will be held on Tuesday, November 15th at The Greene Turtle in Mt. Airy.

We will also offer items from local market places such as “Unwined” candle products starting in November. Come see samples at our November 1st meeting and visit: http://unwinedcandles.com/.

Our Schwan’s promotion is a great opportunity for holiday meal items. From now until December 1st we will earn 20-40% on every purchase. To make a purchase, to support our campaign: Visit www.schwans-cares.com and Enter our school campaign ID#29628 in the white search box.

December 21 School counseling continues to evolve. Here at MAMS we keep up with South Carroll Visit (8th grade) those changes and are happy to report that we are a full-service center. The overall goal is to build capacity in students so they are college & career- ready. We address behaviors by providing learning strategies, self- Resources: management skills and social skills. Career & Technology Center Information on programs Some Thoughts on Transitions & Resilience being offered see: The middle school transition can be difficult for kids and for www.carrollk12.org/ctc parents. Parents may feel that their child has become someone they don’t recognize anymore. It’s important to take time to remember how our own adolescence was and then to extend the extra grace and humor to children that we needed. Adolescence comes with its frustrations, being highly transitional, yet it is a critical time for children to get a better sense of who they are, who they want to be. When you feel them push away or push against you, this is an opportunity of transition for parents as well. It’s when you need to find the balance between still being there for them and letting go a little. As they figure out who they are, parents are also figuring out what kind of parent their child needs. Allowing your child to experience consequences and see them struggle can be most difficult to do as a parent; however, doing so helps to build resilience in your child - a much desired quality which they will need in years to come. It’s good to step back and think about how our efforts to help can actually hurt our kids, if we are in effect enabling unhealthy behaviors (doing for them what they can do for themselves). How can you help build resilience in your child this week? Internet Security and Cyber Safety Wednesday, November 9, 6:30 pm Century High School auditorium Mr. Vince DeVivo, Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office

Should parents be worried about internet safety? Cyberbullying, sexual solicitation, privacy issues and the loss of personally identifying information have become growing concerns for schools, communities and law enforcement. A widening intergenerational gap - the difference between what parents believe about the internet and what students actually experience - makes it critical that parents remain vigilant and well-educated about size and scope of threats facing today’s cell phone-obsessed youth.

As many as 72% of youth have experienced cyberbullying. As many as 1 in 5 children have experienced unwanted sexual solicitations online. Only 39% of children felt their parents provided adequate internet monitoring. Over 25% of young people pretend that they are older than they are when online. Teens send an average of 3,000 messages per month. 97% of teens play online games on their computers, smartphones, and portable and console games. Some of these games are in an online open environment, where predators look for victims.

Mr. DeVivo will share his extensive experience and knowledge of cybercrime, discuss current online threats impacting our students and he will share strategies to ensure that parents and their children continue to communicate openly and productively about internet safety.

Due to the sensitive nature of the topics to be discussed, THIS IS AN ADULT-ONLY PROGRAM. No school-aged children, please.

PTO MEETINGS

Here are the dates for the PTO meetings for the rest of the school year. We are holding them in the evening this year, to accommodate more parents. Please come & join us to hear the latest PTO news!

November 1—7 PM December 13—7PM January 10—7PM February 7—7PM March 14—7PM April 11—7PM May 9—7PM

Check out the Media Center

It's a good day every day in the Media Center! In conjunction with the many projects on the Computer Lab schedule, reviews of information seeking, plagiarism, and citation are being presented with an interactive program, Quizizz. These reviews have been exciting and fun, and students have shown a real understanding of these important issues. Sixth graders have been delighted to learn that, in their new middle school world, they can visit the Lab during their Flex and Activity periods to check their grades, complete projects and review math concepts with approved games.

Every student has been in the Media Center to browse the collection and check out books. We are excited to have so many enthu- siastic readers, both of fiction and nonfiction. The couches and chairs are often filled to capacity with students enjoying books and magazines, and many tables are occupied by students who wisely use free time to study quietly. New books are continuing to arrive as the school year progresses, and we are being challenged to keep up with our terrific students.

We have also been busy introducing (or reintroducing) Office 365. No more lost flash drives or unfinished projects with this cloud-based collection of apps. Office 365 can be accessed on most devices. Simply go to the Carroll County Public Schools webpage and, in the lower left column, select Student and Parent Resources, then Web Apps. Students can use Word, Power- Point, Excel and Sway, all provided by CCPS, and organize their work in OneDrive and OneNote.

The Fall Book Fair was a great success! Thanks to all our shoppers and volunteers for participating in this important fundrais- er. No matter how many times I've chaired the Book Fair, I still am excited to see how much students enjoy browsing, buying and reading.

Until the Spring issue, stay curious and keep reading.

Mrs. Lichty, Media Specialist

Art Club will meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday during Activity Time. Students who signed up for 1st Semester Art Club will begin creating projects based on their own ideas. Art Club students will have a chance to draw, paint, or sculpt artwork that we won’t have a chance to cover in class. Students will also have the option to help create decorations for teachers around the school and to enter various art contests.

The worlds of Oz and Wonderland collide in this fantastically fun romp, cleverly and carefully adapted from the works of L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll. Dorothy Gale has made her way to the end of the Yellow Brick Road, and the wonderful Wizard of Oz is just about to help her get back home to Kansas. But before she can hop into the wizard’s balloon, another whirlwind appears over the Emerald City, sweeping Dorothy, Toto, Scare- crow, Tin Man and Lion away to Wonderland. Equipped with their new assets — brains, heart and courage — Dorothy’s friends try to help her find her way home, meeting many other interesting characters along the way, including Alice, the White Rabbit, Mad Hatter, March Hare, the Cheshire Cat and many more.

Buying Local; Good for Kids and our Community!

Have you heard of the Farm to School Movement? School systems across the country are trying to partner with local farmers to buy locally grown produce. In Carroll County Public Schools, locally grown produce has been served for years and each year we try to increase the amount we purchase. The Food Service program continues to seek additional farms to participate in our quote process for locally grown items. When locally grown produce is served on our cafeteria lines we proudly display signage naming the specific Farm that the product is grown. Students will see that the tomatoes were grown in Hampstead or the Apples in Westminster. Children can then make a connection between the food they are eat- ing and the local Farmers who are harvesting that food.

Unfortunately, the produce growing season is not perfectly aligned with our school year. We do our largest local produce purchases in September and October, the traditional harvest season. We then purchase such items as tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupes, peppers, zucchini and yellow squash. Locally grown apples are available to purchase year round due to local storage facilities at the orchard. It is great that students in Carroll County have local apples ex- clusively and ongoing on their cafeteria lines. We also try to do a “buy” of local products in the spring. This is a little trickier as weather plays a large part as to whether produce will grow in time to make our June school closing. In the past we have purchased spring spinach, bib lettuce, mix greens and radishes in late May to finish out the school year.

Carroll County Public schools also tries to purchase locally produced products such as milk, bread and pastries. Presently, our milk comes from a Frederick Dairy that purchases milk from dairy farmers locally, our bread comes from a Bakery in Baltimore City and we buy baked goods from Smithburg, MD. Our major food distributor is located right here in Carroll County. By purchasing locally grown and produced products we help employ folks here in Carroll County and in the state of Maryland further stimulating the economy.
