INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Mrs. Sailor: Sweet- 2 heart of CHS Seasonal Depression FBLA Week 2 By: Jessica Brinkman Fill in the Blank 2 Walking down CHS halls in January a Peach 3 gloomy aura is present. The culprit? Miss 3 Seasonal Depression. It happens every year after Christmas Vacation. Digital Photography 3 Students arrive back at school to the Meet The Seniors 4 glum realization that winter has only began. What to do? Well, the Student HON Tournament 4 Council had the perfect antidote; Winter Carnival Week. The week was Online Program in 5 Progress filled with dress up days, student activities, and plenty of sports. The Reader Reviews 5 week started Monday January 30; the Forensics 5 theme of the day was summer day, students dressed up in skirts, shorts, CHS fans support our Lady Dawgs by dressing up with capris, and flip-flops. The initial spirit for our Purple and White Day. From left to right: assembly started at 9 o’clock with Trent Pierce, Kory Mickelson, Conor Unbehuan, Brad Bowers, and Bryan Bowers. games such as pin the carrot on the snowman, lick and stick, and ball in the basket. As expected, the dominating seniors took first in all the events. That evening there was a home boys’ basketball games vs. Clear Lake; Chetek won. Tuesday was Newspaper Staff: pajama, hat, scarf, and mitten day. Tuesday evening events were both away; the girls’ Jessica Brinkman basketball team won against Spooner, and the wrestling team won against Barron. Cortney White Wednesday was day. Thursday was “singled out” day. Couples wore red, singles Megan Bachman wore green and, if one was unsure, they wore yellow. The afternoon activities brought Megan Howard comic relief to the depressed students; the annual King Cold competition took place. Cailey McClurken Senior males-under the direction of Cortney White and Kasee Hamilton- performed a Promise Lohse dance for the student body. To win, the crowd cheered for whom they liked best. Derek Chaas Toborg Berg was crowned Mr. Congeniality (voted by fellow participants); Adam Gustafson Rachel Swangim Fastest Learner; Trent Nelson Most Improved and Second Runner Up; First Runner Up; Abbie Davis James Moon, King Cold was none other than Travis Pierce (graciously accepting through

his fake tears.) Other hopefuls included Jordan Wendlandt, Jim Jones, Erik Zarnik, Kevin Advisor: Nieman, Karl Damroth, and Aaron Taft. After the much-anticipated ceremony, the day Mrs. Austin continued with games. Seniors won the bat spin but fell to the juniors in the eating contest (seniors came in second.) Thursday evening brought sadness; the boys’ basketball team lost to Spooner and the hockey team lost to Altoona. Friday closed our in school activities; the poms performed followed by the pin guard tournament. Seniors regained their dignity by winning the tournament followed by juniors, then sophomores, and last but not least the freshmen. Friday’s game was a home game, the girls’ basketball team narrowly lost to Bloomer. To finish the week the wrestling Heart of the North tournament took place Saturday at Spooner; our very own CPF team took first place. With the ending of such a whirlwind week there is sweet relief from gloomy winter for everyone in the School District of Chetek. PAGE 2 Mrs. Sailor: Sweetheart of CHS By: Megan Howard “Gladly would [she] learn, and gladly teach,” by Geoffrey Chaucer, is a favorite quote of Mrs. Margaret Sailor. Mrs. Sailor has been a beloved teacher by students here at Chetek since she began as a substitute in 1977. She started teaching full time in Chetek in 1980. Prior to working at CHS, she taught in the Minneapolis Public Schools and substituted in area schools. As a child, Mrs. Sailor lived “on a farm in the Crookston, Minnesota area, near Euclid, Minnesota.” She and her husband Dennis have two sons, Pat and Jim, who are both in their 30s. Mrs. Sailor enjoys reading, crossword puzzles, and watching sports. She likes almost any kind of music except for heavy metal since it “literally gives [her] a headache.” Her favorite flower is the tulip because it is “symbolic of the new life in the spring.” When asked if there was any place in the world that she has always wanted to visit, she replied by saying, “In the past few years I have satisfied some of my curiosity by visiting England and Ireland with two different groups. When my son married in Thailand, I visited Taiwan and Thailand. I would still like to visit Germany, Italy, and other ‘mainland’ spots in Europe. The Great Wall of China is also on my ‘someday’ list.” Considering that Valentines Day is upon us, Mrs. Sailor informed us that she first met her husband of 40 years when he “cut in” while she was dancing with someone else at her friend’s wedding dance. Forensics By:Rachel Swangim With the start of the New Year come winter sports and activities including Forensics. This is a “sport” for words, expression, and acting; it consists of solo acting, moments in history speech, four-minute speech, prose, poetry, and play-acting. This year Mrs. Hoepner has returned as the head advisor/coach and expects an exciting season. There are 19 students participating, and grades 9-11 are represented. With only freshmen, sophomores, and juniors on the team, Mrs. Hoepner says, “We have a very young team with a lot of first-time performers.” Another great thing for the team is the fact that there are more group performances this year. These groups and other performers presented their selections to the judges for the first time on February 6th at a forensics festival involving students from Cameron, New Auburn, and Chetek. Each performance is judged according to their specific category rules. The Forensics Team has started out on the right foot, and by the looks of things so far, they have a promising journey ahead. Upcoming meets include sub district at Rice Lake on February 20, district in Eau Claire on March 14, and state in Madison on April 6.
