Preface In this list cadet, associated, and stem families are arranged in a single entry when substantial property passed between one and the other providing continuity of parliamentary representation (even, as was the case in a few instances, when no blood or marriage relationship existed). Subsidiary/cadet families are usually grouped under the oldest, richest, or most influential stem family. Female MPs are counted with their birth families, or, if not born into a parliamentary family, with their husband’s family. -

The Journal of the Hakluyt Society November 2019 HMS Beagle 1831–36 and Charles Darwin. The role of Phillip Parker King and his colleague the hydrographer Francis Beaufort Brian Abbott The traditional view has been that Captain FitzRoy, as the commander of HMS Beagle on her famous second voyage (1831–36), initiated and was instrumental in securing a gentleman companion who would be a ‘well-educated and scientific person’ to sail as an invited guest.1 On this view, it was Captain FitzRoy who could claim the accolades for Darwin’s embarkation on the Beagle. The significance has been compounded with the steadily increasing interest in Charles Darwin, his work and the famous voyage in the Beagle, which in Darwin’s words was ‘by far the most important event of my life and has determined the whole of my career’.2 This article proposes that, whilst Captain FitzRoy was involved in the process, other persons played the pivotal role in Charles Darwin embarking on that famous voyage. Captain FitzRoy may or may not have initiated the search for a suitable scientific gentleman, but in all probability did not. FitzRoy, as the master and commander of the Beagle, would have been required to make an offer to, and give his approval of Darwin as a suitable candidate, but it will be argued that he was not instrumental in Charles Darwin being identified as a possible candidate, and did not influence his acceptance or give any of the necessary assurances enabling acceptance of the invitation. Sir Francis Beaufort and Captain Phillip Parker King were the persons critically involved in the events that led to Darwin’s acceptance. -

The 1805 Club Rededicates Tombs at Kensalgreen Cemetery of Two
The 1805 Club rededicates tombs at Kensal Green Cemetery of two Georgian Naval officers who served under the command of Admiral Lord Nelson at two of his most important battles The newly conserved tombs of two illustrious Royal Naval officers, Admirals Sir Thomas Capel and Sir Robert Otway will be rededicated by The 1805 Club at Kensal Green Cemetery in north London on Saturday July 10. The 1805 Club, under its new President, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band GCB, the former First Sea Lord, is the only charitable body in existence which conserves monuments and memorials to Nelson and other Georgian Naval seafarers. The Club will hold special ceremonies to mark the completion of work on the tombs of Sir Thomas Capel and Sir Robert Otway, which will be attended by Club members and guests including the Mayor and Mayoress of Kensington. Conducting the ceremonies will be The Club's Chaplain, the Rev Peter Wadsworth. Conservation work on the tomb of Sir Thomas Capel has been undertaken as part of The 1805 Club's Trafalgar Captains Project which was its major contribution during the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 2005. For this project, all the tombs of the captains who served with Nelson at the Battle were researched, then photographed and recorded in a book The Trafalgar Captains, which was published that year. Capel was the commanding officer of the frigate, HMS Phoebe at the Battle of Trafalgar and had previously served under Nelson on board HMS Vanguard at the Battle of the Nile. Part of the project also entailed identifying those tombs which required additional conservation work and Capel's was one of seven which were most at risk. -
