It explores visual representations of animal thematic postage stamps that has so far been issued in North Borneo, Sarawak, British Malaya and Malaysia. Since animal thematic stamps were introduced in the colonial era and persisted into the postcolonial era, this research aims to record and analyse the change of visual representations in both main subject matter (animals) and periphery of the subjects (decorative art and languages). It demonstrates how decorative elements evolved across eras as well as how the animals being represented in official disseminations, which consequently reflect that the ways of seeing animals are culturally or socio-politically specific. More than hundreds of animal thematic stamps that has so far been issued in Malaysia, included different definitives, commemorative stamps or special issues have been examined ranged from years 1867 to 1991. In order to get a bigger picture on the visual changes, the researcher looked and compared the animal stamps between different nations, as well as studied the different thematic stamps issued within the nation. Besides that, all animal thematic stamps of Malaysia that issued before 1992 are rearranged in differentUniversity categories to understand the selection of tendency Malaya of subject matters. Following that, this research is conducted in 2 phases. First phase is the data collection / background studies via digitalised databases as well as museum, archive centre and library visits. Second is the theoretical analysis and visual methodologies. University of Malaya iv SETEM POS BERTEMA HAIWAN: NARATIF NEGERI DARI KOLONIAL KE PASCAKOLONIAL ABSTRAK Kajian penyelidikan ini menunjukkan setem pos adalah sebahagian daripada budaya visual yang dipergunakan untuk memudahkan naratif Negeri (State). Kajian ini turut meneroka penyampaian visual setem pos yang bertemakan haiwan di Borneo Utara, Sarawak, British Malaya serta Malaysia. Sedangkan setem bertema haiwan diperkenalkan semenjak era kolonial dan berterusan ke era pascakolonial, maka kajian penyelidikan ini bertujuan untuk merekod dan menganalisis perubahan penyampaian visual di antara subjek utama (haiwan) dan subjek sampingan (seni hiasan dan bahasa). Ia menunjukkan bagaimana unsur-unsur hiasan berubah secara berperingkat sepanjang zaman serta pelbagai cara penyampaian haiwan dalam produk rasmi, yang bakal mencerminkan cara- cara kita menterjemah haiwan adalah khususnya di bawah pengaruhan, budaya atau sosio- politik. Lebih daripada ratusan setem bertemakan haiwan yang pernah dikeluarkan di Malaysia dari tahun 1867 hingga 1991, termasuk pelbagai jenis setem yang merangkumi setem definitif, setem peringatan atau isu khas telah dikaji. Penyelidik meneliti dan membandingkan setem haiwan antara negeri yang berbeza, serta mengkaji setem yang berlainan tema dalam negara untuk mendapatkan gambaran yang lebih besar mengenai perubahanUniversity visual secara umun. Selain itu,of setem Malaya bertemakan haiwan yang pernah dikeluarkan di Malaysia dikumpul dan disusun semula kategori yang berbeza untuk mengkaji faktor pemilihan. Sehubungan itu, kajian ini dijalankan dalam 2 fasa. Frasa pertama adalah pengumpulan data / kajian latar belakang melalui data digital atas talian serta lawatan muzium, pusat arkib dan perpustakaan. Fasa kedua ialah analisis teoritis dan metodologi visual. v Penyelidikan ini mencerminkan visi kerajaan-kerajaan Persekutuan yang didukung dalam era yang berbeza serta mendedahkan bagaimana budaya visual menyumbang kepada pembentukan identiti kolonial ataupun identity kebangsaan. Diversity of butterfly communities of a tropical rain forest of Bu Gia Map National Park in South Vietnam was studied in four different habitat types (the natural forest, the disturbed forest, the bamboo forest, and the stream sides in the forest) in December 2008 and April 2009. A total of 112 species with 1703 individuals of Papilionoidae (except Lycaenidae) were recorded. The proportion of rare species tends to decrease from the natural forest to the stream sides, while the proportion of common species tends to increase from the natural forest to the stream sides. The stream sides have the greatest individual number, while the disturbed forest contains the greatest species number. The bamboo forest has the least species and individual numbers.

Thirty-three butterfly species were collected in July 1993 from Sebesi and Sebuku Islands, Indonesia. Most of them were identified at the subspecies level, except several lycaenids. Fourteen species (42.4%) out of the 33 have never been recorded from the Krakataus. This proportion is distinctly higher than 4 to 8 (13.3 to 26.7%) of 30 species recorded from Sebesi in 1989. When these data were taken together, the percentage becomes 32.7 to 40.4% (17 to 21 of 52 species recorded from Sebesi-Sebuku). Comparison between Javanese and Sumatran subspecies in the rate of commonspecies on Sebesi-Sebuku and the Krakataus indicates that the butterfly fauna of the Krakataus have been chiefly derived from Java rather than from Sumatra even though the 2 stepping-stone islands exist between the Krakataus and Sumatra.

And its existence become a habitat for various types of insects. The diversity of insects is influenced by several factors, one of them is the habitat where the insect are located. The Tundung Musuh area is one of the places for preserving mangrove forests in Tasikmadu as a habitat for several types of insects and existence of insect diversity in this area has not been widely studied. The aim of this research was do identify the diversity of insects in the Tundung Musuh Conservation Area at Tasikmadu Palang Tuban and used descriptive approach, with observation as the main data collection technique. The data showed that there were seven types of insect diversity, such as : Oncopeltus fasciatus family Lygaedae, Coccinella transversalis family Coccinellidae, Apis cerana family Apidae, Valanga nigricornis family Acrididae, Apias nero family Pierididae, Sanurus indecora family Flatidae, and Plantala flavescens family Libelludidae. Based on the data analysis, it can be seen that the value of insect diversity was 1.66 which means medium, the uniformity value was 0.31, which means low and the dominance value was 0.3332 which means low. Based on this, it can be concluded that Tundung Musuh isquit stable, which means that the Conservation Area is quite stable, which means that there is no striking dominance of certain species and is good enough for the growth of Insects.

This research aimed to determine the diversity of butterfly species at Kondang Merak beach. This research was conducted in April 2013. The butterfly was captured using insect nett with standart walk method. This research found the total of 40 butterflies species belong to 5 families, i.e. Pieridae (15 species), Nymphalidae (14 species), Papilionidae (5 spesies), Lycaenidae (5 spesies) and Hesperidae (1 species). Ideopsis juventa from family of Nymphalidae is the most abundant species in this area. Further research is necessary in order to provide more complete database about the diversity of butterfly at Kondang Merak beach. University of Applied Sciences Leiden, Leiden, The Netherlands Summary Taxonomic experts classify millions of specimens, but this is very time-consuming and therefore expensive. Image analysis is a way to automate identification and was previously done at Naturalis Biodiversity Center for slipper orchids (Cypripedioideae) by the program ‘OrchID’. This program operated by extracting a pre-defined number of features from images, and these features were used to train artificial neural networks (ANN) to classify out-of- sample images. This program was extended to work for a collection of Javanese butterflies, donated to Naturalis by the Van Groenendael-Krijger Foundation. Originally, for the orchids, an image was divided into a pre-defined number of horizontal and vertical bins and the mean blue-green-red values of each bin were calculated (BGR method) to obtain image features. In the extended implementation, characteristic image features were extracted using the SURF algorithm implemented in OpenCV and clustered with the BagOfWords method (SURF-BOW method). In addition, a combination of BGR- and SURF-BOW was implemented to extract both types of features in a single dataset (BGR-SURF method).

Butterfly surveys were conducted during the 2014 Biodiversity Inventory Programme in two sampling occasions: 7th–13th May and 13th–19th August. The objective of this survey is to document the butterfly (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) species diversity for future management and conservation. A total of 289 butterflies were collected, 125 species from five families were identified from both sampling occasions. Nymphalidae (48%) is the most diverse family, followed by Lycaenidae (23%), Pieridae (15%), Papilionidae (12%) and Riodinidae (2%). Among the 125 species recorded, 57 species were recorded in May, 39 species in August and 29 species in both sampling occasions. More species of The reported families Namphalidae covered 33%, Papilionidae 10%, and Pieridae 57% biodiversity of butterflies of Kohat.The reported families Namphalidae covered 33%, Papilionidae 10%, and Pieridae 57% biodiversity of butterflies of Kohat.Lycaenidae, Pieridae and Papilionidae were recorded in May compared to August. Conversely, Nymphalidae species recorded in August was nearly double the number of species recorded in May. The availability of host and nectar plants might be one of the factors that affect the butterfly diversity. The present list of butterfly is not exhaustive, therefore prolonged surveys using various sampling methods are recommended to update the butterfly checklist of Tasek Bera Ramsar Site.

DNA barcoding is a technique used for rapid identification of butterfly species at a molecular level based on the analysis of standardized mitochondrial DNA region. A 648 base-pair of cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) is highly effective in identifying vertebrate and invertebrate species. Individuals of the same species will generally have very similar COI base sequence. COI is used as a DNA barcode reference due to maternal inheritance, compact structure, lack of genetic recombination and relatively fast evolutionary rate. Therefore, it is widely used in phylogenetic and evolution studies. The DNA barcode of identified butterfly species was submitted to Barcode of Life Data System (BOLD). Thirteen species belonging to Pieridae family from Entopia Penang Butterfly Farm were chosen for this study.

Abstract Butterflies were sampled in Cadaclan, San Fernando La Union Botanical Garden (LUBG) of North Luzon to provide information on species-level diversity trend and distribution of butterflies on the open and close canopy portion of the dipterocarp forest from 2012-2014 using field transect method Species accumulation curve shows that additional sampling is needed for the possible turnover of species. Butterfly abundance was higher in open canopy forest with a mean individual of 8.14 per 10 meters out of the 814 total individuals. The close canopy forest had only 4.57 mean individuals for the total of 457. Species level diversity was higher in open canopy forest (H’ = 1.957) compared with the closed canopy forest (H’ = 1.933). These results suggest that butterflies prefer open canopy forest or clearing for their plights. Butterfly spatial distribution was uneven in the dipterocarp forest of LUBG with only 6 species of aggregate assemblages and 98 species with random distribution.
