Third generation, My grandmother (1880) and grandfather(1870) came from Frenstat p R. This is on my fathers sided of the family, My Mothers grandmother(1880)came from Ostrava and her grandfather came from Ticha Moravia. In 1880 2. I think the Czech people that I know are more concerned about the economic condition in America. 4. Do you have any family in Czech Republic who you are in contact with? Many good friends that live in Moravia, in fact we have to good friends that live in Brno, one is an English Teacher and the other is just a widow friend. 5. Do you occasionally visit Czech Republic? We started to visit the C.R. in 1996 and have been there every other year since the first visit. We love the country and plan to visit every two years until we get to old. 6. Yes, my wife who is not Czech and I belong to the Czech Heritage Society of Texas and we do volunteer work for the organization. We have a Genealogy Library in Houston which we work at every week. 8. I belong to the KJT Katolicka Jednota Texsaka (Catholic Union of Texas) this is a faternal organization started in 1892 to help widows that lost their husbands. It provides insurance for the widows and their children if something should happen to the man of the House. 9. Do you attend some cultural activities organised by Czech organisations or Czech cultural center? Navštěvujetekulturníakceorganizovanékrajanskými spolky neboČeskýmkulturním centrem? The Czech Heritage Society of Texas sponsors many cultural events throughout the year in Texas, We attend as many as possible. This year we are going to Yukon, Oklahoma for a Czech Festival(slavnost)Our Czech festivals are very different to the ones in CR, but they to bring much enjoyment to the Czech people in Texas. 10. Do you speak Czech? Do you use Czech with your family? Máteaktivníčeštinu?Používátečeštinudoma? I have 3 children, 1 girl, 2 boys. Neither one speaks Czech. I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters and they also do not speak Czech. I have been able to relearn my Czech, but it is very limited. When I started school in 1946 I could speak only Czech, but I went to Catholic School and the nunns taught us English and Czech Both. My grandmothers both could only speak Czech, one died in 1951 and the other died in 1974. I was able to talk to them in Czech but after they died I stopped using the Czech language and lost my Czech tongue. Some of the language is now comming back. 11. Do you still celebrtate some of the Czech holidays? (e.g. Mikuláš, dušičky), Does Christmas mean Ježíšek or Santa Claus for you? Most of Christmas is now celebrated as Religious holiday, we do have Svaty Mikulas at some of our Czech parties. Santa Claus has been for the children and they know very little about Jesisek and Svaty Milulas.These are wonderful memories of childhood but my children are now grown and the grandchildren are getting older so I am afraid this will all be lost one day. 12. What Czech traditions or customs do you keep? Do you cook Czech cuisine? Jakéčeskétradiceazvykydodržujete?Vařítenějakáčeskájídla? My wife and I still make sausage(klobasa) jetrnice, kolaches, we also sauerkraut the way my mothe use to. I learned to make gulas (veprovy) and also beef gulas. We try to keep all these receipes alive in our hearts and stomach. 13. Is it important for you to keep Czech traditions and customs in your family? Je proVásdůležité zachovatčeské zvykyveVašírodině? My mother and father were not to much on keeping traditions and so as we grew older we moved to other parts of Texas and only visited on special occations throughout the year. 14. Is there any purely Czech aspect you would like to sustain in your family? Jenějakýryzečeskýaspekt,kterýbystechtěl/chtělaveVašírodině zachovat? My oldest son is very interested in keeping alive the many thing I did when my father was alive. We made homemade wine, sauerkraut, canned cucumbers, made sausage, smoked meat, etc... 15. Do you feel at least partially Czech? Why? Cítíte sealespoňčástečněČech/Češka?Proč? I will always be 100% Czech and very proud. I am a Valach mi sme jedna rodina. I am Moravian, and Silecian and very proud of it. 16. What is your current relation towards Czech Republic? Jaký jeVáš současnývztahkČeskérepublice ? Czech Republic is the country where my ancestors were born and for whatever reason came to America for a better life. I admire their courage for taking such a long journey to an unknown land and suffered so much to give us a good life. I will alway consider CR as the home of my roots. I think it is a very beautiful country and the people are all so kind to us. In most of the small towns especially the common people are the ones I love the most. Most villages are kept very clean and the gardens are always so pretty with all the flowers. 17. Are you proud of a success of Czechs in the USA? JstehrdínaúspěchČechůvUSA? We have many Czech in America that are very successful. There are many in public life and serve the country. However it is the Czech working people that worked hard in those early days that we must show respect for. They made our lives so much easier.
