As a graduate of the University of Sheffield you have every reason to be proud. You are joining a long tradition of excellence stretching back more than 100 years. The University of Sheffield was founded with the amalgamation of the School of Medicine, Sheffield Technical School and Firth College. In 1905, we received a Royal Charter and Firth Court was officially opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. At that time, there were 363 students reading for degrees in arts, pure science, medicine and applied science. By the time of our centenary, there were over 25,000 students from more than 100 countries, across 70 academic departments. The first ever graduate of the University was its first Chancellor, the 15th Duke of Norfolk, who was awarded an Honorary Degree in 1908 prior to the first ever graduation ceremony. This graduation ceremony took place in the historic setting of Firth Hall on 2 July 1908 at 5 pm - three years after the University had been opened by King Edward VII. At this inaugural ceremony, 81 graduates were present, 10 of whom were female. There were also 4 honorary graduates. The first female student to cross the stage was Winifred Parker with the first male student being William Watson. The first international student to graduate on this day was Zung Tse Kien Woo from China. The Sheffield Gene Therapy Innovation and Manufacturing Centre (GTIMC) will be one of three cutting-edge hubs in the UK dedicated to advancing the clinical development of new genetic treatments for a number of diseases that currently have no cures. • Research from our Medical School has helped to develop a new medical device that improves the prediction of preterm birth at a fraction of the cost of current methods. The device will help to reduce the global number of deaths and long-term complications caused by babies born prematurely. • Our scientists have developed a new approach to creating drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease which has identified two potential new therapies. The drug leads are able to target the three pillars that cause Alzheimer’s and improve on previous approaches to developing new treatments for the debilitating disease. • Our historians and scientists have collaborated to revive and grow extinct varieties of rice as part of a project to revive recipes and flavours that were once loved but have since been lost. The project is developing rice that can thrive in an increasingly extreme modern climate. • A new, more sustainable way to make zinc oxide - a key ingredient in many high end health and beauty products such as sunscreens - has been developed by our chemical engineers. The method is being commercialised to create sunscreens that are much better for the environment and don’t damage fragile corals and marine ecosystems. 6 The University of Sheffield Your Graduation: Summer 2021 • Our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) are supporting a major new project to decarbonise the industrial cluster around the Humber and help UK manufacturers win work in emerging low-carbon sectors including hydrogen fuels and carbon capture. Recognised • The University has been ranked among the top 100 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2022, reaffirming our position as a leading global university for teaching and research excellence. • The University is in the top 10 per cent of universities in England for working with businesses to find solutions to problems in industry and society, according to a new framework. The first-ever Knowledge Exchange Framework, published by Research England, shows the rich contributions that universities such as Sheffield make, both economically and socially, on local and national levels. Honoured • Dr Thushan de Silva from our Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease has been awarded an MBE for his Covid-19 research. Dr de Silva and his team have made a major contribution to the global effort to track virus mutations and characterise immunity to SARS-CoV-2. • Professor Julie Gray from the University’s Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology has been elected as a member of European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). The EMBO is an international organisation that promotes excellence in the life sciences around the world. Professor Gray’s research is helping to tackle global food security risks. • Professor Tim O’Farrell from our Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering has been selected to join the new Climate & Environmental Working Group. The group will feed into government policy on the environmental impact of 5G technology. Invested • The University has launched a £3 million Covid-19 Support Fund for any of our students who are facing additional costs or a significant reduction in income because of the Covid-19 pandemic. • We’ve pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions on campus by 2030 and across all of our activities by 2038.

    Biography Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned DJ and five-time-Grammy-Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning artist and producer. Ronson spent the first eight years of his life growing up in London, England. Having played guitar and drums from an early age, it wasn't until moving to New York City following his parents’ divorce, that he discovered DJ culture. At age 16, and already a fan of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, Ronson began listening to mixtapes released by various hip hop DJs. Inspired, Ronson confiscated his step-father's vinyl collection and tried his hand at mixing. It was the first step in a career highlighted by work on a multi Grammy-winning album by Amy Winehouse, as well as his own Grammy-winning, global smash hit with Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk." In the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. Ronson quickly earned himself a reputation through stints on the decks in downtown clubs before becoming the DJ of choice for many noteworthy parties. Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs hired Ronson to DJ his fabled 29th birthday bash. These and other high-profile gigs boosted Ronson's profile and connected him with other artists, many of whom were interested in collaborating. His first production gig came from British soul singer Nikka Costa and he found that his experience of working a club crowd informed his production skills. Fusing his eclectic turntable skills with his knowledge of musical instruments and songwriting, Ronson soon embarked on his first solo record.

    25 years of Eastenders – but who is the best loved character? Submitted by: 10 Yetis PR and Marketing Wednesday, 17 February 2010 More than 2,300 members of the public were asked to vote for the Eastenders character they’d most like to share a takeaway with – with Alfie Moon, played by actor Shane Ritchie, topping the list of most loved characters. Janine Butcher is the most hated character from the last 25 years, with three quarters of the public admitting they disliked her. Friday marks the 25th anniversary of popular British soap Eastenders, with a half hour live special episode. To commemorate the occasion, the UK’s leading takeaway website www.Just-Eat.co.uk (http://www.just-eat.co.uk) asked 2,310 members of the public to list the character they’d most like to ‘have a takeaway with’, in the style of the age old ‘who would you invite to a dinner party’ question. When asked the multi-answer question, “Which Eastenders characters from the last 25 years would you most like to share a takeaway meal with?’, Shane Richie’s Alfie Moon, who first appeared in 2002 topped the poll with 42% of votes. The study was entirely hypothetical, and as such included characters which may no longer be alive. The research objectives were as follows: •To explore the frequency of alcohol use on British soaps aired on non-satellite UK television •To investigate the positive and negative portrayal of alcohol •To explore the percentage of interactions that involve alcohol •To explore the percentage of each episode that involves alcohol •To assess how many characters drink over daily guidelines •To explore the relationship between alcohol and the characters who regularly/excessively consume alcohol •To look further into the link between the location of alcohol consumption and the consequences depicted •To identify and analyse the repercussions, if any, of excessive alcohol consumption shown •To explore the frequency of tea use on British soaps aired on non-satellite UK television •Six weeks of footage was collected for each programme from 26th July to 6th September 2010 and analysed for verbal and visual instances of alcohol and tea. •In total 21.5 hours was collected and analysed for Emmerdale, 15.5 hours for Coronation Street, 15.5 hours for Hollyoaks and 13 hours for Eastenders. © 2010 Kantar Media 3 INTRODUCTION cont. •A coding sheet was formulated in conjunction with Drinkaware before the footage was analysed which enabled us to track different types of beverages and their size (e.g.
