Présente-nous la genèse du projet Dernière Volonté, du tout début jusqu’à la première sortie, à savoir “ Obéir et mourir ” en double cassette chez La Nouvelle Alliance il y a maintenant huit ans ? Pour être plus précis, Dernière Volonté existe depuis 12 ans, mes débuts officieux remontent donc à 1994.C’est donc durant cette année et avec peu de moyens que j’ai enregistré une cassette (‘Résistance’ que je n’ai jamais publié) assez bruitiste sur laquelle j’avais mixé des rythmes militaires, des ‘cut-up’ et des basses synthétiques. Pendant plusieurs mois, j’ai expérimenté différents procédés d’enregistrement (ralenti, inversion, distorsion et cut-up) et comme je n’avais pas le moindre sou pour m’acheter un sampler, je faisais mes propres ‘loop’ via des bandes magnétiques coupées et collées. C’était vraiment complexe mais il y avait une vraie ‘dynamique’ dans le son, et un résultat tout à fait surprenant. Evidement les bandes s’abîmaient et se détendaient et ça transformait vraiment la tonalité de ce qui était enregistré (c’est un procédé que j’ai gardé par la suite notamment pour Obéir et Mourir).

2 ÚVODNÍK ÚVODNÍK Vitajte na našej základni „Najprv stručne z jej histórie: O chýbajúcom slovenskom SF časopise sme sa bavili s tech- nickým inžinierom Arceym niekedy v marci cez gtalk (určite to bolo ešte v čase, keď základňa Fantá- zia vyzerala, že v pohode existuje). Chceli sme niečo, čo by môj dovtedajší projekt vesmírneho telesa Istrozin posunulo na inú, profesionálnejšiu úroveň. A pridali sme, že pokojne by sa za vstup do kolónie mohlo platiť. Zohnať spolupracovníkov nebolo ťazké. Kolegovia z personálu Istrozinu sa pridali radi, Kika sa ujala stránky, plus som oslovil Juraja Maxona s prosbou o obálku a článoček – a ten rád vyhovel. Ďalší spolupracovníci sa pridávali postupne – tak napr. Martina Pilcerová pomohla s obrázkami v logu. Plus nám zahralo do nôt vydanie antológie „Farby strachu“, z ktorej máme najdlhšiu poviedku. (Viacero faktov tu pripomína vznik Fantázie nie len prebratie poviedky z práve vychádzajúcej knižky, ale aj napr. Maxonova obálka na nultom čísle). A čo si teda pri nultej návšteve môžete pozrieť? Poviedku o (relatívne) neďalekom Marse pred- stavuje Andrzej Pilipuk. Spomínaný text z antológie „Farby strachu“ je novela Alexandry Pavelkovej „Farba“. Zvyšné tri poviedky sú finálové zo súťaže „Poviedka za 33“ na tému text piesne. Verím, že vás zaujmú. Z publicistiky by som okrem rozhovoru s autorom zahraničnej poviedky upozornil ešte na re- cenziu Zrodenie planéty opíc, článok o seriáli Hra o Tróny a taktiež Rogerland, ktorý bude naďalej pokračovať práve v našej kolónií. Na záver ešte odpoveď na otázku, prečo vstup na základňu nie je platený. Bude to tak iba pri nultom čísle, aj to z dôvodu, že vydavateľ odskočil tesne pred publikovaním.

Genre and Influence: Tracing the Lineage of Timbre and Form in Steven Wilson’s Progressive Rock Ryan Blakeley Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Music degree. School of Music Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Ryan Blakeley, Ottawa, Canada, 2017 Abstract This thesis examines the music of contemporary British progressive rock artist Steven Wilson and explores the ways in which specific musical influences have informed and shaped his work. Wilson’s solo output is extremely eclectic and draws from a plethora of diverse genres including progressive rock, electronica, metal, drone, pop, jazz, and industrial. Although it would be impossible to trace all of the influences involved in Wilson’s unique musical idiolect, I study the influence of three seminal tracks upon his work: progressive rock band King Crimson’s “The Court of the Crimson King” (1969), electronica duo Boards of Canada’s “An Eagle in Your Mind” (1998), and progressive death metal group Opeth’s “Blackwater Park” (2001). I demonstrate how Wilson’s recordings share timbral and formal features with these earlier works and consider the analytic implications through the lens of genre theory. The findings are then synthesized through a focused analysis of Wilson’s “Ancestral” (2015) in order to explore genre fusion and demonstrate how these salient musical features are integrated within a single song. This project ultimately seeks to situate Wilson within the progressive rock tradition, consider the role of timbre and form in popular music genres, and investigate the complex relationship between genre and influence. ii Acknowledgements There are a number of people without whom this thesis would not have been possible, and I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to them.
