CANCER RESEARCH UK : CHRISTMAS CARDS Sutton Bonington Friends of Cancer Research UK would like to thank everyone who purchased Christmas cards in 2019. The sum of £174.17 was raised and has been sent to the charity.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM SUTTON BONINGTON PRIMARY SCHOOL! We had an eventful autumn term with many highlights. One particularly proud achievement was being chosen to produce backdrops for The Snow Dragon, a theatre production, which was shown at Lakeside over the Christmas period. The children in the Reception class up to Class 3 showed superb collaborative skills to produce some stunning artwork which successfully got all of the theatre-goers into the Christmas spirit! If you managed to visit the production, you will have (hopefully!) spotted the amazing artwork!

SUTTON BONINGTON SHOW’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 11th February at 7.30p.m. in Sutton Bonington Village Hall Library Room. All welcome.

SWAN COURT The Sutton Bonington and Normanton-on-Soar Social Services Association has a vacancy at Swan Court. The property is a one-person bungalow consisting of sitting room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. It has gas central heating and an emergency communications system. There is a warden who visits the site daily and is able to assist tenants in certain circumstances. The site has a community room for informal gatherings and all the garden and grounds are maintained by the Association. The rent is £175 per fortnight with the tenant being responsible for all utility bills.

These properties are designed for and aimed at older members of society. Potential tenants must already live in either Sutton Bonington or Normanton (or have previously lived in those villages and wish to return) or new residents who would like to live closer to relatives who do live in the villages. If you are interested or know someone who might be please contact Miles Raven (01509 672160) or Rosie Hopkinson (01509 672811). U3A’s next general meeting will be at 2.00pm on Tuesday 28th January when speaker John Todd’s subject will be The Dire State of the NHS. John's career spans forty years with the National Health Service and he'll focus on the triple pressures of rapidly rising demand, severe workforce challenges and the need to recover from the deepest funding squeeze since its inception. If you're retired you're welcome to join us. Refreshments provided. Soar Valley U3A (University of the Third Age) provides relaxed learning and leisure activities for retired people in your area. For more information, phone Membership Secretary Lorna Orton on 01332 811030 or visit our website - http://u3asites.org.uk/soar-valley

SUTTON BONINGTON BOWLS CLUB On the night of Thursday 21st November we were broken into via the gate adjacent to the tennis club and we have several thousand pounds worth of lawn mowers stolen. They caused severe damage to most of the outer sheds, checking to find where we kept the mowers, which we will now need to repair and replace where necessary. These people were very determined and went through two wooden doors with locks and bolts plus an inner iron cage similar to a gaol. I have been in touch with Security at the University who saw nothing!

The police have visited and have given us a crime number, but if anyone saw anything suspicious on the night of Thursday 21st then they should contact the officer who attended, PC Tony Davies 07702 141572. We are looking for a van or flatbed truck with a double wheel rear axle as they left tyre marks in the mud. They would have been parked outside the tennis club for around an hour. Unfortunately for us we have no CCTV and No insurance so this loss comes as a great blow to the members of the club.

The Christingle Service resulted in £242 for The Children’s Society.

SUTTON BONINGTON BAPTIST CHURCH Thanks to all the teams which took part in the Quiz Night on 16th November where £375 was raised for Syrian refugees. This will be multiplied SEVEN TIMES thanks to a scheme run by a generous donor on behalf of Christian Aid. Also, a big thank you to all village residents who supported our Rock Solid and RS Plus clubs’ Trolley Dash by generously donating items for Joseph’s Storehouse.

We have a week of prayer from 5th to 10th January. If you have anybody or anything you would like us to pray for then do contact John at www.sbbaptist.org.uk or at the church office (01509 673264). Or let Kathy Hebblethwaite have your prayer request which she will post on I Love Sutton Bonington in January. At 10.30am on Sunday 19th January there will be a Churches Together service at the Baptist Church for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity at which John Hebblethwaite will be speaking. We will be praying for each-other’s churches during our time of worship.

All are welcome whether or not you are committed to a church or would just like to find out more. It is free of charge but you are welcome to make a small donation at any or all of the sessions. 4 COMMUNITY SHOP The Normanton-on-Soar store is a small, well-stocked shop run by a group of volunteers, many of whom are not village residents but who offer their invaluable help. As well as selling a wide range of products, the community store, located behind the Village Hall, serves refreshments and is a regular stop for cycling and walking parties as well as many visitors to Normanton. Alongside this, the shop acts as a general meeting place for small groups with shared interests including a weekly Scrabble match held on Monday afternoons. Volunteers are always needed, particularly around holiday times. If you could spare an hour here and there please call 01509 646464 or pop along to the shop and have a chat and a cuppa! (Opening hours: Monday to Friday 10am - 1pm and 2pm - 5pm. Saturday 10am - 1pm.)

CHILDREN’S SOCIETY COLLECTION BOXES 2019 Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the collection boxes for the Children’s Society. The idea is to put any loose change in your ‘money box’ which is collected by a co-ordinator each year. It’s such a simple idea as every little helps. Normanton has twenty-four boxes plus one in the village shop and £342.05 was raised in 2019. Sutton has fourteen where £206.10 was raised. The total UK box network brings in over £1.5 million but there has been a recent decline in the number of box holders so they urgently need us to expand our networks where we can. So, please, if you would like a box contact Gill Hilsdon (e-mail [email protected] or 01509 842520) who is the co-ordinator in Normanton or Margaret Bishop (e-mail [email protected] or 01509 672662) who is the coordinator in Sutton Bonington They would love to hear from you. The Society was established in 1881 to address the urgent needs of vulnerable children and young people but even now, in the twenty-first century, young people in the UK still live with enormous disadvantages. The Society, supported by almost 6,000 local church communities, works directly with these children, many of whom have nowhere else to turn, to ensure they are loved, valued and listened to and to fight childhood poverty, harm and neglect. Our gifts help to change lives every day by providing the funding needed for the society to maintain their vital services. Please help if you can. Thanks!

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The Normanton on Soar WI meets on the first Tuesday of each month in Normanton Village Hall at 7:30pm. On 7th January, the speaker is Nigel Slater whose subject is Attenborough Nature Reserve. Guests are very welcome and the cost is £5 including tea/coffee. Come along and enjoy a relaxed evening and meet new friends. For more information about the WI’s activities please contact Sue James (673460).

HEARING AID CLINICS The free clinics, run by Laura Ainsworth from The Ear Foundation, continue on the second Tuesday of each month in Normanton Village Hall between 2.00pm and 3.00pm. The next ones will be on Tuesday 14th January and Tuesday 11th February.

QUIET SPACES AT ST JAMES - TAIZÉ SERVICE Please join us for a Taizé-style service, led by Sue Archbold, at the beautiful church of St. James, Normanton-on-Soar on Tuesday 28th January at 6:30pm. This is a quiet, contemplative service with lovely Taizé music, readings and prayers and all are welcome. 5 WORKSHOP FOR READERS OF LESSONS Louise Third, a Communications Consultant (https://www.louisethird.com) has offered to run a free training session for both Normanton-on-Soar and Sutton Bonington churches to encourage the way in which bible readings are delivered. As a speaker-coach and speechwriter, she works with people from all walks of life to help them get the most out of public speaking. The session runs for 2½ hours and will be held in the chancel at St James church on Sunday 26th January from 2.00pm to 4:30pm. The workshop is intended to help and encourage current readers of the lessons as well as those who may be interested in being a bible reader in the future. If you would like to attend and are a Normanton resident please tell Brian Archbold and for those in Sutton Bonington please contact John McKenzie. Everyone is welcome and the style is encouraging and informative.

NORMANTON ON SOAR MEN’S ASSOCIATION On Monday 27th January there will be the annual quiz at the King’s Head, Sutton Bonington preceded by a very short AGM. Transport will be provided from Normanton by the Soar Valley Bus and a fish ‘n chip supper will be available. We have to pre-book dinner and places need to be reserved on the bus so if you wish to join us please call John Herrington (646240) before Monday 20th January. On Monday 24th February at 8.00pm in The Plough, Normanton-on-Soar, Gareth Howell will be giving a talk about The Witch Trials of : Superstition and Science. Gareth is an accomplished speaker, having lectured widely, including radio work, and this presentation will give an interesting insight into a much-debated part of English history.

CHRISTMAS FAYRE - THANK YOU! A big ‘thank you’ to the stallholders, Normanton-on-Soar Women’s Institute and everyone else who helped at the Christmas Fayre on Sunday 24th November in Normanton-on-Soar Village Hall. It was a really good morning and we raised £530 towards the proposed disabled toilet and kitchen servery in St. James church. Thank you, also, to those who attended the event and for the help put in by all for our village. It’s very much appreciated. Sue Ponting x

CRAFT AND CHRISTMAS FAIRS –THANK YOU! Many thanks to Sue Ponting for kindly organising the Christmas Fayre which was held in Normanton-on-Soar Village Hall. It was very popular and everyone felt that it was a lovely sociable occasion. Also, thanks to Fran Dimelow for holding a craft fair in Sutton Bonington Village Hall. St James, St Michael’s and St Anne’s churches each received £120 from the overall proceeds. The money received by St James church will also go to the new servery/disabled toilet fund. 6 QUIET SPACES AT ST JAMES The regular monthly Julian Meetings at St. James church, Normanton-on-Soar, encourage each of us in the practice of contemplative prayer. Julian of Norwich's writings encourage us to be still, silent and receptive in God's presence, trusting Him to make Himself known to us. After a brief introduction our times together are based on the simple idea of spending at least half an hour in silence, waiting on God, and are open to anyone who would like to come. You can find more information on the website: www.thejulianmeetings.net or contact Sue Archbold ([email protected] or 842341) or Carolyn Brock ([email protected]) The next meeting is 25th February from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. All are welcome!

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY AT ST JAMES This year’s Remembrance Sunday, led by Rev. Mary Essex, was well-attended and donations of £68.50 each were sent to the British Legion and Combat Stress.

ST JAMES CHURCH – CHARITY OF THE YEAR Each year, St James church nominates a local charity to support and, over the last eighteen years, £12,000 has been donated to different charities. In 2019, the organisation was Shannon Trust, nominated by Patrick Cole, and a cheque for £750 was presented to Sue O’Hara (Chair of the Trustees) at the annual carol service last month. Sue explained that, for most of us, reading is a skill we take for granted But, for thousands of people in prison, reading a letter from home, a job application or a newspaper is impossible. The Shannon Trust Reading Plan changes this, giving adults in prison the chance to learn to read one-to-one with a peer mentor. The scheme operates in local prisons at Whatton, Lowdham Grange and Nottingham. Nominations for Charity of the Year 2020 are now invited and will be discussed at a meeting of the Parochial Church Council. If you have any nominations, they can be given to Janet Bonser, Peter Tyers or Brian Archbold.

ST JAMES CHURCH – COTTON BAGS AND TEA TOWELS Some cotton bags and tea towels have been made, using a new church logo designed by Simon Barrington. These items could make ideal Christmas presents! They are available at the back of the church – the cotton bags are £5 each and the tea towels £3 each.

ANY UNWANTED TOOLS and EQUIPMENT IN YOUR GARAGE? If so, please contact Tools For Self-Reliance (TFSR) who could put them to very good use. This organisation works with experienced local organisations across Africa to give local artisans the tools they need to help overcome poverty. TFSR volunteer groups throughout the UK collect and refurbish tools these artisans need. If you can help in any way with this effort, please contact John Green for - 01636 816766 – or Dave Woods for – 0116 271 7407. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Middle age is when you’re not inclined to exercise anything but caution (Arthur Murray)

SEASONS by Dennis W. Turner

The darker nights are drawing in, as winter threatens to begin With dismal days and heavy skies, it closes in as autumn dies. A wind is blowing from the hills to bring the first of winter chills; A howling northerly prevails and naked trees bend to the gales.

The cold, short days and frosty nights are backdrops for the Christmas lights That strive to bring a little cheer to this, the darkest time of year. And still the winds of winter blow to bring the January snow To craft, as by some unseen hand, a pristine winter wonderland.

The great expanse of dazzling white transforming landscapes overnight. A scene where ponds and puddles freeze and icicles adorn the trees. Out on the hillside children play but winter isn’t here to stay. Before the winter days are done come signs that springtime has begun.
