SUNDAY TEAS The Sunday Teas season is almost halfway through now and the teas continue to be successful with locals and visitors from further afield. Every Sunday a different local group or charity hosts the teas and all provide an enticing selection of sandwiches and home baked cakes and pies for sale and to take away. Many groups have sales tables and a tombola to raise extra money for their organisation. Do come along and enjoy the wonderful homemade produce served in a friendly atmosphere and support local groups. Our last Sunday Teas this season is 7th October.

Howard stirred many memories of news events and celebrities he photographed over 40 years. Thank you Howard and Janet for arranging these two events.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION I said at the Photography Talk that the CA hopes to reinstate the High Legh Photographic Competition. The CA has found that, in general, events work best when we can partner with other organisations, who bring their specialist interests and expertise to the event. We have been discussing with local Photographic Societies to explore if they can work with us on the 2018 High Legh Photographic Competition. Discussions continue as it is proving hard to arrange meetings over the holiday period. So I cannot yet confirm that the event will go ahead. However... We have provisionally booked the Village Hall for viewing the High Legh Photographic Competition entries on Sunday 14th October. Confirmation about Event details will be announced though www.highlegh.org.uk and What’s On. The deadline for entries is expected to be Sunday 7th October.

The provisional 2018 High Legh Photographic Competition Classes are:

1. High Legh and Cheshire 2. Nature 3. People and Places 4. Open Under 15s only 5. My best photo

The competition will be open to all. People aged under 15 on Sunday October 14th can take part in all classes. So, let’s use this wonderful summer sunshine to capture some great photos, which we can all enjoy viewing in October.

©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 7 VILLAGE HALL Pre-school have completed their move to Rosemead on Pheasant Walk, and we are planning to make some changes to the Village Hall starting with internal painting. The painting of the main hall and side hall will begin on Wednesday 1 August. Every attempt will be made to keep disruption to users to a minimum. The work is being carried out by Gary Percival and is expected to last two weeks. Gary will return to the Village Hall later in the year to gradually work through every area until the job is complete early in the new year. At the end of this month we are undertaking some roof repairs around the clock tower. While this work is going on we would ask all Village Hall users to use the West Lane entrance door and not the kitchen door. This is purely for your safety and the safety of our contractors. You will notice as you approach the Village Hall that, once again, the Hall is festooned with magnificent hanging baskets. Thanks go to Stewart Jackson of Primrose Nurseries for his generosity. The baskets together with the WI maintained rockery will continue to draw in customers for our famous Sunday Teas and give continued pleasure to all Hall users. Now that the Pre-school have moved to their new premises it gives us an opportunity to organise the furniture making use of the West Lane store, the side hall and the annexe as well as reviewing our requirements for the future. The Hall continues to be a magnet for parties and we have perfected our skill at getting balloons off the ceiling which is no mean feat as its 6 metres high.

Should you wish to hire the Village Hall for a party, social or business event please contact Helen Wright at [email protected]. Special rates are available for High Legh residents and charities.

We are pleased to announce that High Legh preschool is now open at Rosemead! Over the Whit holidays we moved our equipment from the Village hall and into the bungalow. We have had a fantastic month settling in and enjoying the fantastic outdoor space we now have. At Rosemead we have created a dining room and messy play area where we have enjoyed baking and creating each week. We have a quiet room where the children can sleep after lunch or where we can spend time concentrating on activities, reading stories or doing jigsaws. The main room leads onto the beautiful gardens and we have made the most of the weather exploring the outdoor space which includes an area for planting in our raised beds and plenty of space to run around and ride in the cars and scooters. We have discovered that High Legh is full of very generous people not only with their kind donations, but with their time. We have had so many helpers to get the preschool open and we are most grateful to those who filled in paperwork, created plans for parking and fences, filled their cars with equipment, brought their tools to build, paint, drill, plant, cut hedges and mow and to those who helped to clean and remove all the rubbish! It really has been a community project. All this would not have been possible without the help of all those at the Village hall. We took over the side room and space was made to house our equipment. We never expected to be there so long and I’m sure Preschool wouldn’t have recovered if we had closed until Rosemead opened. Thank you Helen and Mike and to all the other users for accommodating our requests to help keep the children safe. We will miss the big hall and the fantastic kitchen. We’re looking forward now to welcoming new children as our big ones (pictured above) go off to school. It’s sad this time of year to say goodbye to the children who we have often known since they were babies but it is fantastic to have watched them grow into such independent little people. We hope you have a great time at big school and come back to see us when you can. This year we will also wave goodbye to Sue Corden our Preschool Deputy. Sue has worked at preschool for 12 years and we will miss her support, advice and endless energy. We wish her a very happy retirement. We welcome Ellis Starkey who becomes our new Deputy and Lindsey Cuthbertson who becomes our Nursery Teacher. We are now open from 8am - 6pm all year round. We accept children from the age of 2 and we are eligible for 2 year old funding. We are eligible for the ‘free’ hours and have limited 30 hours funding and term time places available. We are still open over the summer so if you would like your child to attend our holiday club, we still have a few places for children up to the age of 8. We are already busy for September so please get in touch if you are interested in a place now or in the future. It is never too early to put your child’s name down. Please email Yvonne or Ellis at [email protected] or ring 01925 756061. A wonderful summer at High Legh Primary School

This year we celebrated 50 years of our school being on Wrenshot Lane since it moved from the Village Hall in 1968. For our big celebration each class dressed up as a different decade – we had quite a few Mary Quant dresses, fluorescent Ra-ra skirts and crimped hair. The Pop Project played live music across the decades, and we were taught dances such as the Twist and The Locomotion and sang along to the Beatles and the Kinks. Graham Skelland, lead singer of the band, was one of our ex-Head teachers. It was lovely when he came back in the evening and met up with other teachers. We had set up old photographs and videos of our school through the 50 years. It was amazing to have 3 generations of a family finding themselves in different pictures. We had a lovely lady who came to have a look around the school as she taught here in the 1970’s. We even managed to find a class photograph of her from 1972. Thank you to all the past students, staff and teachers who came to visit. It really was a wonderful community event. We celebrated the royal wedding earlier this year by dressing up in red, white and blue and enjoying a picnic lunch outside in the sunshine. Mrs Topping and her staff spoilt us with Harry Ramsden’s fish and chips followed by cake and ice cream. Children are naturally curious, so as well as exciting science topics during the year we dedicated a week to science. We had daily investigations and a competition for which class could make the most bubbles. Children made a variety of bubble wands, and we even made a mixture so strong that we made huge bubbles which children stood inside. The week culminated in a whole school trip to Catalyst the science museum. Our brass band continues to play at a very high level and this year we were chosen to play at The Cheshire Show. The children were pitch perfect and played several songs which cheered up the crowd who were listening in the rain. Thank you to parents and High Legh residents who came to support us. Our staff strive to uphold our vision of wanting children to have fun, a childhood and learn through investigation; they make our school very special. A huge thank you goes to all our volunteers and staff. Sadly, we say goodbye to our amazing Year 6 children – a cohort who have leave our school as responsible, caring, funny and conscientious. You have truly been a delight and we will miss you very much.

Next year we look forward to a new curriculum which adds more exciting opportunities for children, we are also trying to raise funds to change our outside area (playground and woods) as much of this is very dated. If you would like to visit our school or would like to offer your support by working with our children please ring 01925 753713.

Rebecca has been involved in our school PTA for a few years now (particularly organising the Apple Picks). We also welcome Emma Roberts who has agreed to take on the new role of New Events Ideas Coordinator. We think Emma will great at helping to identify new events each year to help drive a rotation of events that supports keeping the Events calendar fresh. If you have an idea for a new event, please get in touch! The 2017-18 school year has just ended and the High Legh PTA have had a busy year! 18 events have been organised with the two main purposes of fundraising and encouraging a sense of community. There have been many volunteers... 7 PTA Class Reps, 12 event leaders, 24 helpers at the Christmas Fair, 49 volunteer signups for helping at the HL 10k (which raised valuable funds for the school despite the fact that the race sadly had to be cancelled this year), and 83 volunteer signups for the April Sunday Tea (which made a record high profit!) All this support is hugely appreciated and it shows what is possible when everyone pulls together! Watching our children enjoy themselves at the many events and sharing in a sense of community is brilliant. Since September 2017 we have raised over £7k through events and the generosity of some families’ regular donations. The fundraising has enabled each school child to receive a Christmas Panto snack bag, a Christmas book gift, an Easter Egg, a school trip subsidy, a Sports Day ice lolly, a School 50th Anniversary Bookmark and Coaster, wet play games, new library books, and, for Year 5 and 6, Brass Band tuition. Oh, and last but not least…a Leaver’s Treat for all Year 6. We have also managed to save funds in order to make a contribution to a big school project starting later this year... refurbishment of the school playground. More news on this in the Autumn! We have more events lined up for this year. Planning is now in full flow for theSummer Fair on Friday 13th July, 3.30-5.30pm. There’ll be a steam train, a tractor, a visiting fire engine, football speed shot game, bouncy castles, badge making, coconut shy, crockery smash stall, plants for sale, refreshments (Mrs Toppings proper sausages in rolls) and stalls galore! We send a very warm welcome to the whole community... please bring a friend along. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of High Legh Primary on the current site, the PTA are organising a special Masquerade Ball at the Courthouse in Knutsford on Saturday 13th October 2018. Tickets are £40 (including reception drinks, a 3-course meal, dancing and lots more fun). We’d love to welcome past students, parents, teachers and governors to the event. Tables seat 10 people. If you fancy attending with some friends, tickets can now be purchased at the School Office.

They will be trained up on the use of the observatory and the telescopes. With the long summer evenings it is not, at the moment, really dark enough to observe until well after 10pm. However Venus is now a lovely evening sight in the west shortly after sunset and Jupiter is bright in the south too. Through the telescope you can see the 4 major moons change places each night as they orbit the giant planet. One of our newest members using his own camera and, with a little training on the telescope, took superb images of the first quarter moon, stitching them together to make a great composite image. And this was on his first visit to the observatory too. The observatory is open during Abbey Leys Farmers markets on the first Sunday of the month and this has attracted a lot of visitors. If sunny we have our special solar telescope looking at the Sun and also a projected image. People are surprised how quickly the image moves as the Earth rotates! In April Bernard Humphreys gave a talk on the new Chinese FAST radio telescope. At 500 metres diameter it is the largest in the world. In May we welcomed Ian Morison whose talk was “It’s about time” It was a fascinating account of how time has been measured through the ages right up to the present day. June’s talk was by our Chairman, Mark Holmes, whose entertaining topic was “Dragons, werewolves and other lunatic ideas”. He covered the multiple ways the moon influences the earth from tides to marine biology and how our understanding of the moon has developed. Looking ahead, on 12th July Dr Dirk Froebrich from the University of Kent will be talking about a citizen science project called the HOYS project. After our August summer break we have John Timmins on 13th September on the subject of telescopes and, later in the year, Philip James will give us “An introduction to astro-biology”. As always, the observatory is open on Friday nights from 8pm or dusk, whichever is later and also at other times via our text alert system. On Friday 27th July, it the sky is clear at dusk, we may just catch the last part of a lunar eclipse. We’ll keep you posted.

©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 17 PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS St John’s Church One of the privileges of being in ministry has been the opportunity to preside at the marriages of many wonderful couples. It is also a great joy to celebrate a couple reaching a ‘significant’ anniversary, knowing that the vows and promises they made many years earlier have sustained their relationship through all the ups and downs of married life. This year as many people must now be aware, we are celebrating the significant anniversary, not of a couple but of a building. St John’s Church, in its latest form, has been at the heart of the community of High Legh for 125 years. As with any significant anniversary, we are planning a celebration by holding of that most traditional of British institutions, a Flower Festival. The theme will be ‘St John’s and High Legh, Now and Then’, and looking at the timeline listed in the Festival booklet there will be a wealth of opportunities for individuals and organisations to place displays in the church that reflect the church as it is now, and changes that have taken place in the parish. Knowing the floral expertise of the community I know that everyone who visits over the weekend will be impressed. In conjunction with the Flower Festival, St John’s will be having a Gift Weekend. The cost of supporting the mission of the church and maintaining the fabric of the building is usually met by the congregation through regular giving and funds raised through community events such as the recent ‘Beer, Bangers and Barbeque’ on the occasion of the Royal Wedding.

Last year, however, an inspection revealed that areas of the external timbers that are such a feature of St John’s have deteriorated badly due to 125 years of braving the elements. Major repairs must be undertaken promptly or matters will inevitably get worse, and due to the skilled nature of the work involved and the need for scaffolding it will be expensive. The congregation will, as always, contribute generously of their time and money. However, considering that of the four churches in the United Benefice, St John’s, with its modern parish room and excellent facilities, is the most used during the week for a whole range of activities, we have decided to give the community the opportunity of making a contribution towards restoring what is a community asset. We want everyone in the village to continue to have the church available for regular services as well as weddings, baptisms and funerals as it has for the past 125 years. Please think carefully about this and how you might be able to help. Any donations, large or small, will be greatly appreciated.

Every blessing Philip

Page 18 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 ©High Legh Community Association 2018 | Registered Charity No 511391 Page 19 Annual Meeting - HLPC Annual Meeting was held on 21 May. There were no changes to councillors and Cllr William Hind will continue as Chairman for this year. If you would like a copy of the Chairman’s Report for 2017/18 please contact the Clerk. The PC met with Esther McVey MP recently at the Village Hall and had valuable time discussing local issues.

Road Safety - Most people who live on the estates in High Legh recognise that our roads are narrow and often lined with parked cars and they drive accordingly. There are always risks at any time of the day but especially early in the morning and mid- afternoon around the Primary School and the new Pre- School Nursery on Pheasant Walk. Please take extra care in these areas. Please keep any hedges you are responsible for under control and well off the pavements. A Vehicle Activated Speed Reminder has been installed on West Lane in the 40mph zone and the portable speed indicator device has been repaired and continues to be positioned on West Lane near the exit of The Avenue by our volunteers. We are hopeful that the “gateway” features on the A50 will be installed in August and we are working with Highways on traffic calming initiatives around the Village Hall and a pedestrian crossing on the A50. Broadband speeds - The Council have had a meeting with Voneus (a Wireless Internet Service Provider that uses advanced radio technology to deliver Superfast broadband services to customers in rural communities around the country). They have been working with Little Bollington, Millington and Dunham Massey. They do this by offering a “Fixed Wireless Access” solution to the premises and promise to deliver speeds no lower than 30mbs. This is a significant improvement on those speeds we have seen in the rural areas which are lower than 2mbs. The results are now being analysed and the results will be published this summer on www. hlnp.org. They will then be used, together with the results of the first survey in 2016 to prepare a draft Neighbourhood Plan on which residents will be further consulted. Options presented were: Cllr. APRIL - BAKING BREAD, THE GBBO & ME Award winning baker Mitch Poole gave a talk on the art of bread making and his experiences after applying to be a contestant on the Great British Bake Off in 2016, along with 3,000 other hopefuls. After jumping through all the necessary hoops and having answered many personal questions, Mitch was summoned to London to meet the producers. The train journey from Warrington to London was not an easy one encumbered as he was with several cakes. Seeing his dilemma, the friendly guard stepped in and Mitch completed his journey in 1st class style. Now one of the chosen few, he was given mysterious instructions to meet other successful applicants in the “Pineapple Inn”. At this point, he reflected on the implications of being a contestant, mainly the pressure, particularly from the press and he decided to withdraw from the contest. Mitch also holds bread making workshops. Members were so impressed with his skills that they asked if he could help with Sunday teas; sadly he declined. JUNE - THE STORIES BEHIND OUR FAVOURITE NURSERY RHYMES Jean Finney, singer; songwriter; TV extra & cruise ship entertainer came to High Legh in June to talk about nursery rhymes. How sweet could that be? Not at all! Jean took us back in time to tell us the stories behind our most loved nursery rhymes and what gruesome tales she told. (But we are not to tell the children). Apparently, “Goosey; Goosey; Gander” refers to religious persecution and priest holes in Oliver Cromwell’s time. “Three blind mice and Mary, Mary, quite contrary” relates to the brutality carried out during Queen Mary reign and even “Oranges & Lemons” has unpleasant origins. But perhaps there is a clue at the end of that little rhyme. Jean provided a very entertaining evening. It was good that she had time to visit before embarking on a world cruise to teach the ukulele to cruise ship passengers. RESOLUTIONS EVENING This took place in May. High Legh Members voted unanimously to accept the 2018 resolution on Mental Health. “The NFWI urges all members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health and to lobby government for better support for mental illness”. The National Federation discussed the resolution at the AGM in Cardiff on June 6th. It was voted through by 5,900 votes. THEATRE VISITS Members who visited the Brindley Theatre to see “You’ve got a friend” said it was superb. The production of “The Queen of the Desert” at the Garrick Theatre was described as brilliant. CRAFT GROUP - The supply of toiletries to a local women’s refuge, organised by the craft group, will continue. A thank you card expressing their appreciation was read out. The craft group has also asked members to knit cannula sleeves for patients. Involvement in the Cheshire Show will be the last activity before breaking for the summer. The next get together will be in September. WALKING GROUP - The walkers plan to walk by the River Weaver and lunch at the Penny Black.

HIGH LEGH BOWLING CLUB Bowling Club Instore The major thoughts in a bowlers mind in early Spring are likely to be weather related, as the green reopens and the outdoor season starts in April. The 2018 season got off to a promising start with relatively fine weather and a green that had responded well to the maintenance and treatment carried out over the close season. The weather has a tremendous impact on the game of bowls having a direct effect on the “speed” of the green. Damp conditions with wet grass will clearly make it more difficult to propel a bowl across the green. As the ground dries out the green becomes faster and we see more bowls ending up in the gutter around the edge of the green. Some greens have the reputation of being inherently “fast” with little effort being needed to send the bowl a long distance, Judging the speed of the green and the changes in speed are probably the biggest tests of a bowler’s skill. Bowlers generally know their home green well and can adjust to the conditions. Bowling on greens in away matches, however, can be very difficult and a player needs to quickly assess the green to make a competitive start to a match.

Outdoor Bowling We are at about “mid-term” in our league matches and I am pleased to report that most teams are doing well in their respective leagues generally occupying a mid table position. Special mention, however, must be made of one team for their progress this season. The League team under the Captaincy of Norman Harrison is currently lying third in division 2. Well done to this squad. Those of you who want to follow the progress of all teams and players can click on the appropriate link on the “teams” page in the club’s website. Statistics are updated weekly.

Club Competitions Two club competitions have already been completed, three are still in progress and there are two more at later dates. The men’s’ pairs competition, held in mid May saw some excellent bowling with games contested in a competitive but sportsmanlike fashion. The ladies pairs took place on a bright, sunny afternoon in June and it was encouraging to see more lady members taking part. The winners in these events were: Mens Pairs – David Maynard and Stuart Maun Ladies Pairs – Jean Priestner and Sue Jennings

The future? There have a been a large number of newcomers to bowling contacting the club recently following a publicity “campaign” from the club. This has resulted in approximately 20 new members joining the club so far this season. A most enjoyable event to introduce youngsters to the game was held recently, when Class 5 and Class 6 of High Legh Primary School visited the green, as part of their sports week, to have a go at crown green bowling. The pupils involved were a credit to their school and, after some initial misgivings, showed a keen interest in the techniques involved in the sport. Initial comments such as “I didn’t know there was a bowling alley in High Legh” and “..you know, that game played by old people” were soon seen to be misplaced when the children got to grips with bowling balls. Our President, Jack Stant, was pleased to receive thank you letters from Class 6 pupils.

New members are welcome to contact Jack Stant on 07831 121735 or email [email protected]

High Legh Robert Moffat Memorial 10k Race Following the cancellation of the race this year because of the weather, partial refunds were offered to all entrants. They were given the opportunity of either receiving the refund or donating the monies to High Legh Community Association, High Legh Primary School and Lymm Runners. As a result of the generosity of the runners most chose not to seek a refund and as a result over £1600 was given to each of the three organisations. We are very grateful for all those who gave and will be offering all entrants to this year’s race early entrant status for next year’s race.
