Terry Bertling, features editor SA Express-News & editor of Trends Magazine, wrote an article about the Runway show, with photos, which appeared in the May 12th edition of the San Antonio Express-News’ SA Life Section. In an email to Maria Davis, Terry said “I really enjoyed the show & soaking in all the creative vibes from the talented FASA members. We'll have a page of photos in our June issue of Trends magazine….”. (Check H.E.B., CVS etc. for free copies the last weekend in May.) “I'm also loving the jacket ("Rain Forest" by Robin Early) and scarves I bought at the show. I get lots of compliments when I wear them. “ "

FASA’s Project for the Conference…..Table Decorations of fiber coral

FASA has committed to providing the table decorations for the Federation Conference in February 2012. We’ll be making fantasy sea creatures in various fiber techniques. The inspiration for the project is the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef project ( http://crochetcoralreef.org ). The project focuses attention on the desperate plight of the world’s coral reefs. A significant exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Sant Ocean Hall showcased some spectacular work (http://crochetcoralreef.org/ exhibitions/smithsonian.php ).

Our project, of course, will be much smaller in scale. We don’t know yet how many tables we’ll need to decorate, but a good estimate is that we’ll need at least 100 corals. Here’s the challenge: Make a coral-like shape in any fiber technique you want to use. You could also make something like a sea sponge or a mollusk. If you know how to crochet, you can find some easy instructions at http://crochetcoralreef.org/Content/makeyourown/IFF-CrochetReef-HowToHandout.pdf. Use yarns of any weight. We’re looking for corals that are at least four inches in any one dimension, but no larger than 12 inches tall (we want to be able to see over the centerpieces!).

If you prefer using some other medium, go for it! It would be great to feature all different types of fiber and fiber techniques in this project. During the fall, we’ll show samples of corals to help inspire you. FASA’s goal is to bring together at least 100 corals at the January 2012 meeting, where we’ll put them into groups for display on the tables at the Conference.

Please let Allison know ([email protected]) if you plan to participate in this fun project. For inspiration, see all the corals at http://www.seasky.org/reeflife/sea2.html or http://www.coral-reef-info.com/coral-reef-animals.html.
