Day 2 The city of Hyderabad was constructed in 1591 by King Hyderabad Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, which ruled this region of the Deccan plateau from 1507 to 1687. During this time, the Sultanate faced numerous incursions by the Mughals and the Hindu Marathas. In 1724, the Mughal governor of the Deccan arrived to govern the city. His official title was the Nizam- ul-Muluk, or Administrator of the Realm. After the death of Emperor Aurangzeb, he declared his independence and established the Asaf Jahi dynasty of Nizams. The Nizams of Hyderabad were known for their tremendous wealth, which came from precious gems mined in nearby Golconda (see Day 3), the area's natural resources, a vibrant pearl trade, agricultural taxes and friendly cooperation with the British. Much of the architecture still existing in Hyderabad thus dates from the reigns of the Qutb Shahi Sultans or the Nizams. European influences were introduced by the British in the 19th and 20th centuries. At the center of old Hyderabad sits the Charminar, or "four towers," which dates to 1591 and is surrounded by a lively bazaar and numerous mosques and palaces. This morning we will enjoy a leisurely walk through the area. We will stop to admire the colorful tile mosaics found inside the Badshahi Ashurkhana. This Royal House of Mourning was built in 1595 as a congregation hall for Shia Muslims during Muharram. -

Abstract Among the hand woven sarees of India, Paithani is famous and has played a significant role in weaving together the socio-cultural fabric of Maharashtra since it is traditionally a part of the trousseau of every Maharashtra bride. The aim of the study was to document the existing weaving traditions of Paithani and explore the possibility of weaving Paithani as a yardage with different product layout. To achieve the formulated objectives a descriptive cum exploratory study was planned. Data collection was done through observation and interview schedule during field visits in Bhandge Lane, Yeola. The weavers were selected through purposive random sampling. Adaptation of Paithani saree layout on handloom was done for selected product range to unearth new opportunities for a local craft and help them expand their market. Data analysis indicated that the younger generation was involved in the traditional weaving of Paithani saree. The weavers were training their children in traditional weaving practices of Paithani; contributing positively to its sustainability. The craft details in terms of raw materials, loom set-up, dyeing, weaving process, types of Paithani, colours and motifs was documented through photographs and supplemented with text. It was reassuring to learn that 80 per cent of weavers would prefer to diversify into other products instead of just weaving saree if done using same technique of Paithani weaving. -

It is the 2nd largest manufacturer a. Cotton: and exporter in the world, after China. The share of textile and clothing Cotton is one of the most important cash crops and accounts for in India’s total exports stands at a significant 12 % (2018-19). India around 25% of the total global fibre production. In the raw material has a share of 5 % of the global trade in textiles and apparel. The consumption basket of the Indian textile industry, the proportion of uniqueness of the industry lies in its strength both in the hand-woven cotton is around 60%. The consumption of cotton is more than sector as well as in the capital intensive mill sector. The mill sector 300 lakh bales (170 kg each) per year. -

However, in recent years, while declining HIV trends are evident at the national level as well as in most of the States, some low prevalence and vulnerable States have shown rising trends, warranting focused prevention efforts in specific areas. The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) is strongly evidence-based and evidence-driven. Based on evidence from ‘Triangulation of Data’ from multiple sources and giving due weightage to vulnerability, the organizational structure of NACP has been decentralized to identified districts for priority attention. The programme has been successful in creating a robust database on HIV/AIDS through the HIV Sentinel Surveillance system, monthly programme reporting data and various research studies. -
1 Pleistocene Climatic Changes in Western India
Abstract submitted for Mini Workshop “Future of the Past” to held at Gateway Hotel, Manglore, November 21 to 26, 2011 Pleistocene Climatic Changes in Western India: A Geoarchaeological Approach S.N. Rajaguru, Sushama G. Deo and Sheila Mishra Deccan College, Pune Recently Dhavalikar in his A. Ghosh memorial lecture titled “Indian Archaeology in the 21st Century” delivered on 25th September 2011, in New Delhi, strongly emphasized the need of understanding past cultural changes in terms of palaeoenvironment. He has suggested that growth and decay of protohistoric and historic cultures in India have been largely influenced by changes in the intensity of monsoonal rainfall during the Holocene, approximately last 10,000 years. In the last 25 years considerable new scientific data have been generated for the Holocene climatic changes in India (Singhvi and Kale 2009). It is observed that the early Holocene (~ 10 ka years to 4 ka years) was significantly wetter than the late Holocene (< 4 ka years). These changes in summer rainfall of India have been mainly due to global climatic factors. In the present communication we have attempted to understand prehistoric cultural changes against the background of climatic changes of the Pleistocene, approximately covering time span from about 2 Ma years BP to about 10 ka BP. Recently Sanyal and Sinha (2010) and Singhvi et al (2011-12) have attempted reconstruction of palaeomonsoon in Indian subcontinent by using data generated through multidisciplinary studies of marine cores, continental- fluvial, fluvio- lacustral, aeolian, glacial and littoral deposits- preserved in different parts of India. However, there is no input of prehistoric cultural changes in these publications. -

How do we all build character? Well, certainly we can try and model it and we have also talked a great deal about great character traits in assemblies and tutor periods. We have focussed on resilience, integrity and gratitude. These have produced some really reflective moments. The last assembly helped us reflect on what we are grateful for, it is so easy to assume that what we have is the norm, and of course so much is not. So I am grateful to our students and staff for going that extra mile in Charity Week (marvellous moments abound but ‘Strictly’ will be forever a favourite) . I am grateful for my good health this tiring term and all the people who have supported me, and more importantly, the school. I am grateful to the teachers and support staff who step up to the plate when other staff are sick. Students who help each other and particularly help students catch up with or help understand their work. Then there is integrity or doing the right thing when no-one is watching. Please look at our ‘Good Deed Feed’, it warms the heart. There are many unsung heroes, who model what we aspire to be – good citizens, friendly, supportive, kind and life enablers.
