A Work Project presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Master’s Degree in Management from the Nova School of Business and Economics CAN A LEMON BASED SAGRES PRODUCT ATTRACT CONSUMERS THAT DON’T DRINK BEER? ANA RAQUEL MARQUES SANTOS 1607 Under the supervision of: Professor Victor Centeno JANUARY 2015 CAN A LEMON BASED SAGRES PRODUCT ATTRACT CONSUMERS THAT DON’T DRINK BEER? ABSTRACT The purpose of this project is to understand if the brand Sagres is damaging the product Sagres Radler. The beer market in Portugal was studied and focus groups were used to perceive the impact of the brand in the product. The mother brand is bringing the beer association into a product designed to engage people that don’t like beer. With the insights, a new proposal was drawn and tested. Although it was not possible to prove that the new concept is better for the population, there are strong indications that the brand isn’t enabling the achievement of the proposed target. SOCIEDADE CENTRAL DE CERVEJAS E BEBIDAS: Internationalization Strategy Options in Angola and Brazil Francisco Maria Mota Antunes Santos Garcia DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF INTERNATIONAL MSc IN BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, AT THE CATÓLICA LISBON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS JANUARY 2013 Abstract Title: Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas: Beer Internationalization Strategy Options in Angola and Brazil Author: Francisco Maria Mota Antunes Santos Garcia This case study has been prepared based on a real-life business scenario, where the company “Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas” (SCC) was chosen in order to serve as a teaching example of the complex and difficult task that companies’ have to expand their operations internationally, as well as, to alert to the opportunities and threats existing in a global business context. SCC is a Portuguese based company specialized in producing and marketing beer and other beverages, acquired in 2008 by the Heineken group, one of the largest beer companies in the world. In 2012 the entire European beer market was contracting considerably as a consequence of the global financial crisis and its negative impact on consumer’s purchasing power. In view of this critical situation, SCC managers believed that the only way the company could counteract to the poor results in Portugal was to focus their future development towards external markets. Thus, Angola and Brazil appeared to be the most meaningful internationalization options for SCC. In the former the company was urged to re- evaluate its approach to the market and augment its performance, whilst in the latter SCC was not yet present and therefore needed to develop the appropriate strategy to enter that market.

THE PEDAGOGICAL PEDAGOGICAL THE SUSTAINABILITY? ADDRESSING ARE COMPANIES HOW How are companies addressing sustainability? The Pedagogical Case Study of Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas ABSTRACT Companies are being called to action by their consumers and even by governments. Both “Sustainability” and “Corporate Social Responsibility”, however, are still very broad concepts, which makes it harder for organizations to successfully implement a business strategy that takes into account and compensates for the impact of their operations in society. This pedagogical case study is focused on Sociedade Central de Cervejas e Bebidas, one of the two leading Portuguese brewers and which is part of the Heineken Group, and how it has developed its own sustainability strategy – more, how has Heineken, as an international group, contributed to this process? Taking this into account, the case study explores strategic management tools for organizations to understand their environment and capabilities and to recognize potential barriers when setting the strategic path. Additionally, it identifies not only why are companies tackling sustainability, but also which challenges do they face when so doing.
