Mrs Bikbeck's Album
1 MRS BIRKBECK’S ALBUM: THE HAND-WRITTEN AND THE PRINTED IN EARLY NINETEENTH-CENTURY FEMININE CULTURE Patrizia Di Bello, Birkbeck On the 25th December 1826, George Birkbeck, successful doctor, busy lecturer and founder of the London Mechanics’ Institution (now Birkbeck College),1 wrote a long letter to John Britton, antiquary and lecturer on the history of architecture at the Institution. My dear Sir, In consequence of your recommendation of Mr Behnes as an artist, I gave him at some inconvenience a great number of sittings. […] In the course of his visits Mrs Birkbeck spoke of her Album, in which he undertook to induce some of his poetical friends to write and for which purpose he took the book with him […]. Subsequently Mrs Birkbeck has wanted the book, which is of some value especially as containing some contributions from her friends, and has written to him for it without effect. I have also written and received no answer, and we have sent a messenger about half a dozen times in vain, and our only hope of recovering the book rests in your kind interference, as he probably will not run the risk of losing your friendship by such obstinate conduct.2 Mrs Birkbeck recovered her album and carried on working on it into her old age. It is now a rare example of an early-nineteenth-century album to survive intact and with a well-documented provenance.3 Recently rediscovered in the archives of Birkbeck College, and now valuable especially for an unpublished manuscript poem by Mary Shelley, the album has been described as ‘a fascinating insight -

Bobbie Gentry Box Set Listening Guide Disc by Disc
BOBBIE GENTRY ‘THE GIRL FROM CHICKASAW COUNTY’ CAREER DEFINING DELUXE 8 DISC BOX SET FEATURING ALL 7 REMASTERED STUDIO ALBUMS AND 75 UNRELEASED RECORDINGS BOX SET LISTENING GUIDE DISC BY DISC Disc 1 Ode To Billie Joe Ode To Billie Joe is an original combination of blues, folk and jazz elements, which in addition to containing one of the greatest debut singles of all time with ‘Ode To Billie Joe’/‘Mississippi Delta’, also furthered Bobbie’s recollections of her homeland on songs like ‘I Saw An Angel Die’, ‘Chickasaw County Child’, ‘Papa Won’t You Let Me Go To Town With You?’ and ‘Hurry, Tuesday Child’. These recordings are now supplemented by a selection of Bobbie’s acoustic demos including previously unreleased song ‘The Seventh Son’, an alternate version of ‘Mississippi Delta’, a cancelled single of a re-recorded ‘Sunday Best’/’Show-Off’ and for the first time on cd Bobbie’s Italian language entry in the 1968 San Remo song festival ‘La Siepe’ and it’s b-side ‘La Citta' E' Grande’. Disc 2 The Delta Sweete Widely acknowledged as one of Bobbie’s best records, this multi-faceted, quasi-concept album about her Mississippi Delta roots, shows Bobbie at the peak of her powers as a singer, songwriter and interpreter. Highlights include the erotic ‘Mornin’ Glory’, eerie chamber pop masterpieces ‘Refractions’, and ‘Penduli Pendulum’, tender folk fable ‘Jessye’ Lisabeth’ the melancholy ‘Courtyard’ as well as strong covers of ‘Big Boss Man’ and a cinematic ‘Tobacco Road’. In addition we can now hear some of Bobbies demos for the album tracks, and two further self-penned originals ‘I Didn’t Know’ and ‘Morning to Midnight’ as well as her interpretation of ‘Feelin’ Good’ popularised by Nina Simone. -
For a Quarter of a Century from 1950 Chess Records
BOBBIE GENTRY THE GIRL FROM CHICKASAW COUNTY – THE COMPLETE CAPITOL MASTERS AVAILABLE SEPTEMBER 21 VIA CAPITOL/UMe CAREER-DEFINING DELUXE EIGHT-DISC BOX SET FEATURING SEVEN REMASTERED STUDIO ALBUMS AND A WEALTH OF RARITIES INCLUDES 75 UNRELEASED RECORDINGS AND NEVER BEFORE ISSUED LIVE TRACKS TAKEN FROM HER BBC TV SERIES Los Angeles – July 30, 2018 – In 1967, an enigmatic singer, songwriter and producer, named Bobbie Gentry rose out of the Mississippi delta and enchanted audiences around the world with her beautiful, captivating voice and her “Ode To Billie Joe.” An unconventional, beguiling song with simple acoustic guitar and sparse production, and notably without a discernible chorus, the song introduced Gentry and her style of storytelling that was very different to the confessional song writing of other emerging female singers. The song caused a lot of commotion as it shot to number one in America and knocked The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” off the top spot. When the album Ode To Billie Joe was released the following month, it topped the charts and was the only record to displace Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band from its 15-week reign. Over the next several years, Gentry, whose birthday was this past Friday, July 27, released seven studio albums and broke ground in numerous ways as one of the first female musicians to write, produce and even publish her own music. She also produced her elaborate stage shows via her own production company and was the first female singer songwriter to be afforded her own BBC TV series in the UK where she was wildly popular. -

The Vietnam War & Protest Music
The Vietnam War and Protest Music Overview Students begin this lesson by analyzing a famous protest song and discussing the reason for and impact of protest songs. Students will then focus on one of the most protested events in history, the Vietnam War. Students will receive a comprehensive overview of the conflict in Vietnam via power point and class discussion. As a culminating project, students will examine a Vietnam protest song and create an album cover that synthesizes the information they’ve learned about Vietnam and the song’s message. (As an alternative or additional assignment on Vietnam, see also the Consortium’s “Presidential Decisions and the Vietnam War”, available in the Database of Civic Resources.) Teacher note regarding lesson length: While this document is 47 pages in length, only pages 1-5 involve the lesson procedure. Pages 16-43 simply contain various copies of protest song lyrics. Teachers should preview the lesson electronically first and only print the handouts they intend to distribute to students.
