The attacks were the worst act of violence to hit the country in the decade since the end of a bloody civil war that killed up to 100,000 people. For many in Sri Lanka, the appar- ently coordinated attacks brought back painful memo- ries of life during the long-running conflict, when bomb blasts were a frequent occurrence. There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the government said eight people had been arrested and investigators would look into whether the attackers had “overseas links”. The government also imposed a nationwide curfew and curbed social media access to restrict “wrong information” spreading in the country of 21 million people. The powerful blasts - six in quick succession and then two more hours later - injured hundreds. At least two of them involved suicide bombers, including one who lined up at a hotel break- fast buffet before unleashing carnage. CEU eTD Collection i Abstract The USA’s sudden decision of complete military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2018 and its decision to force peace between the Taliban and Afghan government created questions, uncertainties, and fears. These fears have been particularly apparent among women, specifically among the women in Kabul and the bigger cities who have fought for and gained more space and platforms during the years since the Taliban’s regime (1996-2001). This thesis discusses these uncertainties, fears, and emotions as they happen. I aim to highlight a particularly salient aspect of this period by focusing on Afghan women’s subjectivities and leadership amid a situation of constant fear and uncertainties. To do that, I have been reflecting on my insider/outsider positionality and the possibilities and constraints it has created. As a feminist from Kabul, I have stayed in contact with organizations and individuals in Kabul, which kept me aware of women’s actions, mobilizations, dynamics during the ongoing peace process period, although I was physically away.

Aside from the changes in attitudes, the all-around focus on the necessity of peace has been revolutionary in the sense that it not only has attracted the attention of national and international bodies and media, but also lead to a nationwide grassroots activism by the Afghan citizenry. Although there are different dynamics to the perceptions about the Taliban as terrorists, enemy, and ultimately political adversaries, the 14-month process of U.S.-Taliban Peace Talks demonstrated both an evolutionary change in U.S.
