Die Invasion der Barbaren Gedanken zur Re-Mythisierung Hollywoods in den 1980er-Jahren Marcus Stiglegger, Berlin 1. Wenn ich zurückdenke an das Jahr 1982 – ich war gerade 11 Jahre alt –, muss ich sagen, dass Conan für kurze Zeit zu meinem Mentor wurde. Ich durfte den Film mit Arnold Schwar- zenegger damals noch nicht sehen und sammelte daher verzweifelt alle Artikel über John Milius’ CONAN THE BARBARIAN (1982), die ich finden konnte. So kaufte ich mein erstes Cinema-Heft und meine erste Bravo-Ausgabe, denn beide berichteten ausführlich über den archaischen Barbaren. Und welche Freude war es, als der Heyne Verlag mit seiner Veröf- fentlichung der Conan-Stories und -Romane begann, die jeweils mit einem Filmfoto auf dem Cover erschienen. Diese blassgelben Buchrücken schmücken noch heute mein Lesezimmer. Conan kam damals zur richtigen Zeit: mit der wachsenden Popularität von J. R. R. Tolkiens Herr der Ringe-Romantrilogie und dem gleichnamigen Animationsfilm von Ralph Bakshi aus dem Jahr 1979, mit John Boormans 1981 gestarteter Neuinterpretation des Arthus-Mythos’ in EXCALIBUR und Terry Gilliams TIME BANDITS (1981). Es folgten THE DRAGON SLAYER (1982) von Matthew Robbins, FIRE AND ICE (1983) von Ralph Bakshi, THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982) von Jim Hanson und Frank Oz, LEGEND (1983) von Ridley Scott und aus Deutsch- land DIE UNENDLICHE GESCHICHTE (1984) von Wolfgang Petersen. Und nicht nur das Kino feierte die Phantasie, auch das Table-Top-Rollenspiel Dungeons & Dragons hatte damals eine Hochphase. Tolkiens Mittelerde hatte sich bereits in der Hippie-Ära der frühen 1970er-Jahre großer Beliebtheit erfreut, Studierendenkreise ebenso inspiriert wie esoterische Beschäfti- gung angestoßen. Pen-and-Paper-Rollenspiele etablierten sich als Gruppenerlebnis, und schon in den 1970er-Jahren musste man von einem Revival jener Fantasy-Literatur sprechen, die eigentlich einer anderen Ära entstammte: den krisengeplagten 1930er-Jahren mit ihren ‚Weird Tales‘ und weiteren frühen Fantasy-Magazinen. -

SEVILLE IS CINEMA Seville is a city for recording films. Seville has been and continues to be the setting for many national and international television productions and series. We are very pleased to show you the tourist interest places of that have been the setting for these films, as well as information regarding them. How many times have you seen the Plaza de España in “Lawrence of Arabia” or in “Star Wars: Episode II”, and the Casa de Pilatos in “1492: Conquest of Paradise”? Come and visit these prominent landmarks in situ! The Real Alcázar The Real Alcázar is a monumental complex that date back to the Early Middle Ages, constituting the most important civil building in Seville. The surrounding walls, which can be admired from the Plaza del Triunfo, date from the early 10th century. The Patio del Yeso (Courtyard of the Plaster) belongs to the Almohad period between 1147 and 1237. Its ornamentation inspired later Nasrid architecture, but it was the Christian constructions that gave the complex its current appearance. The Gothic Palace, built during the reign of Alfonso X, has been modified due to the work carried out in the 16th century by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. The most outstanding features in its rooms are the tiled plinths, the work of Cristóbal Augusta between 1577 and 1583, the set of 18th century tapestries depicting the Conquest of Tunis and the reproduction of the Virgin de La Antigua. The Courtroom, built in the middle of the 14th century during the reign of Alfonso XI, is the first example of the Mudejar style in this area, representing a perfect combination of the Islamic and Christian styles. -

Film, Politics, and Ideology: Reflections on Hollywood Film in the Age of Reagan* Douglas Kellner (http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/faculty/kellner/) In our book Camera Politica: Politics and Ideology in Contemporary Hollywood Film (1988), Michael Ryan and I argue that Hollywood film from the 1960s to the present was closely connected with the political movements and struggles of the epoch. Our narrative maps the rise and decline of 60s radicalism; the failure of liberalism and rise of the New Right in the 1970s; and the triumph and hegemony of the Right in the 1980s. In our interpretation, many 1960s films transcoded the discourses of the anti-war, New Left student movements, as well as the feminist, black power, sexual liberationist, and countercultural movements, producing a new type of socially critical Hollywood film. Films, on this reading, transcode, that is to say, translate, representations, discourses, and myths of everyday life into specifically cinematic terms, as when Easy Rider translates and organizes the images, practices, and discourses of the 1960s counterculture into a cinematic text. Popular films intervene in the political struggles of the day, as when 1960s films advanced the agenda of the New Left and the counterculture. Films of the "New Hollywood," however, such as Bonnie and Clyde, Medium Cool, Easy Rider, etc., were contested by a resurgence of rightwing films during the same era (e.g. Dirty Harry, The French Connection, and any number of John Wayne films), leading us to conclude that Hollywood film, like U.S. society, should be seen as a contested terrain and that films can be interpreted as a struggle of representation over how to construct a social world and everyday life. -

Carl Brown One culture's image of another may well be best revealed not in explicit dialogue or dispute between representatives of the two, not in the learned disquisitions of scholars, but in the less self-conscious expres- sion of a culture's own self-image. The cinema can be especially revealing in this regard. Commercial fiction film was born in the market place and has always been a pervasive art form. Occasional later efforts to give the medium rarefied chic (e.g., eminent film critics, exclusive film clubs and sporadic college courses on fiction film as an art form) have in no way reined in the power of movies to penetrate all levels of society. Movies are, moreover, a multi-art medium combining music, drama and visual art. Movies, thus, can evoke the dress, speech, architecture, natural environment and even the physiognomy of another people and their culture. -

The Evolving American Presidency Series Series Foreword: The American Presidency touches virtually every aspect of American and world politics. And the presidency has become, for better or worse, the vital center of the American and global political systems. The Framers of the American government would be dismayed at such a result. As invented at the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787, the Presidency was to have been a part of a government with shared and overlapping powers, embedded within a separation-of-powers system. If there was a vital center, it was the Congress; the Presidency was to be a part, but by no means, the centerpiece of that system. Over time, the presidency has evolved and grown in power, expectations, responsi- bilities, and authority. Wars, crises, depressions, industrialization, all served to add to the power of the presidency. And as the United States grew into a world power, presidential power also grew. As the United States became the world’s leading super- power, the presidency rose in prominence and power, not only in the U.S., but on the world stage. It is the clash between the presidency as invented and the presidency as it has devel- oped that inspired this series. And it is the importance and power of the modern American presidency that makes understanding the office so vital. Like it or not, the American Presidency stands at the vortex of power both within the United States and across the globe. This Palgrave series recognizes that the Presidency is and has been an evolving institu- tion, going from the original constitutional design as a Chief Clerk, to today where the president is the center of the American political constellation. -

INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room. -

Capitalism and laissez-faire economics had led to a rising economy and a struggling working class. America looked good on the outside - gilded with ideas of freedom, equality, and opportunity - but the truth was much darker. Slums and harsh living conditions awaited most immigrants. The American government was slowly instituting a policy of harassment and destruction that eradicated the Native American population. Big political machines used the laissez-faire: holes in the democratic process to control elections - and therefore, large city and even state governments - all to line their pockets with bribes and control the population with fear.
