The number of subjects increased from 72 in 1972 to 203 in 1978. They were classified according to (1) a history of vibration-induced white finger (VWF), (2) age, (3) duration of exposure, and (4) duration of ear muff usage. The hearing level at 4000 Hz was used to indicate the noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS). The lumberjacks were exposed, at their present pace of work, to noise, Leq values 96-103 dB(A), and to the vibration of a chain saw (linear acceleration 30-70 ms-2). The chain saws of the early 1960s were more hazardous, with the average noise level of 111 dB(A) and a variation acceleration of 60-180 ms2. When classified on the basis of age, the lumberjacks with VWF had about a 10 dB greater NIPTS than subjects without VWF. NIPTS increased with the duration of exposure to chain saw noise, but with equal noise exposure the NIPTS was about 10 dB greater in lumberjacks with VWF than without VWF. With the same duration of ear protection the lumberjacks with VWF consistently had about a 10 dB greater NIPTS than those without VWF. -

The lonely Negro worker piling up dirt on the levees, plowing in the cotton fields, at work in the lonely mist of the riverbottoms; the convict leaning on his hoe; the worker walking home across the fields in the purple evening- heve poured their feelings into songs like these. The songs are addressed to the sun and the choking dust, to the stubborn mules, to the faithless woman of the night before, to the herd-driving captain ; and they concern the essential loneliness of man on the earth. Out of this singing style, which is perhaps the most primitive of all the Afro-American styles current in the United States, has developed the blues. The listener will notice the same use of falsetto stops, the same drop of the voice at the end of lines, that characterize the blues. The aingsrs generally do not refer to these work -songs as sung at all. They say they are "just hollerin'." The words are. improvised each time the songs are sung, the lines coming out of a stock of phrases and verses thet heve been sung before or else directly out of the immediate thoughts of the aingsr. Each singer generally has his own personal melody or "holler"; but these melodies are so free thet each time the song is enunciated it is a new re-creation of the singer's feelings at the moment of performance. -

Eleven of fourteen coprolite specimens showed good pollen preservation, acceptable pollen concentration, and diversity of both arboreal and herbaceous taxa, together with a number of non-pollen palynomorph types, especially fungal spores. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the coprolite collection derives from badger colonies that established setts and latrines inside the cavern over the last three centuries. The coprolite pollen record depicts a mosaic, anthropogenic landscape very similar to the present-day, comprising pine forests, Quercus-dominated formations, woodland patches with Juniperus thurifera, and a Cistaceae- dominated understorey with heliophytes and nitrophilous assemblages. Stepp plays fiddle (00:13): Stephen Winick (00:28): Welcome to the Folklife Today podcast. I'm Stephen Winick, the writer and editor in the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress. And I'm here with John Fenn, the Head of Research and Programs at the Center. John Fenn: Hello. We are excited to tell you about an initiative in which the Library of Congress is crowdsourcing transcriptions of manuscript pages. Stephen Winick: That doesn't actually sound like it has much to do with folklife, but we promise you that it does. John Fenn: Right. And that's because some of the manuscripts we're talking about are the fieldnotes and other handwritten or typewritten papers of Alan Lomax. Stephen Winick: So let's begin by setting the stage a little. Alan Lomax spent almost 70 years as a folklorist and ethnographer collecting, archiving, and analyzing folk music. His career began in 1933 when his father, John Lomax, was asked to be the new head of the Archive of American Folk Song, which had been established here at the Library of Congress in 1928. And That's the archive that now belongs to the American Folklife Center, where John and I work. John Fenn (01:24): Yes. And in this role as head of the archive, John Lomax took charge of a large repository of manuscripts and cylinder recordings. -

How I Set Up My Own Body Farm By Jennifer Dean To prepare for a new forensic science elective at Camas High School, and determined to make this new course an exciting application of biology and chemistry principles, I began by collecting forensic science resources, ordering books and enrolling in the local community college course on forensic science. I spent every extra hour soaking up as much as I could about this field during the “time off” teachers get in the summer. I was particularly fascinated by the fields of forensic entomology and anthropology. From books such as Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and Dr. Bill Bass’s work around the creation of a human body farm at the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center, I decided to create something similar for our new high school forensic science program. As we met for dinner after a day of revitalizing workshops in Seattle at an NSTA conference, I shared my thoughts about the creation of an animal body farm with my talented and dedicated colleagues. These teachers have a passion for their students and their work. I felt free to share these ideas with them and know I’d be supported in making it a reality. As the Science Department, we formally agreed to dedicate ourselves to submitting grants to make it a reality. Back at work, I sent copies of the farm proposal to my immediate supervisors, and they responded with letters of support. The next step was getting the farm started—with or without grant money—because the first class of forensic science would be starting in the fall. -
