The number of subjects increased from 72 in 1972 to 203 in 1978. They were classified according to (1) a history of vibration-induced white finger (VWF), (2) age, (3) duration of exposure, and (4) duration of ear muff usage. The hearing level at 4000 Hz was used to indicate the noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS). The lumberjacks were exposed, at their present pace of work, to noise, Leq values 96-103 dB(A), and to the vibration of a chain saw (linear acceleration 30-70 ms-2). The chain saws of the early 1960s were more hazardous, with the average noise level of 111 dB(A) and a variation acceleration of 60-180 ms2. When classified on the basis of age, the lumberjacks with VWF had about a 10 dB greater NIPTS than subjects without VWF. NIPTS increased with the duration of exposure to chain saw noise, but with equal noise exposure the NIPTS was about 10 dB greater in lumberjacks with VWF than without VWF. With the same duration of ear protection the lumberjacks with VWF consistently had about a 10 dB greater NIPTS than those without VWF. -

5 General Fitness Training 5.1 Introduction Fitness may be defined as the successful adaptation to mental and physical stress encountered in life. General Fitness Training may be defined as a scientifically-based and systematic training programme to provide the athlete with the basic means to adapt to the physical load encountered through controlled exercise. Adaptation begins by subjecting the body to a physical load through controlled exercise. Subjecting the body to a sufficient level of physical activity, to cause fatigue, provides the load on the body. After the body has had an opportunity to recover by resting, the body will adapt to this load. The adaptation will now allow the body to be subjected to the same load without becoming fatigued. 5.2 Main features of sport training Goal-oriented Training should always be aimed at achieving an increased individual performance level. Group training Although training is an individual matter, training in groups is more economical and provides the necessary emotional support for mobilising performance potential. Effective training A training programme that provides for increasing physical demands on the athlete will be more effective in developing the athlete’s fitness level. Systematic training A training programme must be orderly in method or planning. Scientific training A training programme must be based on scientific principles. Role of the coach The coach’s responsibility is to assist the athlete in all aspects and forms of training. 5.3 Main features of general fitness training Mobility The first consideration in examining general fitness training is mobility. Mobility is defined as the capacity of joints and joint chains for flexion and extension. -

Eleven of fourteen coprolite specimens showed good pollen preservation, acceptable pollen concentration, and diversity of both arboreal and herbaceous taxa, together with a number of non-pollen palynomorph types, especially fungal spores. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the coprolite collection derives from badger colonies that established setts and latrines inside the cavern over the last three centuries. The coprolite pollen record depicts a mosaic, anthropogenic landscape very similar to the present-day, comprising pine forests, Quercus-dominated formations, woodland patches with Juniperus thurifera, and a Cistaceae- dominated understorey with heliophytes and nitrophilous assemblages. Muscular strength and power development to high and low resistance loads in trained individuals 8-week intervention Gordan Divljak THE SWEDISH SCHOOL OF SPORT AND HEALTH SCIENCES Master Degree Project 47:2017 Master Program: 2015-2017 Supervisor: Niklas Psilander Examiner: Carl Askling Abstract Aim The purpose of this study was to examine high versus low resistance training loads performed to muscular failure and its effect on muscular strength, power and strength endurance. Method 11 men and 3 women (age 26,4 ± 4,4 years, weight 79,9 ± 10,7 kg, height 179,4 ± 76 cm) were recruited to train for 2 days/week for 8-weeks in the leg press and leg extension. One leg was randomly allocated to a high load (HL) program performing 3-5 reps and the other leg was allocated to the low load (LL) program, performing 20-25 reps. All sets were executed to muscular fatigue. The participants were measured for 1RM strength, strength endurance and muscular power before and after the study. Results HL and LL leg significantly improved strength gains in the LP exercise by 20,3%, respectively 21%, P < 0,001, but no difference was noted between legs P = 0,876. HL displayed significant increases in the LE exercise by 10,3%, P < 0,05, while no significant improvement occurred for the LL leg, -2,7%, P > 0,05. Strength remained insignificantly similar between protocols P > 0,05. The mean power results indicated no significant improvements within protocols, HL P = 0,309, LL P = 0,112. There was also no significant difference between the two protocols after the intervention P = 0,646. -

How I Set Up My Own Body Farm By Jennifer Dean To prepare for a new forensic science elective at Camas High School, and determined to make this new course an exciting application of biology and chemistry principles, I began by collecting forensic science resources, ordering books and enrolling in the local community college course on forensic science. I spent every extra hour soaking up as much as I could about this field during the “time off” teachers get in the summer. I was particularly fascinated by the fields of forensic entomology and anthropology. From books such as Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach and Dr. Bill Bass’s work around the creation of a human body farm at the University of Tennessee Forensic Anthropology Center, I decided to create something similar for our new high school forensic science program. As we met for dinner after a day of revitalizing workshops in Seattle at an NSTA conference, I shared my thoughts about the creation of an animal body farm with my talented and dedicated colleagues. These teachers have a passion for their students and their work. I felt free to share these ideas with them and know I’d be supported in making it a reality. As the Science Department, we formally agreed to dedicate ourselves to submitting grants to make it a reality. Back at work, I sent copies of the farm proposal to my immediate supervisors, and they responded with letters of support. The next step was getting the farm started—with or without grant money—because the first class of forensic science would be starting in the fall. -
