This exhibit, inserted within the permanent collection and architecture of the museum, overlaps contemporary artworks with the Carroll Mansion's rich history. Over time, this building has functioned as Charles Carroll's residence last living signer of the Declaration of Independence, a saloon, tenement apartments, a clothing sweatshop, vocational school, recreation center, and historic site. An amazing collection of Baltimore artists in addition to artists from Austin, New Orleans, New York, and Berlin, bring the past and present in stuttering tandem. The works range from Andrew Shenker composing the museum's collection with his own, to C. Ryan Patterson's rain barrel installation and workshop, to Monique Crabb's ceremonial revisit to objects from a loved one. The clothing sweatshop history is approached with Laure Drogoul's re-creation, PERGA's performance garment laboratory, Elke Graalfs' painted pattern, Liz Ensz's immersive pattern environment, and Andrea Bocchio's garments inspired by counterfeiting. In relation to the Declaration of Independence, autographs 1 of 2 claiming territory are explored in Stephen Current Gallery is an artist-run gallery, studio, Pauley's copies of graffiti etched into granite, and performance space, located in downtown and Hans Petrich's painting of his father’s Baltimore.
