  • 1 Tyne & Wear Archives User Guide 3 Methodist Registers
TYNE & WEAR ARCHIVES USER GUIDE 3 METHODIST REGISTERS 1. Registers before 1791 From its origins in the 1730s until the death of John Wesley in 1791 Methodism was closely connected with the Church of England. Many Methodists also attended the parish church (until their gradual exclusion) and hence were usually baptised, married, and buried by the Church of England clergy; entries, therefore appear in the parish registers, sometimes under a separate section for ‘dissenters'. A few Methodist registers survive from the later part of this period. The earliest for Tyne and Wear dates from 1787 - a register of baptisms in the Orphan House, Newcastle (MF 286). 2. 1791-1837 After the death of Wesley, Methodism soon became a separate denomination. It was governed by a Conference and organised nationally as a `Connexion' divided into Districts each made up of Circuits consisting of a number of individual churches or `societies'. During this period there were several divisions in Methodism all of which produced their own registers. The most important were: Wesleyan Methodists: the original and largest group Methodist New Connexion: formed in 1797 Primitive Methodists: originated in Staffordshire in 1807-8 and spread rapidly, especially in northern England Bible Christians: formed in Devon in 1815 and centred mainly in the south west, but there was a group of chapels in Northumberland later taken over by the Primitive Methodists Wesleyan Methodist most of these groups joined in 1857 to Association form the united Methodist Free Churches Wesleyan Reformers: (UMFC) Registers were sometimes kept for individual churches, sometimes for a group of churches or a whole circuit in the same volume.

Foreword Allotments are an important part of the everyday landscape of our local neighbourhoods and communities. Yet we frequently take them for granted and don’t give them a second thought as we walk or drive past them. It can be easily overlooked that allotments provide precious green corridors in built up areas and are valued community assets that are enjoyed by all sections of the community. We sometimes forget that they can help improve quality of life by promoting healthy food, exercise and positive mental health . There has been a recent growth of interest in allotments nationally and an increasing appreciation of their social, environmental and economic benefits.

ARCHAEOLOGY of the TWENTIETH CENTURY DEFENCE SITES of TYNE and WEAR An Illustrated Guide NEWCASTLE GATESHEAD NORTH TYNESIDE SOUTH TYNESIDE SUNDERLAND A GUIDE TO THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY DEFENCE SITES OF TYNE AND WEAR by R Whaley, J Morrison and D Heslop Newcastle City Council Tyne & Wear Specialist Conservation Team 2008 1 PREFACE By Alan Rudd Over the centuries the North of England attracted a wide variety of defensive structures to counter threats from both near neighbours and Europe. This led to the development and building of a large number of defensive structures varying from the Roman Wall to the medieval castles for which Northumberland is renowned, up to the twentieth century fortifications of pillboxes and nuclear bunkers. These structures cover a wide variety of types and design, reflecting the military engineering techniques of the time. The period covered in this book is from 1900 to 2000, the Twentieth century, a period of rapidly changing military threats and hardware. We have seen in the period the advent of the plane and the tank and the wane of the military threat from close quarters, to the development of the nuclear bomb and the long-range Cruise missile. In Tyne and Wear a large number of Military structures have been built in this period, these structures began with the redevelopment of the coastal batteries on the Tyne at the start of the century. The batteries built at both Tynemouth and South Shields were at the time “state of the art” with all new guns and emplacements. The next building period came with the onset of the First World War, when some new structures were build though little remains today.

  • Material Abstract Alan Wright Chopwell
Alan Wright Chopwell Township 1851-1911: Aspects of Residency Using A Microcosmical Approach Material Abstract This thesis presents the results of an exploration into aspects of the residency of the inhabitants of four County Durham mining villages over the period 1851-1911. These four villages - Chopwell, High Spen, Blackhall Mill and Victoria Garesfield - were all within a few kilometres of each other and housed the population of a region known, historically, as Chopwell Township. Miners in High Spen and Victoria Garesfield had been working coal from the middle of the nineteenth century but major developments at Chopwell from 1895 created a new colliery village of over 5000 inhabitants by 1911. This large in-migration created some unusual conditions for this inquiry into residency. The basic data for the analysis was obtained from the on-line versions of seven Censuses (1851-1911), supported by parish registers (1890-1911) and the 1910 Property Valuation Survey. Generally the ten-year Residential Persistence rates determined for three of the villages are comparable to other published figures, while the ten-year rates of Chopwell differ. It is suggested that the low values found for Chopwell, over the decade 1901-1911, were the result of the influx of workers which created a transient period of social ‘churning’ as the migrants adjusted to their new environment. A study of the inter-censal period, 1901-1911 for Chopwell and High Spen, revealed frequent short-distance migrations with residents moving between streets. Some of these migrations seem to occur for housing reasons, either up-sizing (for larger families) or down-sizing (for smaller families).
